Keep in mind you can also still use the "Search This Forum" or "Search This Thread" features, available in the red bar near the top of the page. That's what I typically use here myself to help narrow the results to a particular range of topics.
I feel this may not have been a wise choice. We like to encourage people to use the search bar but if we already have people not able to use it easily, what's to motivate them and others to find and use it at all?
No, it's obviously not the ideal way to advertise the search, but it has to do for now. The Google search is currently accessible from the sidebar (on pages that display it).
