Sony & Imersion reach an agreement on the lawsuit, http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070301/sfth075.html?.v=79

SAN JOSE, Calif. and FOSTER CITY, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Immersion Corporation, (Nasdaq: IMMR - News), a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced the companies have agreed to conclude their patent litigation at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and have entered into a new business agreement to explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation® format products.

"We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us," said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. "Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."

Looks like FFB will be coming back!!👍

I guess that makes the future of force-feedback pretty solid, don't it?

So, everybody can just shut the hell up about how much GT5 is gonna suck without it.

Who's wondering if a new SixAxis Rumble pad is on it's way?

Wow im surprised! That is great news! So that means its a matter time before Sony realeases an update for FFB to become available or F1 and GTHD doesnt contain the code for the FFB to work?

Anyway that's great that Sony as left aside the rumble thang and move foward with FFB, can't wait to feel the FFB combine with the gameplay, graphics and sound experience that the PS3 provides.

Thanks for sharing the Moose!

Immersion and Sony Computer Entertainment Conclude Litigation and Enter Into Business Agreement

Immersion Corporation, (Nasdaq: IMMR), a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced the companies have agreed to conclude their patent litigation at the U.S.

Immersion will receive the amount of the judgment entered by the District Court, which includes damages, pre-judgment interest, costs, and interest, in addition to retaining compulsory license fees ordered by the District Court which were already paid. Terms of the business agreement between the parties provide SCE with certain new rights with respect to Immersion's patent portfolio. Additional financial terms are not being disclosed. The conclusion of this litigation and the agreement will have no material impact on Sony's consolidated earnings forecast announced on January 30, 2007.

"We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group Chief Operating Officer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."
👍👍 (about bloody time!)

Freaking A! That also may explain why Sony didn't jump at the whatever companies (something Fish?) offer for rumble. As a side note, it should shut everyone up who was complaining about the lack of FFB in GT:HD.

I see them lowering the Sixaxis to $34.99 and selling the DS3 for $54.99(make up that $90mil) :D. That should make all the rumble guys happy. i'll stick with th SA as i dont not miss rumble.

I don't care about the rumble very much (no rumble with a mouse and keyboard ;)) but I'm glad that we'll see FF available once again.

what about all the games that have already came out w/o rumble?? will they release new versions of these games to incorporate this feature??

Wow, didn't think it would happen this quickly. If they release the F1 game with FF compatibility and update GTHD, I'll be in the market for a PS3.👍

Great news indeed, hopefully the terms of that agreement allows Sony to use FFB immediately

ahem

inferno on Jan 17
we know that no PS3 games will support the vibration function in the controllers untill the lawsuit is resolved. the fact that the controller dosnt have the hardware for it means nothing. Nothing is stoping sony from releasing the sixaxis2 once the lawsuit is settled.

:sly:

[EDIT]
Oh, by the way, this is excelent news.

No. Some games can be patched. But its not going to happen.

What do you mean it's not gonna happen!?!?!?! The guy from Sony has already hinted at them making patches available for non-ffb games!

I hope Studio Liverpool finally cums to their senses and release an FFB patch for Formula 1 '06....then I will FINALLY buy a PS3 so I can play Ridge Racer 07 and F1 and GTHD!!!!!!!!!!!

Britney's Bald Dome
Isamu what about your ultimate setup?

Ok, I know you're excited and all but please don't run around like a beheaded chicken.

Why should RR7 be crap ? It's Ridge Racer, some like it, others don't. Nevertheless the game runs smoothly on 1080P, it's fast, great gameplay...

So...NO, RR7 isn't crap, Rawgee and Ebiggs simply don't like it ;)

As for the (possible?) addition of rumble... better late than never.
Imo Immerson thought that they can dictate the prices, because Sony HAS to buy their technology.
Sony didn't, and now Sony says how much they'll pay...
Probably quite smart from a busniness point of view. I really missed the rumble feature, especially in racing and fighting games... in ego shooters as well... I'd say it's a feature a pad has to have. At least as an option...

Yippeee! looks like rumble is heading back over to PS!

That means it will now have wireless, tilt and rumble, WHAT A SUPER CONTROLLER!

Im sure for existing games there would be some kind of patch and now games that are being developed will surely include rumble support!

Maybe whislt they are adding rumble to the sixaxis they can do something to make it look better! Oh and maybe increase the battery life to deal with rumble and add back the PS button led!

Only con is that the controller will probably weigh quite abit again but the weight of the DS2 never really bothered me......

Cant wait to see what comes of this news, maybe Sony wont do anything with it for a while!

Is it not possible that the current Sixaxis controller actually does have the hardware already?? (or is that just wishful thinking??) If I were Sony, I would have made the current controllers with the hardware already there, but just disabled it via software until such a time as Sony were allowed to use the technology again... shame for those of us who have already ordered our PS3's though, means we're going to have to fork out again for a new controller :(

I don't think it does. It's too light. Also, SL opened his Sixaxis and I didn't see any rotors in it.

I think he may have meant that the chips on the PCB in the controller and all the required motor soldering points are there aswell as rumble being coded into the games... all they may need to do it solder in the motors, activate the software and hardware and they are good to go...... either that or we will see a totally new controller.

👍 Thanks Daan.

Sorry Moose, I didn't see your thread before posting. :dunce:
(I did search, but I think because you spelled "Immersion" wrong in the thread title it didn't come up in a title search?)

I'm thinking it will have to be a new controller. For me at least, rumble was a nice feature to have in a few games, especially the Silent Hill, NFL 2K, and of course GT series of games, but I can still live without it until replacing my controllers. I also have a G25 wheel, and would have been OK without FF as well... but glad to see that wont likely be an issue any longer. 👍
