Physics win.

We never used the 5 hundred to do this :yuck:
Better with the new Fiat Panda, or also the old 4x4 👍

Its not my vid I'm just pointing out that the physics do apply.. I remember the last drift challenge had a map that you could just get to the top of the hill and brake and slide down for points. So it depends on the map and terrain.. I mean honestly just go to any map, hold the brakes and then release them.. your car will start to slide in the direction of the slope. (Not handbrake, because it will engage).

It is because the field of view in bumper cam (and default cockpit view) is wide. Try to go to cockpit view, press start and change the settings to "narrower", that will probably let you experience the elevation changes better.

The downside of doing that though is that it narrows the field of view, making it more difficult to look into corners and such.

NĂĽrburgring only has 300m of elevation, which should not affect the performance of any car at that altitude

Well, I heard Martin Brundle saying that the performance difference at Spa was 7bhp. I think that only has 100m of elevation.

i use a G27, so I dont know if thats why or not.. but I drive way different while on hills/slopes/etc just because of the effect it has on the way the car

That "physics win" video takes place 100 yards before one of multiple places on that track where cars will roll uphill.

Just saying. :)

I know just how the OP feels. I can notice the elevation changes more in the 3rd person view but the other views are less noticeable, at least to me and I use the bumper view mostly.

But what helped me somewhat is sitting at eye level with the screen and also concentrating on looking the changes. I think GT5 is better at it than the previous ones.

get a forcefeedback wheel...you can definitely feel it when you are turning at crests in 2nd gear.

Nurburgring, Laguna Seca, Monaco, Mount Aso etc

That's only 1%, which is about right given the air density difference.

Trust me, at Laguna Seca you REALLY feel elevation changes.

Are you sure it's not just an illusion? There have been cases of road appearing to be slanted, even though it's just the trees that are slanted.. the way our eyes perceive gradients can't be trusted sometimes.

The ring in GT5 does not feel anything like the real one when it comes to elevation changes...

Well, how should it? The elevation changes are accurate, but how do you want to feel them without the g-forces?

I want my ears to pop ;)

Having driven the Nordschleife last year for the first time in real life, I must say I agreed with the original poster until I actually compared apples to apples.

In GT5 when you drive the Nordschleife usually it's in a fast, powerful car and then in real life, well for me anyway I was in a Puegot 308.

I really noticed the effect on the car when coming up the hill to go over Fuchsröhre as the car really seemed to slow a fair bit, but use a similar powered car in GT5 and you will see and hear how it affects it in a similar way.

I even put a comment about the effect of hills on my YouTube clips... note:

a) I'm on my honeymoon with my new wife scared to death in the passenger seat telling me to slow down
b) I'm driving from the wrong side of the car in an unfamiliar leased Puegot 308 1.6 litre Diesel
c) It looks way slower than it felt :)

Mostly GT5 feels pretty spot on.

110% sure, I have driven both irl and in game, using the same car, a audi s4 B6.

Of course the missing g-forces are a big thing, but visually it also differs, some parts is of course due to limitations of 2d display.

But overall, it feels a lot flatter than it is.

Edit: I have to add I was a bit qucik to say nothing at all, but there are definatley some parts that not as steep as the real thing.. I just replayed the ring in gt5 since have been some time since I played it :)

Well, "feeling/noticing it" is not the same as they are "wrong", because the actual 3D model is extremely close to the real thing. Games never feel like real life anyway, unless you are sitting in a really expensive simulator, which can also create accurate g-forces.

G.T. Ace I tell you the same thing all the time, I love your racing suit man. 👍

Woow, after watching your NĂĽrburgring videos I got scared of that track!
Beatiful and dangerous! Much scarier than the one in game.
And also, GT5's version looks pretty accurate from what I saw in videos. PD did a very good job with the Green Hell.

Thanks for the input, cool videos.
And congratulations to you both ;)👍

To add to the pile:

The lack of peripheral vision in the game (FOV is typically around 90 degrees maximum in a game, whereas our own is up to 180°) means that there's little information about the gradient you're currently looking up / down coming from those directions. Add to that the distortion involved with squashing that 90 degree view angle into what will be closer to 50 - 60 degrees of screen at a comfortable viewing distance (or as low as 30 degrees in some cases) and you can understand why perspective is all screwed up in any game.

Understand further that any 2D representation of a 3D environment is going to be lacking, and it becomes abundantly clear why the sense of elevation changes (visually, at least) is so underwhelming in a game.

Think of how flat steep hills look in photographs, for instance (e.g. the one Duck posted), especially when viewed from the slope itself.

I love watching replays of tracks like Nurburgring. The elevation changes at that track are really impressive visually.
But when actually driving the track(s), I never game that same impression. It generally just seems flat.
Although I'm mid-40's, I'm new to the GT series and not really sure if this is prevalent in other games as well.
I use the bumper cam view if that matters.

Using the bumper cam, the slopes don't look as drastic as they do with the replay "sidelines" camera, I agree with that. I also don't "feel" it all that much, but that I think is mainly because of the Dual Shock 3 controller limitations. I'd love to play this game with a good racing wheel. If only my family didn't have to eat...

There is real elevation change that can be felt from FFB and driving but it's hard to see due to the limitation bought by GT5's Cameras and your TV screen, you are a lot more aware of your surroundings in real life compared to GT5.

Perhaps the elevations changes can't be "felt", but they are there for sure.

For example, I suspect that the SSR7 is not perfectly flat, since in the first half of the track, the top speed of the cars are usually 5-10 kmph slower than in the second half, which leads to suspect that the first half, there is a tiny tiny tiny inclination pointing upwards.

Also, in Laguna Seca, the downhill after the Corkscrew is in many ways ever so usefull, since it provides a much needed "push" when exiting that ever so scary corner. :P

yeah, some hills look flat but when watching replays its like...where is that?
Same with corners and elevation...its more lika ok it went uphil there too?
With a wheel i bet it feels great, but without its difficult to notice some elvations. Can be the surroundings too, the trees around makes things look different. So i think both are correct but when you cant feel the fast elevationchanges in the gut then it will never feel good :)
