0-60 1 sec. is this possible??

Obviously the VSS is whacked. You can her the shift into 2nd at (indicated) 80ish mph with plenty of squeaky low-speed wheelspin.

I'm guessing it's indicating at least 4x the real speed.

I've not watched the video, but I imagine the speed sensor for the speedometer is hooked up to the driven wheels (i.e. the wheels are spinning at 60mph but the car isn't actually moving anywhere near thar).

For a car that takes 13 secs to get to 120mph, 0-60 in 1 sec is next to impossible.

Hard to tell from that angle, but definitely didn't hit 60 in a second. Perhaps around 60 km/h in a second or so. Looks like it's still a fairly fast car though.

As for it being possible to hit 60mph in a second, sure it is. Our drag car hit's 60 mph in about 1.8 seconds and it's a 9 second 1/4 mile car. Faster cars hit 60 even faster.

Top fuel guys hit 100 mph in less than a second and over 300 mph in 4 seconds.

And Sammy Miller hit 396mph in 3.58 secs (IIRC).

He could also be on ice or on jacks like mentioned above. Definetly not that fast. Also if he has an electronic speedo and its not set right it will jump up instantly. He could also take off from ice getting the tires to spin instantly then hit the dry road burning the tires at a high rpm. Since its front wheel drive, he could put his parking brake on and it would do the same thing if he revved it that high and dumped the clutch. If its that fast lets see outside the window videos.
When I first installed my electronic Autometer 5" speedo it wasnt calibrated and the speedo would jump to 85 just by putting it in gear. I could do 0-160 in 1 second!

Now its calibrated and works exactly how its supposed to.

drag snowmobiles can go 0-60mph in 1 sec on snow! i watched when jeremy clarskon went to Norway and tried all of these wacky machines like a tractor that floats so when it goes across a lake, when the ice breaks it won't sink!

That'd be rocket powered, not wheel driven.

Those things were nuts.

Phenomenal times of 0-60 mph in 0.2 seconds and 0-100 mph in 0.3 seconds were normal for rocket cars.I believe the engine he used in "Vanishing Point" was the same type used by NASA in the lunar module. He had to lie almost flat on his back in the car; otherwise, the incredible acceleration would have caused him to black out. He said that every time he raced the car his nose and ears bled.

Yep, something like 7g acceleration. He was interviewed by Performance Car magazine back in 1994 and he said the aceleration was comparable to sitting in a Mini and being hit by an articulated lorry travelling at 50mph. He was also temporarily blinded after one run.

That Supra is sick--I wonder what it would feel like to go that fast...

Um...a couple things:

1. No, he isn't moving that fast, that's wheelspin.

2. No, his speedometer isn't broken or goofy -- it's common for a speedometer to be hooked up to the car's differential, meaning the speedometer is tied to the speed that the transmission/drivetrain is rotating at. (I would say that all cars do this, but I'm not 100% positive)

Oh for god's sake. I'm right and you're all wrong, and here's why;

That video... it's shot at a dragstrip, and I can't believe no one picked up on that.

The first time you see the tach move, you can hear him lift the handbrake. Burnout, baby! He did a 2nd gear burnout, that's why the speed seems to climb so quickly, but he's in fact not moving. Doing a 2nd gear burnout will make the transmission spin faster than a first gear burnout. It'll heat up the tires more quickly in the process, too. Now, you'll notice he sits there a few seconds before the speedo and tach move again. Staging, then launch. Notice the speedo doesn't climb quite as rapidly the second time around, and that he's clearly fighting wheelspin, because both needles go up and down. Wheelspin will affect the way the speedometer climbs. Judging from the runtime of the video that's at least a high 12 second pass, so we're talking about 230whp on slicks, probably more.

And there you have it.

ouch...id have to agree with PunkRock.

i was thinking that but wasnt sure how to put it man.

also, a scram jet works above mach 3 i think which is about 2300mph...so you better get a good head start if you wanna use a scram jet :)

I've not watched the movie but in the case if this is on a dyno then there's no inertia involved so it's quite easy for the speedo to jump that quickly.

You are right. I knew he was spining in something and I even mentioned that in my post above. :sly:
