1.20 Update was a complete missed opportunity

They really went ahead and added an F1 car and couldve made a menu book of it with 3 events, or an F1 Championship. But no, only 4 events that take 30 minutes at the most to complete. 1 of which is a sunday cup. Wheres the F1 events??? And STILL we lack any sort of meaningful Gr.1 race that pays well, ANY sort of Gr.2 race and only 3 manufacturer races (Porsche, Ferrari and Nissan). Why is Le Mans so under-used? For goodness sakes Monza only has one event thats not even worth racing!!!

But then they added a Gr.2 Extra Menu book and didnt make a single race out of it??? Come on PD, we need interesting races. You can do it, just look at the neoclassics and hypercar menu books. They were a blast.

People regularly use the "I'd like to see you do better" cliche retort when you criticise something but you know what, I don't see how I couldn't do better given all the same content and resources. At an absolute minimum I'd have 10+ races on every single track variation, with at least 20 that pay out the maximum rate of credits.

They don't even have to add new events.

Just make a bunch of custom race presets and get rid of the way custom race plays out (where being in the top 3 is almost automatic). That's even LESS work than new events and they can be used on all tracks.


GT7 is the self serve checkout of the video game industry. "Do you want to play a fun racing game? Here's some cars and tracks. Go spend the next five years trying to buy the best cars and then go work on making your own events for them."

So, now, it's six months in. Can the holdouts finally concede that this is not going to get any better? This is the pattern for the foreseeable future, until they decide to move on to the next version (next name change really, there is barely enough updated to call it a version).

100% - They've shown us the tools for making the events exist. They just leave it to us to do it ourselves. Fine, then give us the control over the AI and give us the ability to share custom race set ups, same goes for lobbies...bring back the fine control of GT5. If their intention is to leave game design to the community, they could at least give us the proper tools.

All the more reason GT7 is collecting dust since I've moved to ACC for the foreseeable future. I've been a fan of GT games since inception, and always had a bias for it, but GT7 has disappointed on so many fronts. With so many issues, lack of promised content, and failed expectations that have gone unresolved with no real sense of urgency to fix, I can't excuse them just because its pretty anymore. The fact is no matter how nicely you polish a 💩, it's still a 💩.

My god, this and the reply to this comment are spot on. This would have been a timeless game if they provided players with the resources. The only strong part of the "creativity" aspect of GT7 is tuning, Customisation and scapes, not the racing itself.

Would love to make my own 1-Lap magic missions, just like this guy called "GTRufus" does for GT4, or make my own championships with proper AI, since we have AI that dont even press the throttle 100%. Intergrate tuning sheets and livery selections within settings of custom races.

And lets not bother with the obvious selling cars and 2 player splitscreen issues that many players have been complaining about.

I Agree. Just make them use 100 percent throttle already. No reason that my stock Subaru should be able to catch up with the likes of a Ferrari Tributo or a Lamborghini Huracan on the straights.

But sadly AI has never been a priority for PD. And this new 'Sophy' AI? I don't see that being implemented in the foreseeable future, and if I am to be so bold I really hope it doesn't come. That AI model is too refined in the sense that the AI cars drive at unrealistic speeds and have little spatial awareness. We need AI that drive at human speeds and are more aware of track surroundings, not some robotic static AI that is ultra precise going around a turn. It's all about making an AI that is engaging to the player and carries a sense of belief, one that is fun to race against essentially, and from the looks of it GT Sophy is none of those.

And music rally. Kaz should retire. Sort of odd how well know he is. He has been making the same video game for decades now and has brought very little innovation to the title since it’s inception many decades ago.

I’ve mentioned it. Others have mentioned it. Kaz even mentioned it. He forgot about the older games. He‘s trying to make it nostalgic and still messed that up. Didn’t even copy & paste all the events from past games.
I mean, if I boot up GTPSP and remember correctly. I can choose Nurburgring Nordschleife. Select number of laps and it scales 1,000,000 Cr. Over 2 or 3 laps.

Exactly. I always said it’s like scale models, r/c cars and slotcar racing. Just give us the tools and we’ll take care of the rest. Seriously.
 
i never bitched about the updates, but the extra menus collect 3 cars for a ticket after a month it's nonsense, they could add them weekly, most games do similar things daily/weekly, probably most of the staff was on holidays this month.
 
I've been thinking about a "missed opportunity" post, too. The campaign mode of GT7 lacks any imagination, and I can't believe the CAFE is what everybody at PD thought was a good idea.

GT7, with the livery editor AND engine swaps AND dynamic TOD/weather, had an opportunity to make the "rags to riches" motif of earlier GTs a genuinely immersive game, with all kinds of re-playability. Allow me to illustrate:

You'd start by selecting a nationality and then you get to choose a low PP car to start based on Nationality.
You'd race clubman races to start, earn money and buy parts to improve your car.
Based on the parts you buy, you'd earn sponsorships/decals for your livery.
As your money increased you could hire a mechanic who could guide you through tuning.
Get to certain level with your car (say 600PP) and you race a championship to unlock an engine swap and then move up to the next tier of racing (something like GR.4).
Race more, unlock more, and progress to the good ole GT World Championship.
Once you win the Championship you unlock B-spec where you can manage your car(s), hire drivers, buy additional race cars, attract additional sponsors, et c., and maybe progress to managing a team for an actual 24h event at Le Mans or Daytona or Spa.
Then, the whole things starts over, except now everything is unlocked.

When i am head of PD i'll show Kaz how it's done ;-)

Anyhow, I don't know what's wrong with the folks over at PD. I've been binge watching Tsunami videos lately, and but so, everybody in Japan gets a pass/do-over on anything they want after watching that stuff. That said, it's a shame that PD couldn't dream up something more immersive than talking to people in a cafe about cars. This game offers so much potential and PD don't capitalize on any of it. I mean, except the fomo/mtx part. So weird, so disappointing, especially considering it's the 25th anniversary, and considering how long it's been since GT6.

We don't know if they'll add it later or not. Keep in mind that Gr.1 cars were in GT7 from launch, and it took a while to get an event based on them.

That said, I'd totally be down for an event either based on the new MP4/4, the F1500T-A, or one of the Red Bull cars. Especially if Silverstone returns...

EDIT: We still don't have an event for Gr.2 cars, either, though an Extra Menu based on the 2016 GT500 cars is nice.

Hot take: there's not much need for Special Stage Route 5/7/11 with Tokyo Expressway being a thing. Especially if the latter gets wet weather conditions for the south variant, as well as North and West circuits.

As for other GT-original circuits, I do hope at least some return, namely Apricot Hill and Grand Valley. The former is especially fine just as it is, and I see no need to modify it like with Trial Mountain.

More city circuits to join Tokyo would be great, too. I know this idea may be a dream, but I'd love a modernized version of the Manhattan circuit seen in GT4.

The problem with Expressway is that the layouts aren't the most fun to drive on, Special Stage Route 5 and 11 had better flow to them than the Expressway tracks. The same could be said for Tokyo R246.

100% agree, the old special stages would be great to drive on in GT7, but I think he's on about how PD chucked in this Tokyo set of expressway tracks as an 'alternative' and has taken the seat of our beloved special stages.

What's weird to me is that we have Special Stage Route X still. What's even more weird than that is the fact PD made it located in the U.S. despite the track's measurement system being in metric and not the imperial system used in the U.S.

It's clear that the Tokyo Expressway tracks are meant to be a replacement for the SSR tracks though, excluding the aforementioned X. One of the Expressway layouts, I forget which one exactly, even has the death chicane that SSR11 had in GT1. SSRX is kind of an oddball and really only there to fill the void of the test track from the older games, not unlike how the Blue Moon Bay oval is meant to be as a modern replacement of the oval track in GT3.

Honestly I wish they'd just bring back more of the classic tracks, but I think this whole concept of remaking the tracks from scratch because kerbs are too wide is just stupid because in the process of doing that they end up butchering the layouts and feel the tracks originally had. Trial Mountain's lacking the sweeping canopy trees, the straight is way too long, and that chicane at the end doesn't flow very well. Deep Forest was butchered as well, with the ridiculous sharp left hander after the long tunnel. Who thought that was a good idea? It completely ruined the flow of the track. Who wants to come to a crawl after going down a fast straight? The track should have a layout that sweeps up and around like the original.
 
Yep, I'd rather have the old SSR tracks than Tokyo. Route 11 had a lot of tight corners in it then the one high speed section. That's only if I have to choose. Can we have them all?
Trial Mountain and Deep Forest do feel different; they're easier IMO. I haven't played since GT4 though. It felt like they were repeating the same stuff, and the lack of tuning in GT Mobile was a kick in the face. I finally bought Mobile but haven't played it yet.
BTW the original Trial Mountain didn't have the final chicane, it was merely a suggestion of which path to take. :)

I believe I have said before (in another thread) exactly what you put about trial mountain and deep forest. Trial mountain without that last chicane has essentially taken out the track's soul, and Deep forest with the new hairpin feels like a tumour on the track.

SSRX is the test track I've always wanted for top speed runs and that's it's limit. It shouldn't be a 'special stage' at all imo and definitely not something to go 'racing' on.

The bigger question is if they bring back more original tracks, will they be like we want them? Or destroyed with what used to make the old tracks great taken out? I don't know how they can mess up Grand Valley or Apricot hill or Red rock valley, but I feel that they'll (intentionally or not) end up doing so.

My little hope left is, that after 5 years of development and the upcoming summer a lot of the people at PD probably deserved a big holiday after the release. Hope in Autumn many of them are back with new motivation for greater updates.

It seems to me that all the cars that we received in the updates now were already created for GTSport but they postponed them for GT7.
So, either they don't do anything now because it was already created in advance long time ago, they just release them slowly and gradually, or there are only a few people working on it and that's why there is so little new content.
