I never thought I could have so much fun in a 24H Race. I got tired of waiting for saves, B-spec Bob, or other online friends to help me complete the 24H Ring Endurance Race; so I decided to just pause my game over 6 days doing laps whenever I had time. What made this race fun was that I did not use a Le Mans class racing car, so while the AI was using lvl 19-23 race cars, I used my lvl 12 GTR V-spec ’09. The fun came in the shear uncertainty of whether I could win and how much focus I had to have during EVERY second of the race. It’s amazing how addicting that uncertainty can be (and the fear of whether or not the power would go out; which grows as you approach the end:nervous:).

I started in the rain and quickly got nearly a 5 minute lead, but as the rain stopped and the track was half dry, one AI overtook me and gained a 5 minute lead by hour 3. I figured I was still secure for second place so I thought perhaps even a silver was worth it if I could drive a real legal car on the Ring; but to my amazement I SLOWLY caught up by hour 11 and SLOWLY increased my lead to nearly 8.5 minutes (just over a lap) by the end of the race. I lapped him in the second last hour of the race: at which point he tried to pass me on a turn, went off the track and wiped out (I had to stop and take a pic! See below). The original rabbit, the 905, looked like it had got into a wreck at some point too. The whole time I feared that it might rain again and I might lose my flow (it did get really dark at one instance, but then fortunately it turned very sunny!).

I made several mistakes: 1) I had accidentally lost the tune just days earlier that I had used on this car for months so I had to relearn a new tune and 2) I never tuned my transmission properly for the track; I left it set at a top speed of 199 mph so I topped out at 196/7 mph very early on the long straightway (but this gave me much acceleration on the rest of the course); however I suspect that the AI doesn’t actually use tuned transmissions because only the R10 and 905 seemed faster than me on the straightway.

According to my calculations I averaged about 3 seconds per lap more than the rabbit (Audi R10 Race Car ’06). While I started out in the 8:30s and 40s, I eventually got around 8:10s. My best time was 8:04.472. I had to pit every fourth lap or else my tires would not last when I pushed too hard.

Anyways: the point of this thread. I want to promote and see what non-LM, non-race cars people can or have used in this ultimate race in order to challenge themselves. Post your car, results, and experiences: if you can do this race in production street car rather than race car I think you have done something extra special to be proud of (besides the insanity of racing for 24 hours).

[P.S. Keep your camera handy because the recorder automatically stops shortly after 13 hours and there is no fast foward option anyways.]

That is really cool. I'm very impressed by your accomplishment. I would like to know a few things, namely the PP/HP/Tires/Weight of the car you've used in the race. I'll give this a go I think, probably on Le Mans 24hour race, which may be more difficult due to the high speed straights, but we'll see.

I have been doing the Indy 500 in the Audi R10 with Racing Hards, in which my first race I finished 2 laps down in 6th due to pushing the tires too hard and having a blow out in the final few laps. As you say, it certainly makes it interesting after the first 10 laps of an endurance and you're not making any ground on the leading pack and pushing as hard as you can. Good stuff! :)

6 days? My PS3 is an old fat one that makes quite a bit of noise. I'm not going to risk that.

Kudos though. If I had the time, I'd probably end up using an X2010 or another LMP/Group C/GT class car. I have that whole "let's just get this over" mentality. I found the Nurburgring 4 hours a lot of fun, and that's probably my limit, so I'm going to be doing that race again and again, but 24 hours... is too much.

Thats a solid effort there, great work! 👍👍👍

Im thinking maybe a 458 or McLaren MP4-12C might make good cars for this challenge. Shame Im not close enough to try it :(

And interesting note to make is that Ive read on other forums (I think one here on :gtplanet: aswell) that the Audi R10 was a dissapointment of a car, and that it didnt offer anywhere near the pace people expected it to. Yet it came second to albeit marginally better cars. Could make an interesting comparo with and R8 LM car..

But still congratulations on your achievment! What were the specs of the GT-R?

Make sure the R8 '01 and '05 aren't there because they generally do at least a couple of laps more than the R10. A supped up non stealth McLaren F1 could probably do it. Just watch out you don't launch it in the air at the end of some of the hills. I don't have any interest in that because I like to race with race cars.

Using what you could consider to be an uncompetitive car (compared to the rest of the field) is what stops the Endurance events becomming monotonous. The best races I had on GT4 were in the F1 series where I used the Audi R8 LM, I was generally getting slaughtered by the FGT's but managed to claw the time back through pit strategy, on the Seoul track I only won by about 4 secs, another lap and I'd have been toast.

Looking forward to the 'Ring Endurance but can't afford the time to leave the console on pause, currently planning on using the R8 LMS but I might have to reconsider...

I find it hard to belive that a GT-R SpecV would be able to do this in real life, so I probably would not dare to even think about doing this race, in a road car.
Now, having read your experience, I'm not too scared to do it though.
Good Job. 👍

How can you win against these race-cars?

I think the reason is the "good old rubberband effect"....

Kind of interested to know the AI pit strategies - in B-Spec I used the R10 in the 4 hr Enduro and there was only fuel for 4 full laps. Stopping for fuel has always been an AI weakness.

Good job!

I think all of the A-spec races are more interesting when I go into them with an equal or lower car and the same tires the AI is using. I recently ran all of the seasonal truck events in a truck with 440 PP and Sports hard tires. Won them all, and might try it again with lower PP and comfort soft.

In fact, I think the purses ought to be adjusted for the car and equipment you are using vs the AI players. If you use a maxed out car with racing soft tires, you should get a small percentage of the winnings, but if you use a lesser car, you should get more money.

Thinking about doing the Le Mas 24H with a Audi R8 (road car, tuned up ofcourse), anyone think its possible?

There are tunes for the R8 scattered in the Tuning forum, hope they may help. :)

This is some achievement, so close, only 2 laps in front after 24 hours. I bet it must of been intense, and you must of been concentrating, unlike if you had a le-mans and took it easy. I would try this aswell, only until the in-race save is updated, i can wait so yeah.

I thought I was ambitious for wanting to do it in a Lexus RM ISF, damn, you got skill. Well done.

That's Citizen Kane, isn't it...?

Yes, and one of the best of its kind (animated gif's on the internets, that is) because it loops pretty seamlessly.

OP, good job! I've been waiting on the promised in-race saves to do the enduros since Kaz tweeted about them a little while back.

Thanks for the compliments and I’m glad to see I’ve inspired some people to try something different.

… I would like to know a few things, namely the PP/HP/Tires/Weight of the car you've used in the race. …

My GTR was maxed out on everything and had full weight reductions. It started at 866 HP (648 PP) and was 825 HP (640 PP) when it finished the race. I used racing slicks. Rear down force 17 (default). Transmission top speed at 199 mph.

It was strange. The Peugeot 905 was the fastest AI for the first 12 or so hours, then the R10 slowly overtook him and kept the lead.

Yeah the AI seemed to be pitting every four laps. I also noticed that sometimes during the fourth lap (especially for the Peugeot 905 for the first 12 or so hours of the race) the AI was noticeably slower than his first three BEFORE pitting. I suspect the AI does experience significant tire wear and drive accordingly. I’m not sure about their fuel levels: I know that I could just barely get 6 laps in when the track was wet (I could always do 5 as long as I had the tread; but didn't like to risk how quickly they wear out when only a 1/3 is left). I suspect that sometimes the faster AI’s would get stuck behind other less-fast AIs on narrow parts of the track. I do know that the 2nd place AI seemed to need to pit for the same amount of time as I did (about 1 minute pits), so if they used more fuel than me, it didn't show up.

You did it with bent wing and all! Congratulations!!!👍

Yeah I really did not enjoy the almost dry track during the night. Also I think the red Citroen Race Car tried to take me out. Seriously…the car was so wide and he seemed to swerve into me on two occasions right when I was passing him.

I ran this in B-spec twice, and had much stronger oppositions.

R8, Bentley Speed 8, BMW V12, 787 etc

Do they dumb down the oppositions if you show up in a lesser car?

Yeah I've had a few run-ins with that guy that drives the red Citroen Race Car, he needs to be black-flagged for sure!

Excellent job!

I finished three endurance races in the last three days. I used the Caterham Fireblade for all three. The first was the 4hr 'ring, I won by 10 seconds. Not my best driving. The next was the 9hr Tsukuba, I won by 20 laps. Not bad. The last was the Grand Valley 60 lap. I used sport hards and won by 50 or so seconds.

I've been thinking of trying the fireblade on the 24hr enduros but I think it would get trashed. Especially the Sarth streights.

Any thoughts? Can the little blade do it?

Wow. beat all those high-end cars? Pretty impressive!

I wonder if the Alfa Zagato could do this? Doubt it, was thinking either that, the 330 or the 1969 GT40.

I've seen comments on this forum that the Zagato is comparable to the Fireblade. I have one in my garage but have never tried it.

Time to go tune hunting. Hi ho a'merry'o...

Yeah I'm thinking it would get creamed at Sarthe, but I wonder if its high power to weight ratio would give it some excellent accelerations on all the Ring turns; though I don't know how it handles. You might even get a lot of acceleration even with the transmission set at a higher speed for the straightway: mine topped out early at 197 mph; and I suspect I could have gained several seconds if I had reached higher speeds. The real question is what were your lap times during the 4 Hour Ring? Were you able to get into the 8:10-20s?

I wonder if the Alfa Zagato could do this? Doubt it, was thinking either that, the 330 or the 1969 GT40.

I have my doubts that the Alfa Zagato could do it, but am not very familiar with the car; I do not remember it having impressive acceleration or a very high top speeds, but it's been a while. Although I would wonder if it could get more laps in on fuel and tires: if it could get 6 laps in while the AI only gets 4 you would gain an extra minute every 12 laps. I'm thinking the 330 and the GT40 could both do it fairly easily.

hey bro how hot was your ps3 after being on for 6 days. When i did the 24 hour le mans race mine was on for 3 days. Mine got so hot i had to trun the fan on in my room. Its awesome to see poeple using some underpowerd cars for some races makes them more intresting and fun. I used the Audi r10 for my 24 hour le mans.
