The Psychology of Urinals

As I wandered into the toilets (rest room? Whatever) the other day and happened across the urinals, a thought occurred. Why do I choose the particular urinal I choose?

This poll aims to determine whether urinal choice is random or follows a set pattern.

So, assume that there are 5 urinals as you enter the toilets:

Doorway..... Urinal 1..... Urinal 2..... Urinal 3..... Urinal 4..... Urinal 5 Wall

That is the urinals are in a line from #1 nearest to the doorway through to #5 next to the far wall, furthest into the toilet area.

THREE urinals are vacant, the fifth one - nearest the wall - and the first one - nearest the door - have a "users". Which urinal do you choose?

(feel free to visit the first thread. Poll will remain open there until September 9th)

(and this will be the last polled thread - I promise)

5th. It means you can only have one person next to you. You can't be surrounded!

Only 2, 3 and 4 are vacant, as is my understanding. I honestly would wait, I wouldn't use any.

Not a poll option - and besides someone's already there. Two men into one urinal doesn't go, unless you're REALLY good mates.

ONE and FIVE are occupied. 2, 3 and 4 are vacant.

3. You've got the comfort zone on all sides and one of the other guys is bound to leave sometime soon.

Numero 3.1 Urinal Buffer Zone On Each side provides comfort and security.

Hey Famine, you should do another one where urinals 2 and 4 are occupied.

#3 because there's space between you on each side.

No... I think people are starting to get... pissed off... :D

 But that one would be a good one.

Doh! I missread

Number 3 then!

Hopefully, if anyone else was to enter, they would wait for a "cushioned" urinal to become available.

No way, I like where this is heading and it's making for some really funny discussion.

#3 is the only non-gay choice.

#3. Duh.

This one is a no brainer... #3

3 of course... Comfort zone on both sides !...

Hey Famine, you should do another one where urinals 2 and 4 are occupied.
in that case, we all know the correct choice would be...
the door. You can always go find unoccupied alley.

#3 – what else?

I want a poll with #2 and #5 occupied – that would be interesting.

Famine, are we going to see a full report after this thread about all 3 threads? I'm kinda curious what this all means to you.

Oh, and #3 of course.

Sure... your just trying to get in our heads... :grumpy:

Anyway, like I said I don't go to public places a lot or unless I have too but in this case if the're are a lot of people I don't go in. I'm really really beginning to not like crowds and for this situation that will fit into a "large crowd".

Oh, and #3 of course.

No. I'm just stringing you all along.

Still, looking at the three threads thus far, we've got enough results (>50 in each of the first two) to make it interesting.

Three, I think this one was pointless famine you've eliminated the two most interesting ones. And no one is going to say four or two , because oblivious three would allow you to feel comfortable. Also if you pick four or two then that way you'll seem a little creepy, but if you take the third one the next guy in will feel creepy.

This one is the MOST relevant of all.

With the empty stalls there was a clear bias towards the far side. With the furthest one occupied there became a clear bias towards the near side - with the previous 2nd favourite option totally eliminated. In this one there is, currently (from 24 respondants), 100% approval for just one stall - for all the guff in previous threads about it "not being gay" to stand next to another dude at a urinal...

I may do a couple more polls, to explore stranger options...

Where's Ten when you need him? This poll needs variety, dammit.

That WOULD be interesting--people have surprised me so far.

I would take #1 in that case--2 might leave soon, and at least you won't have to run the risk of having someone on BOTH sides of you.

This seems logical to me, but people defied some pretty obvious things in the second poll, by choosing # 2 and FORCING the next guy to stand next to someone. And having chosen #2, they had double the chance of getting someone on SOME side over the guy in 5. Maybe they just weren't thinking ahead?

I chose 3 because I like a virtual no mans land between me and the next guy.

If 2 and 5 were occupied I'd choose 1. I dont like being surrounded.

Exactly what I was saying! Forcing a #2 & #5 situation is awful – the person behind you has to make a horrible, horrible decision: Look like a jerk by holding up the line, or stand by someone who obviously doesn't want to be stood by. It's a losing situation.

Or instead of making a decision you could use a stall, more privacy and most of the time there isn't deliberation between which stall you should choose.

Everyone better pick three or they are scary.

Everyone better pick three or they are scary.
Or just very inconsiderate of other people's space and privacy.

This scenario was a no brainer.
