I'm finished with California. I'm leaving my wife, packing up and moving to Montana. She can have the kids, if she wants to fight over them. The reason?

Several days ago, the awesome people of the excellent state of Montana passed this...

http://data.opi.mt.gov/bills/2009/billhtml/HB0246.htm

Plus, they don't have speed laws! Talk about a free state! 👍

What really pushed me over the edge was this piece of crap in my own state earlier today...

Update on Pending Assault on Ammunition Sales in California

Please Continue to Contact the Members of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety!

Assembly Bill 962, sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin De Leon (D-45), has been pulled from the Assembly Committee on Public Safety. The bill still could be heard next week, however.

AB962 would make it a crime to privately transfer more than 50 rounds of ammunition per month, even between family and friends, unless you are registered as a “handgun ammunition vendor” in the Department of Justice’s database. Ammunition retailers would have to be licensed and store ammunition in such a manner that it would be inaccessible to purchasers. The bill would also require purchasers submit to fingerprinting, which would be submitted to the Department of Justice. Lastly, mail order ammunition sales would be prohibited.

Please continue to contact the members of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety and respectfully urge them to oppose AB962. Contact information can be found below.

So, Pako, know of any cheap places for me to live? Can I 'crash' on your couch while I look for place? How's next Tuesday for ya'?

Yeah, Pako, I've always wanted to go to Montana. You guys seem to have the most level-headed state. Solid, did you know Montana has a sound money act too?

No state sales tax. The price you see is the price you pay. Sweet.

BTW, did you know our sales tax just jumped an extra 1%? It's now 8.75% and in some areas, higher than that.

Like my county, which thought it was cool to raise it a half cent... twice!

Take note, Montana has speed limits. Just so you know.

8.75, is that it?

15% across the UK, expected to jump to over 20% to combat our awful financial situation.

Pah that's nothing compared to what the poor Danes have to put up with.

I know this is off-topic but so worth it.

Buy a new car in Denmark and first you have to pay a registration tax of 180% (no that is not a typo), and then on top of that you have to pay VAT of 25% (and that's calculated on both the value of the car and the registration tax).

So a car that cost 10,000 euros pre-tax would cost 35,000 euros after tax, a whopping 25,000 euros going to the Danish government.

Now that is a crappy tax system.

Come again?!

That is horrendous. In The Netherlands newly purchased cars are taxed with an additional 42,3% (minus €1540 then hit with another tax of - €1400 to + €1600 depending on emission values) over retail value, which I thought was bad.

I work closely with your Danish office and the guys are always moaning about it.

Its why you very rarely see an interesting car with a Danish licence plate on it.

Bonkers

Wow, Europe sucks.

Kind of puts a 9% sales tax into perspective, and its also a bit of a wake-up call to those from the UK that moan about our own taxes. Which are a pain, but nothing compared to the rest of Europe.

Europe itself is pretty high on taxes. If I recall correctly, I think the Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Sweden) have one of the highest general sale tax rate (something in the lines of 25% or more). So, 9% tax rate, compared to those is pretty damn low.

Scaff, I would say more something about this lines:
and Its also a bit of a wake-up call to those from the UK US that moan about our their own taxes. Which are a pain (taxes are allways a pain), but nothing compared to the rest of Europe.

👍

I would suggest checking out the western part of the state, since the mountains can be a great sight. I have relatives in Anaconda (near Butte), and the scenery is awesome.

I would like to have seen Montana.

I think it is less to do with the final amount and more to do with the fact that they keep raising it, when he is obviously opposed to half the stuff it goes toward.

Out of curiosity, do the Danes have an income tax too? Not having an income tax is the only way I can see them pulling this off without a revolt.

Hey man, far be it from me to take a magnifying glass to your personal life, but i have to say that i find it a bit disconcerting that you're moving 3 states away and leaving your kids over bullets. And aren't your kids really young as well?

I don't want to come off as arrogant, nor that i know anything about you or your life. But i mean, damn.

If you have programs, you have to pay for them. I don't fault that logic. Although, when you have the world's eighth largest economy, one would think that tax revenue would be a bit easier to come by.

They were talking about raising the sales tax here a little while ago, I wouldn't be surprised if they did it again. Although as I'm looking at this list of state sales tax rates, I've yet to wrap my head around the idea of taxing food. Silly indeed.

Good point !

Relax, the kids are going to be OK. They can live on their own. Just toss a few cases of pudding packs into their room with a case of peanut butter, and a bunch of loaves of bread, and they'll be just fine. Daddy needs bullets.

They might. But it isn't too much of a big deal to people because the government gives them pretty much everything that isn't taxed.

And Montana seems like a pretty cool place to live. I wouldn't agree with the politics or the ruralness, but the landscape and opportunities to do outdoorsy things are just so cool.

If I understand correctly, they have a progressive Income tax. So it depends on the overall income, but it can go up to 59%, depending on the income. It is more and less the same in every European Country

No wonder Hamlet was so messed up. I'd go insane in that kind of system.

On this taxation issue, comparisons of a single tax are pretty meaningless, in terms of we have 8% sales tax, but they have 32%. Most Americans don't even know how much tax they pay because many taxes are built into the price of the goods, like foods and gasoline. Many corporations pay taxes that are simply built into the prices of their products or services. Nobody has mentioned property taxes, and I certainly don't now how that compares.

It's difficult enough comparing tax levels between states within the US. For example, Florida has a higher sales tax than Alabama or Georgia, but no state income tax, which makes sense given the tourist traffic Florida enjoys. Let them pay some of our bills on the items they buy while hanging around. I'm told that Virginia is one of the most expensive states in which to register a motor vehicle, as it's apparently based on the vehicle's value, not just a fee like 35 bucks or whatever.

Nevertheless, the Montana bill is interesting in that it challenges the federal government's authority to regulate something that remains entirely within one of the states.

Perhaps that's worded poorly. It clarifies the state's position that the federal government has no place in its internal affairs.

And that California bill: holy crap! So "gun control" isn't working, somehow the bad guys still have guns despite all the efforts to make them illegal, so now they try "ammunition control." It still confuses them somehow that bad guys don't particularly care that something is illegal. What's hard to grasp about that?

@SL: Unless she's a Pelosi worshipper, go ahead and take the wife. :)

Hey, come on down. The weathers nice, bring a tent. :D Heck, bring the whole family down. There are some really cheap places on the high line, Eastern Montana. Unfortunately, NW Montana is becoming more of a resort town where lots of big money has moved in which has inflated much of the housing costs around here. I know if you were to buy a place, you can get into a small mansion compared to California prices I'm sure. Work sucks around here right now, the valley is up to something like 16% unemployment right now. Come on Obama, where's the fix? We had a housing/construction boom a few years ago that just stopped completely. A lot of new residents that were making their living contracting are simply out of work.

Publically I will say Montana sucks but privately I will tell you it's a great place to live. It's quickly becoming known to be a 'best kept secret'.

This new law is interesting as it challenges the Federal Government. I'm sure it will hit the supreme court and will dictate how much control the State really has which is something Obama would like to see taken away (did I say that out loud?).

Fun fact: My grandma's sister lives just down the street from the property owned by Anton Letica, President of Letica Corp which produces many of the 5-gallon buckets you see at Home Depot and such. It's a huge property that of course is guarded and only used for hunting season (even though there's a huge house on the property).
