So, my first car has been purchased.

1999 Honda Civic S

It cost £675 from the nearest Wilson's, which happened to be just down the road. MOTed until October, I had to purchase tax, as well as insurance of course, both of which are paid for for the next 12 months now. Genuine mileage of ~76,000 miles, which is quite good for a car this old.

It says VTEC on it, but considering it's only a 1.5i, that's doubtful.

Here is said 1.5 injected engine.

Impressive interior for <£700 and 13 years.

Commodious rear.

I plan on giving it a right good clean, especially the engine bay. Updates to follow in this thread.

Nice! I've always had a thing for those Euro Civics. Looking at the motor, I think it might have VTEC. It looks like a D16Y8, which is a 1.5 with VTEC.

Sweet deal. Give it a good run through the revs, may not have been near the redline for a decade if the previous owners were just nipping to the shops.

Yeah, that's the Honda customer info book. The log book was also included, but I keep that at home.

I agree, it's a good looking car. I'd be happy if it really is a VTEC, I just thought that only the 1.8 and above VTIs were the 'real' VTECs

It's a cracking deal to be fair. I haven't given it the full beans yet, I'll wait until I've given it a bit of a seeing to first. That of course depends on the brilliant Welsh weather.

If you look in the circled region, you should find an engine code. If it says D16Y8 or D16Z6, then it's a VTEC SOHC. If it says D16Y7, or anything aside from the first two I mentioned, it's a Non-VTEC SOHC.

It's definitely a y8. The z6 had a "VTEC" valve cover. Want to say the y8 was also the only d-series with the straight "HONDA" valve cover. So unless it was replaced.

I mean, there is a VTEC badge on the back and there's no record of the badge being a cosmetic aftermarket piece according to the service book, so it could be a genuine thing.

I'm going to take it for a proper drive through the country next weekend. I'll see if that Valve Timing and Electronic Control kicks in along the dual carriageway. Some snaps could be on the cards too.

To clarify, it is a VTEC, and I think it's what's known as a "VTEC-e".

Basically, rather than the "VTEC jus' kicked in, yo!" style of VTEC which changes the cam profile at higher revs for more power, the VTEC-e has a lower step at around 2500rpm. Above this, the engine operates as normal. Below, the cam profile changes so that it only uses three of the four valves per cylinder, reducing fuel use but giving it reasonable torque.

Ah, tree'd above - FordMKIVJ5's little spec sheet seems to suggest I'm thinking of the right engine.

It's a nice little engine, and probably attached to a gearbox with incredibly long gearing. I drove one of the Civics with that engine years ago before buying my MX5 (in fact, here's the test drive post) and it did 70mph in second.

Also, congrats on the new car. Nice little runner for not a lot of money.

Whatever you do, don't tell my mum! She wanted me to have a Kei car, which would struggle to negotiate the incline my street is built on. Still, 114 isn't to be sniffed at for a first car...

I'm in work at the moment, but I'll have a read of that article in a bit. It's a cracking little car to be fair, very nice. My best mate is both impressed and jealous; he's had no luck with cars and is currently on his second Clio.

Engine bay needs a clean, but I've got no days off until my birthday now so it'll have to wait.

If it had VTEC, you would feel it kick in after a certain Rev range...
On my car, 'VVTI' kicks in around 4000RPM.

Edit: oh like your little mate said, It does have VTEC! So I was right thinking you should feel it 'Kick-in'!

Certainly not sniffing at it! Most first cars seem to have somewhere between 60-90 hp.

Parts bin. It's a hangup from the fact that shape of Civic is near-identical to the Rover 400 of the same period. They used different engines and the front end is a little different, but otherwise they're pretty much the same inside and out.

Long time no post on these forums, due to no internet connection at home.

Here we are in Porthmadog in West Wales admiring a beautiful sunset. Not the best quality, but it was a sensational scene.

hfs: Yeah, it is a Rover clone but mine is a nifty one. Rides well, and it still feels relatively tight and taught. Air con and electrics all still working fine. And the wooden panel is a bit driving gloves, but it's not so bad. It's something away from the plastic and fabric found elsewhere in the car.

Sureboss: A lot of Civics I know are very Barry, especially the EG Civic near me which has a bucket for an exhaust and is completely macaroni yellow. But I'm very happy with it.

Except, for the git who drove into and up the side of it. This is the resultant damage. The bumps and scratches are much more visable up close. I am fuming.

Ouch. That's affected an annoying amount of panels. May be repairable by one of those dent guys, but may not be cheap. Has it properly broken the paint anywhere or is it just scratched?

They did indeed. I live in a narrow, dead end street, and the prime suspects are the gypos who live down the street. Who drives down a cul-de-sac at 30mph? (!)

Overnight slack clutch pedal. Mechanic friend of family to investigate. Silver paint means every little scrape is visible, the rear three quarter especially, so can any of you recommend any remedies?
