MONEY DOESN'T BUY HAPPINESS - DOH!

I had been playing GT4 for about 3 weeks and was getting along fine except
for a cronical need to mod every car to win races. Then I won the Camaro LM
Race Car and took it to a few races and had no problem winning. Granted, the
other cars were no competition but it made me think about my 'wasteful'
ways... I was spending about 100k in mods per car and only using it for a
few races. The visits to the ATM were quite frequent. I had won almost 2
million credits but never had more than 30k in the bank. And I was only at
13%!!!

I finally hit the crisis point when I did the classic series in the Pro
Hall. I souped up the Cougar to the point where it outperformed the Cobra
and Buick Special but I had the hardest time beating them at the Ring. I did
manage to beat the Cobra once but it was a practice run and not part of the
Championship. I ran the championship and the only race I didn't win with the
Cougar was the Ring. The Cobra kicked my ass badly...

So I won the championship but it was bitter-sweet: I blew so much money on
upgrades to win at the Ring and in the end I didn't. If it wasn't because I
run so many practice runs at the Ring (finishing 2nd) I would have actually
lost money in the Championship. I didn't sleep well that night...

When I woke up in the morning I was having a full blown Scrooge attack: I
could not get over how much money I'd blown and whenever I thought of a race
I'd won I thought "I didn't need to buy that car" or "I coulda won without
the 200HP mods!". By the end of the day Scrooge had taken over.

SCROOGE'S BIG ADVENTURE BEGINS

The first mandate from Scrooge was to start over. That was a hard decision
to make: I was at 13% and it had taken a couple of weeks and a lot of money
to get there. I wasn't looking forward to re-doing any of the rally license
tests (I suck at rallying) but I was so hooked on mods that most of the
races were 10 pts or less and that was getting pretty boring : I was mowing
the grass in every race but still managed to win thanks to HP superiority.

I also did some research on the boards and found that someone went up to
62.5% without buying a car. Scrooge was very happy to hear about that! The
guy had spent about 2,000,000 cr tunning his cars, something Scrooge wasn't
happy about. But after confirming that there is no way to do 100% without
buying a car Scrooge decided to delude himself into thinking that he could
do 62.5% without tuning any cars.

So the memory card was erased and Scrooge went on the biggest adventure of
his driving life!

THE PLAN

Scrooge wasn't too keen on having to re-do the license tests. He was
perfectly happy with the 80 bronze medals from the first gamesave. So after
reading the prize and events list from top to bottom a few times he
concluded that getting silver in all the licenses was gonna give him the
easiest way out (of the license tests) whilst still getting good enough
cars.

But at the same time he didn't want to spend a lot of time on the license
tests so he decided that he was going to do as little work on them as
possible. This meant getting a bronze, winning a car and taking that car to
as many races as it qualified for until it was not possible to win any other
races. Then he would go back to licenses / missions to win another car or
use whatever car he'd won with the first car and repeat the cycle.

THE RULES

1. No car buying.
2. No car tuning: No new tires, car washes, oil changes, nothing! This is
Scrooge we are talking about!!!
3. Each race can only be won once. Unless it is part of a championship in
which case it can be won once as practice and once as part of the
championship. Once the race is won it is history, we have no time to waste
here!
4. There is NO SHAME in running 1 pt races. Scrooge believes that if you
have a car that can win the race and it does not cost you anything then you
should use it. A-Spec points be dammed!
5. No Wallriding, grass mowing or purposely pusing other cars off the road.
6. Qualifying is permitted for championships.

DIARY

Scrooge thought that keeping a diary would just be a waste of ink and
recycled paper but he gave in after admiting that he wasn't going to be able
to keep track of what he'd done/won without some sort of written record. So
he printed the prize list and made a notepad out of recycled paper. For
writing he started using a 4 yr old pen that wasn't loved by its first owner
anymore (the guy just didn't know how to get the most of pens he thought).
At first he tried writting as little as possible but as time went by he
started writing more, specially on the hard races so that he could keep
track of his progress and see if it was a vain effort to persevere using the
same car on a race he'd lost by 30 seconds :-)

NOTE: He didn't keep track of the real life dates but he started on April 20 and got to 25.6% on May 23. Average playing time was 1.5 hours/day.

The following is a transcription of Scrooge's diary from 0 to 25%:

I started with the 10k credits you get by default. I happily put that on a 100 year Term Deposit and got busy racing.

At 25.6% Scrooge is very happy indeed... except for the 4k cr blown on the lupo and the odd oil change... ah and the 5 cr used to take the Cien to do the 1/4 mile. it did it in 11.something.... Scrooge didn't care... it cost 5 credits after all :-)

It seems as if Scrooge is doing well! Looking at all the prize cars, I realize that he will be able to get much farther on his quest. If it weren't for that damned truck race, you could finish all of the main tarmac halls without buying a single car! Oh, excluding the Miata endurance, of course.

It looks as though I'll have another specialty game to do after I complete my first 100%...

Sounds like tremendous fun, my kind of challenge. :)
I'm currently trying to beat the Spitfire cup in a bone stock Spitfire on N2 (Com) tyres, which Scrooge'd definitely approve of since they cost an enormous 0 Cr! 👍 👍
It's hard work though! Got El Capitan and SSR5 Clubman done so far. Can't seem to get better than 3rd at Motegi, the snap-oversteer of the Spitfire isn't helped by non-grippy tyres!

Great write-up...

Just a note to Mr. Scrooge. The 54 Corvette is a fantastic race car and is able to win the Spider and roadster with a fairly inexpensive mod - Racing transmission or full customization. This car has the worst stock transmission i ever saw. Put a closer tranny in and you will see a huge difference - definately worth the few grand for the sports tranny or racing close tranny.

Just my 2 cents - have fun.

Thanks.
I know that a customizable tranny will make a huge difference (When I did it to the Cougar in the first gamesave it went for topping out at 125MPH to 201MPH). Thing is that I am trying not to spend any money.

However I can see a time around 35% where I will have to do some mods. Starting with buying dirt tires for the Toyota rally car. I haven't done about half of the rallies because they require dirt/snow tires and none of my cars have it.

The issue is tires. I have a bunch of cars that do not qualify for a bunch of races because they have race tires or don't have dirt/snow tires.... that means diving into scrooge's wallet and that is very difficult my friend!

I was doing this with GT3 and got pretty far before I gave up. I've also started a similar approach with GT4 but I'm finding it rather frustrating. I've purchased only two cars so far - my S2000 I started with and a truck. I have been doing upgrades, and if it weren't for the hundreds of thousands of credits I've wasted on cars I can't even race, I would actually have some cash right now. As it stands I think I've got about 7K in the bank and a garage full of crappy cars.

Can you downgrade your cars with R-tires to N3 tires? I believe those are free...

Amazing results so far, I applaud your efforts! 👍

So far i've gotten all silvers in the B-License, and i've used the Mazda KUSABI to win the Sunday Cup. I'm gonna do the FF cup later :)

I haven't really tried. Or maybe I did but couldn't... I can't remember. I had so many other races to run that I didn't bother too much.

If it can be done I will be trying this on the supercar festival... I have about 5 cars that can do it if not for the tires :-)

Sounds to me like you own an s2000 in real life (the avatar and this hint it). Is that correct? I had one in 2003... sad to sell it but moved countries (from LHD to RHD so couldn't bring it).

The supercar festival is unmodified cars only. That means no Concepts (no Cien) and no race cars. Sorry, but anything that starts on race tires won't be allowed in - even if you change them.

You'll need to win a nice fast (expensive) road car. The only ones I can think of as prize cars that can do it are the Yellow Bird and the Speed 12 (and you need to buy a TVR to get that one). Mr Scrooge may need to take the locks off his chequebook for that one................ :indiff:

Well, I just tried the downgrade the tires path for the boxer spirit compo. I did it to the Impreza touring and it worked great!. Beat the ruf like it wasn't there. It was a quite shocking having almost no grip on the truns (even though the car has a bigg a$$ wing).

So I have the Yellow Bird.... I may try it on the super car festival then.... I didn't know it qualified..

^This^ is true, as you will need to spend a few thousand to get the Yellow Bird to qualify. I would know, that's what I used.

Thanks for the tip buddy. I did to the Impreza touring for the boxer spirit compo and won easily.

I also did it to the s800 race car for the japanese compact compo but the field is so tight the bes I can do so far is 2nd in the 1s race 5.9 seconds behind 1st place. It is a 79 point race BTW... The main problem is that the car is like the Autobianchi: you better not downshift into second or the race is over!

Why didn't I ever think of this before?! I let wanting to drive every car right away ruin it for me. :guilty:
Amazing job. Keep us updated. 👍

you are going to need to break out the VISA card when you want to drive the Shelby manufacturer race. Save yourself a good chunk of cash and buy the Series 1 SC '03. 200 Aspec point races for the shelby series right there.

Scrooge doesn't use plastic. "If you can't pay for it with the coins in your pocket you shouldn't have it!" says the grumpy old bastard :grumpy:

Yes. there will be definetely a time to buy several cars. Just don't tell Scrooge yet.. he is happy as a clam just having finished mission 29 and gotten to 30% 👍

Scrooge has been having a lot of fun racing 1 - 3 pt races on N3 tires.... 500HP and less is no big deal... 500-700 requires concentration.... 800+ you gotta be crazy ( or a real cheapscakate) to try a 5 race championship....

37.5% and about to start the British GT championship on the Jaguar race car with N3 tires... :-)

40.2% and the choice of races is starting to dry up.... got the 1000 mile championship in the Euro Hall and all the endurance races.... it is going to be a loooonnnng 9.8%! (To get to o50%)

Assuming those two will get me to 50% that is....

I Liked To Read this post, 'cuz I also have figured what races you could win with all prize cars, some cars is still undriveable in races.

Keep It Going, Scrooge :)

But you can't beat whole game with 4000cr, you need to buy an dirt and snow tyres too :dopey:

Unfortunately not yet, but I'm well on my way. An S2000 falls under the catagory of "toy" and I don't like making payments on toys, so it's a cash deal for me.

Sampyla23, Glad you lilked it. Yes, I will buy dirt & snow tires but willl try to stick too one car for those events so that I only have to buy tyres once.

LoudMusic, I know what you mean. I got the S2000 as my 30th b'day present (to myself), it was a weekend toy. Since it was a toy and a gift it was paid in cash. I wanted one since the day they came out in late 99 so I saved for 3 years to buy one (gave up going out drinking with friends for it - $30/week! and cable TV - $70/month!)

Update: Doing the 1000 miles A spec is really long! Currently on lap 33 of 99 of the 3rd race (Cote D'Azur) pitting every 10 laps. First stint was 13 laps but was doing 2:02xxx in the last 3 laps instead of 1:59xx (which is the current average). Fastest lap so far was on lap 30 at 1:57.8xx and I am now consistently lapping around 1:59.3xx. 2nd place (Merc SL) is 3 laps behind.

It is taking almost two days per race. 3 and a bit hours each means I have to do 1.5 hours in the morning before work and 1 hour after work....

40.6% complete... Yay!!
