Yeah, this thing is going to kick-ass.

See the trailer here

A few of the players in the film:

Emile Hersch: Speed Racer
John Goodman: Speed's Dad
Susan Surandon: Speed's Mom
Christina Ricci: Trixie
Mathew Fox: Racer X

This one is going to kick-ass, seriously. 2008 is shaping up to be a big year for movies...

===

EDIT:

What happened to the Mach 5? It looks like a 6 to me. Other than that, it looks like an interesting movie and should be worth a rental. 👍

They apparently built a "real" Mach 5 for the movie. There were photos of it a while ago, let me see if I can find them...

Being Japanese, I can't believe I had never even heard of this show until I came to the States. Plus, I've never even caught a single episode. :p

I did just check out wiki to learn little bit about this show, and I liked what I read. 👍

Matthew XXXXing Fox as the Racer X! Perfect!! Nice video, Brad. 👍

Wow....i've been a Speed Racer fan since i can remember watching it on Cartoon Network a long long time ago (since Astro was launched in Malaysia) I can't believe they really are going to make a movie out of this!!! Definitely going to love it (no matter how bad the review will be :indiff:)

I had high hopes for this movie, but that trailer was absolute crap and I've been a speed racer fan my whole life. Seriously what the hell happened to the Mach 5?Also whay the hell is there #6 on it?! It looked likes ass in those previews. Also, what the hell have they done to Racer X's car?! What the hell is up with the stupid roller coaster style tracks? I remember speed racer on real race tracks or on the road doing point to point races....Man the cast looks great, but the movie seems to be way too childish for me, I thought this was going to be like the original SR but with a more realistic kick to it.

Why the hell does the Mach 5(with a number 6 on it in the movie) not look like the car they revealed at all?!

Here's some original Speed Racer for those who remember.(Ahh the memories)
God, I love the Speed Racer opening theme.

Leo (from Autoblog link)
I remember reading that the Mach 5 was based off the Chaparral 2, or something.

They could swap out the Mach 5 with the Chaparral 2J, that would be pretty sweet. Then swap all the other cars out with Can-Am racers, and set it in the mid 1960's, and swap out the main character with Jim Hall.

And it's on the nurburgring

yeah, that would be a pretty rad film.

I like the way this guy thinks. :dopey:

That said I don't have a lot to think about the trailer itself. I don't remember a lot of Speed Racer as a kid but somehow I don't think it looked so much like F-Zero GX back then. :dunce:

I'll still keep an eye on this as an racing fan though.

I just watched the trailer and all I can say is what in the hell was that? It looks like a made for TV Disney movie or something. I hate movies that are all done in CGI.

That...sucked! BIG TIME!
Susan, John, & the techno music was the best thing about that trailer.

Honestly, wtf have they done to this series? And what the hell is with all the Jackie Chan-type kung-fu fighting? I don't ever recall kung-fu fighting with ninja in Speed Racer.

Speed Racer Movie = EPIC FAIL!

I like it as well, but they say Speed Racer had shorter eyelashes in Japan...

The trailer shows influence by modern movies. Speed Racer never had to use kung-fu (except one episode I remember), and he never kissed Trixie like that in any cartoon, and while she is his girlfriend, it seems strongly out of taste when comparing the movie to the show. However, I suppose that it is better than the new Thunderbirds movie, whom, unlike Speed, tried to appeal to younger kids. I watched the original series, and the movie in comparison was a waste of time.

I like the new edge they gave to Speed's racing, however, making him a bit more competitive to justify his love of the sport.

It will be one of the 'what happened' movies, where it just fails to make any sort of profit, but hailed in the future as a classic. Or maybe not...

Plus the added fact that they weren't talking fast enough or using enough broken sentences for a speed racer remake.....

I put the official trailer in the first post, so for those who haven't seen it, feel free.

For the critics:

I thought it looked like a kids move at first, but those last 20-30 seconds (the gunplay, sexy chicks, etc) made it seem like it certainly wasn't the case. I can't see the Wachowski brothers completely blowing it (well, I guess they did with Matrix 3), it at the very least will be worth a shot in the end...

Well I can't say much. The movie will be released in May 2008, so a lot of things might happened then. But i don't know, the remake is really really different from the original show, but then again, what movie was 100% made from original show/comic/etc. ? So far, none!!! (some are good remakes, while others was just plain bad :yuck:)

Looks like the Wachowski's are trying to channel some Tarantino in there...

A lot of it looks self-consciously cheesy, almost Thunderbirds cheesy, but there are flashes of goodness in the cinematography there...

This one's a "wait and see"...

I LOVED this movie

I don't do this often but I give this one 4 out of 4 stars

I will be buying this on blu-ray

Other racing movies also use over the top action but it doesn't make sense in them because they are in the real world, in this movie it makes sense because it is real people in a cartoon world.

The ending put a smile on my face from ear to ear. The end of the race was just breathtaking.

Loved the tribute to Indy (drinking milk after winning, old footage is obviously of the Indy oval)

I've heard about it was too long, the races were too long etc etc I didn't think it was, this movie has a genuine, mature plot.

Loved the style the Wachowski brothers brought to the movie, mixing a cartoon style world with real people. Should look great in blu-ray.

This movie was just full of eye candy. The cars flashing by with their lights leaving a trail was eye candy overload

Going in I thought it was going to be a poor over the top movie with stupid hotwheels looking cars that relied on special effects. I was wrong, and I would love a game to be made of this!

Only drawback was some of the 'funny' moments weren't quite as funny as the Wachowskis may have hoped for. The fighting scenes were great, with the Wachowsi's style.

Too bad so many people arent' watching this movie because it may seem lame from a distance! Give it a chance you'll be surprised!

Best racing movie I have ever seen.

I've read a lot of really bad reviews, so I've been put-off of it so far. The TRS reviews came down with Jeff and Danny in favor (I tend to agree with Jeff a lot), Alex poo-pooing the whole thing, which does make me somewhat hopeful. I may just go tomorrow for the hell of it, but I dunno. Iron Man still seems like a better deal...

You haven't seen Iron Man, yet? Then go see that! That way, you're at least guaranteed a great movie.

That's a good point, you're guaranteed to like Iron Man, but some may hate Speed Racer. I loved it but I can see how others might not.

I've seen Iron Man. Nearly twice. I was referring to the point that I'd rather spend $6 to see that again than spending it on a movie that may not be good.

Ah, ok. Well, you're still guaranteed a good movie with Iron Man, as I said. I'll have seen it twice after tomorrow morning.

You know this film has been the biggest flop of the year grossing the lowest at the box office... EPIC FAIL indeed!

So what? Most people don't like the Wachowskis anymore because of the Matrix Trilogy, but that's because most people are submorons. Box office gross has little to do with a movie's quality; most Oscar winners weren't "smashes" at the box office.

Best racing movie I have ever seen.
Well, there ain't many out there, and most of them turn out to be like Sly's Driven, which was rather aptly branded Drivel.

Mind you, Steve McQueen's Le Mans was naturally cool.

Yeah there isn't much to compare it to. Driven defied the laws of the universe. Days of Thunder was great, but it also wasn't an accurate description of racing stock cars and race scenes where they used footage from multiple tracks during the same race was very bad.

Le Mans was just OK in my book. They did a good job with what they had, not much you can do when you follow just one race, even if it is the Le Mans 24 hours. The racing scenes were top notch, the best real racing scenes I've ever seen in a movie because there was nothing fake about them, the cars were shown in appropriate places on the track during race scenes, for example you wouldn't see them turning at mulsanne corner and the next moment they were at the start finish. Not a good example but if you've seen the move you know what I mean

I've watched about half of Grand Prix and felt it was too much of a soap opera.

The thing I loved about Speed Racer was that it was all about racing and the love of it, the plot was centered around racing and not an affair or revenge or anything but just racing.

My 7-year-old nephew was really disappointed with this movie: "Uncle Josh, there were too many special effects."

Case closed.

That's interesting, I also went and saw this with my 7 year old nephew, and he fell asleep.

I still loved the movie. It just hit all the right spots with me
