My inability to complete my 24-hour race in time will have one benefit - all of the fastest drivers will now be hobbled by weight penalties. :dopey: Fortunately for me in future races, the Panoz seems to be minimally affected by additional ballast, according to a bit of testing that I did earlier.

I don't expect too much from myself in this qualifying round, because I've been driving an M5 on sports tires for the past two weeks. Still, I'll attempt it tonight and post my relatively meager results. I don't much like soft tires, but based on testing, the Panoz is very fun at Laguna on medium or hard tires, so the race should be very enjoyable. 👍

Welcome aboard Austin343!

I would be happy to share some of the ballast that's been assigned to my Nissan if you would like some! I'm always glad to help out a fellow competitor in this way!

Laguna Seca is going to be fun, because the AI has considerable difficulty handling high speed race cars on it, so we should all see lots of spin-outs!

See you at the races!

As I predicted, I was only able to set a fairly mediocre lap. By .029 seconds, it beat one that I had done earlier that had a T3 a quarter of a second quicker; obviously, my last sector on that lap was riddled with errors. So even though I know that I can go about 0.4 faster over the whole lap, my first splits are:

17.517 - 34.426 - 52.890

I'll wait until others set times before deciding whether to improve on that. Laguna Seca is not an enjoyable track on which to qualify, IMO; somehow, the tires always seem too soft for the track.

Be warned about the pit lane on this one. The AI sometimes has trouble making the 108 degree corner. (or something like that) But, yeah, be ware of spinners in the corkscrew. That'll definitely be the weak spot.

There are three big problem corners. The Andretti Hairpin being the first. Heavy breaking is required into the entrance of it, and passing there is not recommended. the AI should get shoved off into the dirt, so I'd hang back and let them fight it out. Next would be the corkscrew. The steepness of it can cause the back to step out. Also be warned about the AI using the short cut through the dirt here. passing here at your own parel. Finally, the deadly turn 11. Over 90 degrees, this is a first gear corner no matter what your driving. It's also the most narrow corner on the track, so it's very hard to pass, and if attempted, someone will most likely end up in the dirt. Andretti Hairpin and Turn 11 have both gotten brand new patches of asphalt where the sand traps were in real life. The corkscrew has been left unmodified because, asphalt there would make it worse and encourage corner cutting for position. But, the only had asphalt on corners that are incredibly hard and often see cars going off the track.

Anyways, have fun.

Finally, the deadly turn 11. Over 90 degrees, this is a first gear corner no matter what your driving.

Actually, in race cars, it's a third gear corner. And even then, wheelspin crops up, at least in the Panoz and in the LMP cars (as I know from last season).

Actually, in race cars, it's a third gear corner.

well, Second or third, anyway. Anyway, it's definitely the worst corner and will see a lot of late breaking and spin outs and cause the most trouble...that and the corkscrew.

Although I don't know off hand what gear I am currently using in 11 it should be noted than last season the bumper strips were considered a racing surface, that would increase the radius of that turn quite a bit.

I rode a bicycle around this track one time. It seems really wide and long at 15 mph.

I've been asked how the weight penalties are calculated, so here goes:

Qualifying results have no bearing on weight penalties, it is only race results that count.

E.g. Calculating the +5% penalty for Audi R8

(stock weight / 100) * 105 = (927 / 100) * 105 = 973.35 = 973kg

These may not be exactly the same numbers as GT4 comes up with, if in doubt send me a PM but generally the numbers are accurate to 1 or 2 kg.

Any more queries, feel free to ask.

I ended up not really being satisfied with my lap, so I reran and beat the old time by about 0.35 seconds. This lap was by no means perfect, and there is still about a quarter of a second left, but for now, I'll take it.

17.467 - 34.247 - 52.581

Times done. Quite happy with LMP, only left a few tenths on the track. GT1 was rubbish again, but didn't spend much time on it. I'm away till monday so the results will be up slightly later than usual - i'll only have limited access to internet until then.

Ran some laps last night. LMP T3 about 52.5. Will run GT1 this weekend. Looking at Austin343's T's  and without his normal wt penalty we are all in a lot of trouble. :scared:

We can hope for some engine problems.

Managed some laps last night...
The Corckscrew on LMP...:scared: is making me loose time on T3 ( compared to ABud)

T1- 16.899
T2- 32.906
T3 -51.9xx

Will put up more runs prior to Sunday... GL all 👍

I've got my times in as well.

Turns 5 and 6, especially 6, can catch you off guard if you're not careful. I wouldn't be surprised to see AI cars off in the gravel in turn 6, as well.

Times Submitted. Made improvement in GT1 but ran out of time in LMP class. :grumpy:

Submitted my LMP time with splits:

T1 17.057
T2 33.007
T3 50.934

Used 480 km/h max speed gearing for this run.

Then I tested better gearing and got splits:

T1 16.873
T2 32.604

And then , just before T3 I got screwd at the Corcscrew exit

I don't think that it will be just the AI off in the sand at turn 6. I have been there at least 10 times during my qualifying runs.:yuck:

1) You want to go fast since its a qualifying lap
2) You know the turn is blind so you need to slow down
3) Its just before an uphill, so you want to go fast and carry your speed
4) You know there's sand, so you need to slow down
5) You know Austin343 doesn't lift going thru this turn, so you need to go fast
6) You know you're not supposed to drive on the rumble strip, so you need to slow down
7) You're driving a prototype with lots of downforce so you can go fast

SO, ONCE AGAIN, I'M IN THE SAND-TRAP!!:dunce:

Fogbound, was this with a pack? My guess is that if you and I stayed together and drafted we could do laps of 7 minutes and 30 seconds.:)

Just make sure you have your bucket and spade with you

Time submitted.

Now that the deadline has passed, here's a video of my lap. It probably isn't hard to tell that I still left some time out there.

I remember Sportwagon saying he did some sort of a run for charity (or maybe it was a walk) around Laguna Seca. :)
