You can only use one non-breaking space between characters (that is, those that also aren't spaces) whether in posts, titles, or signatures.
If your formatting exists between square brackets, then you need a space between the brackets, but also before the carriage return, because the editor window renders a string of text between the brackets as one single word. Since the text box won't cut a word off, you might have play around with spaces after the end and before a bracket.

Think of the underscore "_" as a single space.
It could also be that the italics are messing with the spacing/kerning.
