Budget isn't nailed down yet (still waiting on insurance from the last) but yeah.

Should be 4 grand or less. I'm near Detroit.

As long as it's good to drive and preferably a manual I'm happy.

Didnt you have an rx7? If so what happened too it? Being a vw fanboy might I suggest a mkiii Gti with the vr6 engine.

Would be nice if I had a 7.

I actually have an '87 XJ6 sitting up at my dad's house but it's going to be a while before it's even worth mentioning.

What got wrecked was a 2005 Mazda 6i; most of the insurance pay is going to go to the loan and anything left is going towards a replacement.

Now then... A MkIII is tempting and I saw a VR6 Jetta earlier today on Craigslist... It'll get a good look.

Buy a Miata. Tell me how it is.

lol, One of my former co-workers says that its fun.(a miata) But as of right now he was having to drive the car in 3rd to get to work because of the clutch going out....and then 5th...and then he had to have it towed. But still fun.

Ferrari FXX.

No, wait...

Older Impreza? You might be able to sneak by with a WRX if you're getting one about as old as I am.

I wouldn't even consider borrowing a $4000 WRX. Subies hold their value.

Tempted but the cheap ones are either rotting or have issues.

Or an MX-3.

Rocking horse droppings. Moreso with the V6.

Toyota Celica, too, while we're at it...

and don't count out an F-body. ;3

Celica could be fun. I'd rather not try to insure an F-body just yet though.

Actually it's looking like there may be another 6 on the horizon anyway but it involves financing.

If you're gonna finance how about an old Mazdaspeed3?
You'll end up spending the same amount of money, and you get a Turbo 6-speed out of the deal.
And it's a honey of a motor....

MS3 would be about 4 grand more expensive than another 6i.

You're 16 and from the Detroit area, seems like a Gran Am/Prix, Neon or a Focus would fit you pretty good. It seems to be what most 16 year old drive around here. I even had a Neon at one point (let's not go there).

But ya, how about some of these?

1982 RX-7, unrealistic yes but whatever:

SVT Contour, excellent car really and surprisingly fun.

Miata, come on you know you want it

There is a huge smattering of other cars too in the area, lots of Jetta's it seems.

Out of those though I would check out that Contour.

I like the Contour idea, as well, simply as it's the closest we got to a Mondeo ST...actually, of that generation, I think it's the closest anyone got to a Mondeo ST.

It'd be worth it. I don't know anyone who's owned one and not looked back on the time fondly. Except me, 'cos I still have mine.

Take the ZX2 mentioned earlier. You'll like it. Seriously.

Barring that, the Contour would be pretty good too.

The SVT Contour looks nice and I've heard otherwise that its a good car, albeit styled like a bar of soap.

I would suggest looking on Craigslist in Detroit and Lansing to augment your current searches (if you haven't already). An Infiniti G20 is a great little car equivalent to the early 1990's Sentra SE-R (with sr20de) and can be had for a couple thousand if you look carefully.

A clean civic is never a bad platform to start off with, as it will last you forever. However, you always have to watch out for the ricers () and there's only so much modification you can reasonably do. Hondas hold their resale value well though, so you'll probably be looking at $3000 + for a mid to late '90's version with a manual.

F-body pricing is attractive but the insurance isn't. The decent Firebirds within your price range are 3.4 L V6's with automatics () and later models with the Series II 3.8 V6 are usually more expensive or taken care of poorly. The third gen Firebird is hard to find in good condition and without much rust.

If you're into controversial cars, you could always go for a Pontiac Fiero. Sits very low and handles decently (the 1988 models more so) but controllably. They can be had for next to nothing and will not have exterior rust (fiberglass body). Trouble is that the seating position can be a little bit uncomfortable and has (muscle) power locks, windows, doors, etc. See here for an example.

Good luck!

How about a Toyota MR2? This one is an AW11 for $2,500 with only 82,000miles on it!

Link.

That took me all of about 10 seconds to find. :sly:

The 6i is a good car. It ain't a powerhouse, but for overall utility, and not looking like every other car on the road, you got 'em beat.

Finding one with a manual trans may be a problem...

Pretty much exactly how things are looking.

There is a quite high chance my parking space will be getting filled by either a Dark Cherry '08 sedan or a Velocity Red '08 hatch.

If the sedan happens we actually wind up ahead on all fronts except mileage (meh, 3k mile difference). Both are automatics. Not a single worthy 6i manual near here but more than a few 6s 5-speeds about.

The 6s gets considerably worse fuel economy than the 6i for not a very big jump in performance..

My personal choice would be the dark cherry mica, UNLESS it has the tan interior.

Mazda does such a nice grey or black interior. It's a shame that they do such an ugly tan interior in the 6.

My son's 6 is Dark Cherry, and while it nearly always looks dirtier than my wife's grey 6...When it's clean, it is the beauty of the pair.

It has the tan interior :p

Then again so did Christine. When it's clean I like the look, just it gets dirty quickly

Edit: Also... 60hp isn't a considerable jump? When did this happen? 6s autobox vs 6i manual is negligible but add the stick and the 6s goes quickly.

Are we talking about the "220 hp" V6? That's a pretty cruddy engine. It has some decent mid-range torque, but it doesn't feel like the full 200 ponies. It's certainly much more powerful than the 2.3 if you wring it out, but it certainly doesn't feel very strong if you've got it stuck to the slushbox.

Got the Dark Cherry 6i today.

Could use a good professional detailing (swirls, light scuffing in the clearcoat, one light scratch in the clearcoat on the rear passenger side door) but it's otherwise perfect. Pics to come tomorrow along with it losing its stockness.

Uh, in my shopping the V-6 wasn't available with a manual.
Maybe in the earlier models, but the '08 wasn't, and the '09 isn't.

Also, the '09 is only available in 4 colors with the manual trans.
