RVV Motor Works - White Knight - 10/02/10

I think you all misunderstood the "I won't be able to use GT4" idea, but it doesn't actually matter anymore, becasue my mum just offered to let me bring the cockpit over to her house, at which I'm currently living. My parents are divorced, at seperate houses, so it can be a touch difficult to keep all my stuff where I actually am. Actually, I've recently (last 20 or so times) forgotten to bring something or another every time I transfer from house to house. I rather like it. :P

So, I will be able to review the Z, whomever makes it. And, I still don't know which one I would want, actually. One one hand, there's the true successor to the lovely "Devil Z" of this garage (I regret to say, though, that I've not yet finished a full review for it. My only real complaint, though, is the car's floppy reluctance to high entry speeds.), but on the other is the totally badass and probably great drifter. It'd just be greedy to ask for both (Right?), so I've still got no idea which one I'd prefer.

But, I'll be able to say more about the Z once I drive it again. You thought that was a review, though, Vince? Oh dear, you are hungry, aren't you? Don't worry, mama's gonna give you a nice, hearty talk tomorra'.

Yum. Can I listen?

I think I'll do a Devil myself (Although Zeto / Nijuuhachi is quite a Devil Z in it's own, American way)... Try for 320km/h, good cornering, and good high-speed stability.

Damn, I had quite the host of problems today, I'm so sorry that I can't give a huge review until tomorrow. Do you have any idea how big of a problem it is when you slam your fridge door?

Not fun, and the superglue may have had a catastrophic failure by now. Fragile things, Frigidaires. I'll edit the review into this post, I know almost exactly what I want to say, but I've got no time tonight to say it, have to get in bed pronto so I can wake up on time for summerschool tommorow in much the same way that I didn't today.

Sorry, I'll try my best to review ASAP.

Grrrr, you must be kidding me! I literally have no spare time today. I woke up, went to school, got picked up by my dad to work for the majority of the day, went to dinner with the family, now it's 1 hour before bedtime and my family needs to have an extensive financial discussion and I need to shower before bedtime. I'll be in bed late as is, so I've got no time to write it today. Tomorrow, though, I only go to school (no work), so I'll definitely be able to, finally, write it up tomorrow.

Sorry for all the delays, but this specific delay is due in no way to laziness.

=Red Devil Z=
The Nissan 280Z is a classic sportscar, which means it carries a certain combination of handling characteristics: It is lighter and more 'flickable' than modern sportscars, but the '70s engineering supplies less direct and potent gripping power. The general result of this is a car that doesn't magnify a driver's mistakes, letting minor miscalulations be filtered out through indirect controls, and the lower level of grip further ensures conrollability. Of course, overpowered axe-murderers can also result from this combination, but that's irrelevant here in the realm of 2.8-litre Nissans. Thankfully, this tune doesn't corrupt any of this classic-car forgiveness in handling, but simply tweaks the balance of the cornering behaviour to a modern level of versatility.

The Racing:
Bounding up to a corner in this car and stomping the middle petal results in a moderately high, old-car amount of squatting, but the remarkable braking force is more potent than certain types of crashes. Braking through S-turns, just a hint of instability makes itself known, then hides away again as any but the most ham-fisted driver subconciously lessens the steering angle and regains composure. The forward roll under braking helps the car's responsiveness into the corner, but sacrifices nothing in terms of stability, save subtle and helpful rotation of the rear. Trail-braking into corners doesn't result in typical GT4 "Suprise: Understeer!", but more of a reassuring slight tail-in motion, all the while remaining perfectly maneuverable. Mid-corner, the lovely Nissan dances to the apex with perfect smoothness and composure, the rear somehow balancing infinite grip with an aura of slipping. Responding warmly to progressive throttle pressure, the car threads out of the corner, again the epitome of dignity and smoothness, tracing a perfect parabola through the road at speeds shocking to behold. Even when the parabola stretches just a bit too long, the characteristic soft suspension ensures that no curb, candy cane or otherwise, can upset the motion of the drive. The gear ratios feel abstractly right, letting the red needle whirl over 1000 Revs past the redline, and giving friendly, tall lower gear ratios. The apparently torquey nature of the engine accomplishes the same feat as Volkswagen's modern W12 engine, willing you smoothly forward on an invisible, unstoppable wave of torque. The top speed is perhaps slightly too high for solo time-trial runs, but the low-speed feel is perfect nonetheless, and suddenly our suprisingly friendly Red Devil gains the ability to ride on the aerodynamic coattails of cars capable of naturally higher top speeds, without the Rev-Limit Supernanny jumping in to spoil all the fun. For composed racing, this classic Nissan can run with all the pace and balance of modern cars, and none of their harshness. While a Lotus Elise or Nissan S15 could be a fistfight on wheels, the Red Devil is a warm hug and a soothing cup of tea with your favourite schoolteacher, or perhaps librarian -on a jet train.

Then, you go nuts.
You thunder up to the turn, slam the brakes, violently thrash the car from side to side, turn in, and... wonder exactly how you've leaped so gracefully sideways through the 80-mph turn in the anti-drifting game on far-too-grippy tyres, tire smoke billowing out from behind you, the tyres smoothly losing any trace of adhesion. The torque lets you maintain your speed with minimal risk of spinning the wheels too much, and the machine gracefully straightens again at the end of the bend with none of its magic lost. Your second option would be to approach the corner normally, then spank the throttle in the middle as the rear slides out "so slowly, you have time to read the instruction manual to see what you should do about it." Even at 90 mph, when the throttle stops being a force of oversteer, you can still throw the car around and straighten out, unscathed, at the far end of the smoke cloud. Our reassuring and composed racing car has just become a drifting master on the same, high-grip rubber, and with the same, no-mistake kindness, as it carries while racing.

But...
Of course, no car is without its flaw, and this car is no exception: When a driver lifts both his feet in a corner, more understeer is given him than any time he's throttled or braked. In other words, braking too late into a corner forces you to feint drift unless you'd like to inspect the outer guardrail up-close.

So, I like it then?
The Red Devil Z is an awesome car, and "awesome" is not a word I use lightly. It feels entirely authentic as a classic sportscar with its soft suspension and just-slow-enough responsiveness, but it can run with the pace and versatility of a modern sportscar, and finally it can drift better on S3 tyres than anything I've tried so far. Lift-throttle understeer aside, I have infinite difficulty finding a single flaw with this car. I recommend to anyone who sees this, to try this car immediately. It's astonishing, so it recieves a very well-deserved 98.5/100.

:yuck:

Wow, I haven't got a review like this in my lifetime. Thanks EA11R, I did my best and, well you've seen the result. :)
It's funny, when I was beginning to tune this car it was already great. Potential was to be seen and heard. (Stationairy sound > gorgeous) I ran out of time and so I resumed tuning the day after. I was ready to write down the settings but then suddenly I saw I hadn't done any tuning yet at that moment. I had not seen something like that before. I mean a car that's already great at stock, without even minor failures, that's not something you see every day!

Again, thank you very much EA11R! I absolutely loved your word choice, your passionate way of describing your experiences with my Red Devil Z. :D

Ah, the highest honour of all: a reply beginning with "..."! I'm so proud any time I get that, for whatever reason (oddness, grooviness, etc.). I'm really happy you liked it, because I'm fresh out of vocabulary. :P

So, I assume you can understand why I'd like another?

;)

Yes, I can understand that. It's just that this kind of success is hard to repeat, but I will try to equal the 'Devils'. I just need to win it and go and play with it a bit. RJ is also working on this one.

In the meantime, you could have a look through our garage. See if you can find something you like.

That's a lot of cars. Got any recommendations? My only real opinion is that some of your FF cars look interesting, but I know that FFs are always either amazing, or crap.

Actually, I think I built that Escort a while ago, and never got around to testing it...

^Also, yeah, I know you probably won't be able to top this car (It's too good), but I basically just feel like I want a 240Z a bit more... pedigreed than most. Besides, you've still definitely proven to me that you're a good tuner anyway.

RJ: I'm sorry I never really said yes or no, but I tried out your RX-7 drifter and it didn't suit my driving style at all, so I've requested a drift version of TTL. It's funny, I think I've actually adapted my drifting style to the N3-tyred driftcars of =drifting24/7=. Unless, of course, he meant that you two were collaborating on the grip version, in which case, full speed ahead!

That's fine mate.

I wasn't thinking drifter for my 240ZG, and I don't think Vince is either.

You may wind up with two different setups for it. Or one tune that combines the best of the best from the both of our testing.

:P:tup:

I didn''t even notice that correlation at all... Are you proud of your work? 💡 I'll try some out, though I won't guaruntee reviews, because I've made that mistake many times before, and I need to find somthing truly inspiring (or wretched) to write more than a smallish paragraph about.

Or one tune that combines the best of the best from the both of our testing.

That's what I was hoping for! I like. :)

EDIT: Yes! I just did The Cap, 200 Miles Enduro, in the Devil Z on S1 tyres for 200 points. I was matching pace with the Shelby (no Lotus here, so he's fastest) for the entire race, then, around lap 55, I started opening a gap by 2 seconds per sector, on my yellow tyres! Which gave me the gap to allow me to pit and swap to tyres that weren't boiling to take an ultra-comfortable 9-second winning lead, and I broke my lap record on the very last lap, number 66. I understand what you mean, about being able to become 'one' with this car. It just loves its driver, regardless of whoever is actually driving it! Thank you again for this lovely Z, Vince! It is groovy

Notes: The hippie's second choice for a vehicle, the first being the Beetle-based VW Bus. This one in particular started life as an original 1949 model, with the tiny 1100 sitting behind the rear axle. That same 1100 has been pressurized and tuned quite a bit; now producing 85hp and 137 ft-lbs of torque. It feeds power through a completely custom gearbox to a set of high-performance but still ultimately very narrow wheels and tires.

It won't get you into trouble around corners, despite being lightened significantly and quicker than a few family sedans; In fact, you could probably drive it while looking out through kaleidoscope eyes and still be in complete control... That is, unless you make the car itself hit some acid. Then it's just much, much quicker and that sorta throws the balance out of whack.

We do not condone any illegal activities, and the writer of the above has since been locked up.

Beetle!!! Herbie power! Haha. ;)

Anyway, tomorrow got a free day, which I should be learning, so I've finally found time for the new Devil Z.

Edit: Learning did take more time than expected so it will take a little longer to get the 240ZG. I hope you don't mind. :)

Edit2: I found out that the Devil Z settings work quite well on the 240ZG, so if you like you can apply them. RJ and I are working on it, so it will be done this weekend.

Shelby Mustang Review[b\]
The '65 Shelby Mustang, what a great car.Sadly a cant stay the Performance is as good as its looks. Its max speed stock is only about 130mph and its braking power and turning SUCK.Luckily I knew where to go,RVV:sly:.After the Mustang had the RVV treatment I gave it a go at Laguna Saga.It was like I was driving a different car,at the first turn I expected it to still take a while to stop but no it stops on a dime:).Also it has a good balance between accel. and speed and while turning it does not shift its weight around.I give this car a 9.5/10

Nicely done RRV:)👍

Thank you.
The car i need turned is the '64 GTO.Since its a muscle car to its stock max speed is low and needs major improvement in braking power and turning. But it needs to still be able to run on S1's.

Thanks for the help RRV

Thanks for the review, and thanks for the job.

How does this sound?

480+bhp
720+ ft-lbs torque
1292kg curb weight
S1 tires
Sub-150k pricetag
180+mph top speed

Currently trying to get it to hook up a bit better, it currently can spin the tires to 80mph or so. Not bad to drive as long as you can control that though.

Thanks Killer for the review. :)

If you're looking for more cars to review, VtiRoj has got some nice ones for you. He just joined the garage not so long ago, so his setup aren't reviewed much yet.

Edit: oh, sorry missed you mentioned doing the Mirage, which already is one of Roj's tunes. :)

Anyway:

Thanks for your effort!👍

ps. We have a stunning battle coming up and the 240ZG is on it's way too. (final stages) So keep your eye on the RVV thread for the next couple of days!

Mirage review

Ah the Mirage,it was the first car I got in GT1,hell I havent driven one since GT1.I remember it was like a Civic but a little heavier...but there was one thing I remember about the car.....THE HORRIBLE UNDERSTEER!!!:ill::ill:.But due to that one being stock I wanted to try this one.Took it to Fuji 80's and it can take that wide turn at 100mph.But as i started it turn in other turns...that horrible understeer still had a great presence.Im not saying the tune is horrible,it is mostly the car.
I'D give it a.. oh how bout 8/10? since it is mostly the car itself.

I'll review some more of Roj's tunes after im done with this 80's Civic race car im working on(fun!)

Yeah. I will admit it has a hint of understeer, although I never took it to Fuji 80's so I don't know how it behaves there. Its slightly more suited to lower speed tracks than faster ones so perhaps thats where the understeer is showing up more.

Thanks for the review though! Thats earnt you 1 setup coupon that you can redeem any time from me. :)

Then again we're open to free requests anyway. ;)

Well I just started a tuning garage last night so I am trying to tune cars myself but if I need a car tuned,I know where to go :tup:RRV owns:tup:
It whould be nice if you stop by Wright tuning garage though. My Shelby Rattlesnake still needs a victim err...reviewer

Now I really need to review one of RJ's, because 1) he's the only one who I HAVEN'T reviewed a car from, and 2) I just found out last night from looking through old threads that we share a home state. I have either the Nissan S13 or the Toyota 7 in mind, but if you have one that you would like to suggest, I'm all ears.

Keen observation, that thing is fantastic while idling!

I'd like, however, to take this moment to express my disappointment that noone's commented on the smiley at the end of my review. I was hoping that would be about 7 times as much fun as it was.
