Changes for the 'Location' Profile Field

For a few years now, I've been bothered by our Location profile field. Many of you got creative with it, which did lead to a many smiles. More often than not, however, I'd rather have a general idea of where you guys are located in the world when I read your posts, and I imagine I'm not the only one that feels that way. We now have an all-new profile location field, which contains a long list of every country along with each U.S. state and U.K. "county" (or whatever it is you guys have over there...). A pre-defined list should encourage more users to set a location, while also making posts and user profiles a bit more informative. Eventually, this new list will make it possible to search our member base to find other users in your local area or country - something which was certainly never possible before!

Now, edit your profile and update your own information!
 
It's never too late to make changes, mate. :) I've just updated the list to include the Australian and New Zealand states/regions.
 
I've got a custom flagset I did a while ago based on famous famfamfam ones, could give them to you if you want! :D

I think it would be nice to have a little flag next to it (if possible) just my 2 cents :D
 
The flags would look nice (those are especially slick), but this update is actually a precursor to GTP9 (the next layout of GTPlanet), and I am trying to reduce unnecessary images in the style.

Excellent - but you forgot the Australian Capital Territory. If that's too long just add it as ACT - we all know what it is.

Oh ok I see, hell if you need any sort of help for the next GTP layout i'd be glad to help if I can! ;)
 
I'd still like us to be able to enter a town or city within the location field too, some of the areas are pretty big. It's great to know who else is in California, for example, but it's a damned big state, and someone in San Diego, 500 miles away from me in San Francisco can hardly be considered "local"! ;)
This sort of thing would help us to narrow it down at least a little more locally.
A custom box with a 20 character limit should suffice for most member's cities, as far as I know we don't have anyone from Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch or Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotameteaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenakitanatahu! :p

That was my first thought as well, but that might just apply to the Western US. I definitely wouldn't consider people from Spokane to be in the same "location" as I am right now in Seattle. But Kyle down in Olympia probably could be local. In Michigan I would say that Joey is kinda local even though he is all the way across the state, while Chicago isn't local.

And we might want something else for the Brits. I would have trouble lumping London, Manchester and Glasgow into the same group.

Slightly OT - Your flags are quite cool, but what I really want to do, is click your Avatar... That could possibly be the coolest looking button ever !...

There are "only" 13 of them:

Newfoundland & Labrador
Nova Scotia
Prince Edward Island
New Brunswick

British Columbia

Territories:

Yukon
Northwest Territories (NWT)
Nunavut
 
Eh...can't say I'm liking this update. Although I can understand the desire for true, easy-to-recognize, and easy-to-catalog locations, I think we're losing more by excluding cities than we are gaining by forcing members to put in real locations.

Id love to see those, but only inside our profile, maybe next to our location. With an option to have it on or not.

Do we have to change the location to the pre-sets? Can I keep mine? Or must I change it? But im quite sure its like the "quote" insides "sigs" right? Next time you change you can never change back?

EDIT: Just noticed my old ones a goner :lol:

I think that at the end of the day the list of states, territories, counties, and countries will be so huge that it would have been better of leaving it the way it was.

Even in such a small country, it's quite far to travel from 1 side to the other, so provinces would be nice.

Guys, GUYS…if we put every country province or districts or states or whatever you call, we are going to have a so long list that it would take ages just to find one little country.

Sure, there are the United States states displayed so why wouldn’t my country have it to? Because, the majority of us (GTP) live in the United States and let’s not forget it is a BIG country (ok Canada and Russia are bigger).

I agree with Smallhorses idea, we could put the name of the region/state/district/or whatsoever in there, but then again, why bother? If you really want to know where someone lives, why not just ask?

And please, stop this nonsense about there are no Belgian regions or you can put the British districts in the list or the Australian……sorry to say this, but sometimes you guys look like children, always complaining about something.
 
We would need 2 lists.
1 with countries and 1 with provinces/states/regions that gets updated when you choose a country in the first list.

@ alba: Serge.D and kikie are also from Belgium.
I'm from Limburg, Kikie is from the province Antwerp and Serge is from Flemish Brabant i believe.
 
I was annoyed with the signatures some time ago, and now I can't choose my region...

It's nice to see them for US, UK, NZ and Australia, but I think GTP is an evident world wide site where there are a lot of different people.

The previous method didn't kill anyone, and a bit of freedom to customize yourself is not a disaster. That's just my opinion.

Coolie but then again I came over here a bit later than the usual lot and I thought there weren't much belgian people here, glad to know there are! :)
