Let me preface this by noting that there are a good number of people here that this doesn't apply to And I applaud you. There are some of you who very obviously need this lecture though, and please read this all the way through. Also, this is targeted at members who have been here a while, not brand new "newbies". With that aside...
[post mode="soapbox"]
At GTP, we've instilled the "Search and look before you post" mindset, and it works fairly well.
There are some of you who take this way too far though.
When someone makes a thread, and they obviously didn't do some research on the subject beforehand, it is not your responsibility to go in and rip on them. There are a good number of you who see such a thread, go in, and start yelling "Mods, close this thread!", "Terminate this thread!", "Where are the mods?!?!?!?!?", "SEARCH first, n00b!", "You obviously didn't search you dummy!". No, no, no! Don't do that, because it upsets the new member, it's a waste of space, and it upsets me and other moderators.
If you see such a thread, you can go in, and politely explain, in detail, what they did wrong. Politely explain to them how to use and where to find the Search function; politely explain that the Read This threads have a good deal of information; politely explain that most everything has already been covered by another thread. It's not your job to be a jerk and spit on a new member who just happens to be excited at discovering a GT forum. It's not your job to tell the mods how to handle the situation I get particularly annoyed when I receive a report along the lines of "Ban him, he's annoying me" or "Close this useless thread". We will decide how to handle the thread whether it can be saved, if it needs to be closed, or if it needs to be round-filed. The last thing I need is for somebody to rudely tell me how to handle a thread that I haven't even seen yet. (I don't mind when people make suggestions as to where a thread should be moved.)
Lastly, 20 members are not needed to tell one person that he/she should've searched first one person can go in, explain the search and Read This threads, welcome them to the forum, then report the thread. Those of you who insist on being an a-hole and ripping on the member are only spamming, not helping.
BTW, being polite doesn't mean that you can't be stern It just means that you can't be childish and start yelling at that person. If you're yelling at someone, it's not going to get the thread closed faster you people have to realize that I can't hear you from the Rumble Strip.

Again, there are some of you who are very, very good at simply explaining to a member what the problem is, politely and in good detail. There are many people though who are yelling just to hear themselves yell, and I will not tolerate that any longer. From now on, if you rip on a brand new member for not searching beforehand ("rip" meaning that you start yelling at them and being rude), and don't offer anything helpful to them, I will issue you a warning. Please note that I do understand the frustration that occurs when the same person makes ten useless threads then you have a better excuse for getting mad at them. But don't attack the new members. Help them for pete's sake.
