Just when I was thinking it was completely impossible for this event to actually be fun. I managed to stumble into a linup that actually makes this event entertaining.

the lineup:
lineup.jpg

its *only* worth 100 A-Spec points (nice round number eh?)
but, i've stopped chasing those... I'm not going for "the most points possible" anymore.. i'm going for "the most fun possible".
that being said... this ranked up on my list of the most fun races i've actually had since i got the game.

I managed to achieve what i think this event was designed for, honest nostalgia... After about an hour of C1 vs C2 fighting on "the ring" i started to get that feeling of motoring nostalgia i used to get tooling around in the 356's playing NFS: Porsche unleashed. Where even though your driving the car as fast as it can go, getting as much grip as the car can give, with another opponent breathing down your neck the whole way... it just feels like a pleasent sunday drive in the country. Puts a smile on my face. =]

The race itself went like this:
I ended up beating the C2 by just over 7 seconds.
However, I was really disapointed with the performance of the gullwing... he finished on the lead lap, but I looked at him in the replay and he was dumping ~18seconds / lap... so that puts him at almost 8min down after 25... shame, i was really hoping for a 3-way.
Allthough the C1 vs C2 was quite a nice fight. The C2 excels at anything thats involves going up a hill or in a straight line... where the C1 eats him whenever turning the steering wheel is required.
I didn't even need to be cheap and do any blocking... The C1 can walk away from the C2 in the begining twisty section... but then the C2 will gain 5 seconds on the up hill climb of high speed corners before the carrosell, and be filling your mirror again as your taking the first sharp turn at the end of that long stretch.
Then you have to make up as much time as possible through the ensuing twisty part, because he'll eat up another 7 seconds on the home straight. A few times he would actually pass me, then i'd take the lead back on the final turn before the start/finish line.
Its was more of a dance than a race. which really helped capture that easy going feeling. =]

The only real "problem" is that the AI is pretty stupid with his pit strategy... so you have to make your tires last 5 laps.
After four laps i knew we only had enough rubber left for 1/3 of a lap... but he's too dumb to think that far ahead, but its no biggie... because his tires suck just as bad so both of us were ~20 seconds off pace nursing red tires every 5th lap.

All-in-all ... good honest fun.

The settings I used for the vette are:
Totally stock horsepower... not even an oil change.

.......... (f / r)
Tires: S1 / S1

springs: 8.0 / 7.6
ride: 112 / 112
bound: 3 / 6
rebound: 3 / 6
camber: 2.6 / 1.2
toe: 0 / 0
stabilizers: 1 / 3

*note* yes the shock bound and rebound look strange... that was a mistake on my part when i was punching them in.... i wanted 3 / 3, 6 / 6 ... but somehow i transposed them, but i drove 25 laps like that and the car felt perfect... so it seemed to work out. *

brakes: 7 / 5

ballast weight: 200
ballance f/r: +5

LSD initial: 5
LSD accel: 50
LSD deccel: 10

Gears:
1: 2.806
2: 1.877
3: 1.350
4: 1.021
5: 0.821
Final: 3.400

*note* don't drive with an AT, this is one of those cars you have to drive as a manual, or you will get frustrated with its acceleration. If you look at it in the garage, you can see that it peaks @ 4200. looking at the power graph you can see that it falls off really sharply after that... when you're driving it, you can see that; the car will basically stop accellerating at 4400 and beg you to shift it. when you do, it starts gaining speed rapidly again.
However the tach in GT4, goes up to ~4800 before the shift light turns on, so the AT will be too stupid to shift early and things will get frustrating fast.
so, use a manual and shift @ 4250, then everything is happy. *

------ Best lap: 8:57.012

happy motoring.

Cool. Sounds like you had a really good time. I ended up B-Speccing 1000 Miles a long time ago, but I might go back and try it out myself.

*update*... after running the next two races in the series... (paris and monaco) this formula only seems to yield good fun on the nordschleife. paris was a +7 lap slaughter.

La Sarthe will be a massacre... :D

If you're looking for a good close race that's actually kind of hard, take on the Opel Speedster challenge.

I've seen posted elsewhere that a lot of people thought this was the hardest thing they've had to face, and so far, I agree.

It's an absolute blast though, and that Opel is just a joy to drive.

I had a bit of fun with an Alfa GTA vs. the 300SL and Lotus Elan in the Monaco event of 1000 Miles!, and the Datsun Fairlady 2000 thing (the '67 convertible that pops up in the '80s used section occasionally) at Opera against an E-type. Both cars make these tight and cramped circuits actually quite enjoyable, and though they won comfortably (not withstanding the fact that my 100% standard but with oil change Datsun got it's but kicked by a Cobra) but it did lead me to believe that the slightly slower GTA might be a nice match against the E-type at Opera. Also had some fun with the Spider Duetto against a GTA and Isuzu 117 at Le Sarthe in the same series.

werd... got totally owned, to the tune of 20 seconds per lap.
i'll have to re-race that in something that can actually get down the straights... not enough turns on la sarthe for good handling slow car to be a factor.
good thing i didn't need the points from that race to still get 1st in the series.

I lengthened the 5th gear ratio on my C1 for La Sarthe (I was doing a family cup), with autoset a bit higher than stock. Instead of topping out at, what is it, 170km/h, the gear is a bit too long for the car to reach its max speed on the straight. Simple - no more problems!

with ballast @ 200 and stock hp it tops out at ~125mph
the c2 and gullwing were doing near 140mph IIRC.
pretty unbeatable.
I drafted it up into the 130's behind the gullwing and when he was done walking away and the wind came back the car slowed back down... pretty sure i was hitting the aerodynamically limited top speed of the car.
poor thing.
perhaps without the dead hooker in the trunk it would be different... but i'll give it another go some other time... maybe in one of those cute old hondas or something.

ok, now i feel stupid - is it just me or does Alfaholics sig STILL not make sense. Maybe the "Ahhh..." just hasn't happened for me yet - (it is friday arvo here). What's a morphosis?

I never Met a Beer I didn't like
I never Met a Morphosis I didn't like
I never metamorphosis I didn't like

Does that help?

<edit>

Wait, I missed part of your post - I have no idea what a morphosis is seperately, it's a nice play on words though if you ask me. ;)

I wish I could claim credit for "my sig" but I first saw it in an '80s relic magazine called Sinclair User. It was right after a line that read "If Reagan is telling the truth, why do they keep cutting bits off his nose?" The fact that I can still remember these lines at least 25 years after first reading the magazine shows how funny I found them and how sad I am :)

For those of you too young to remember, Ronald Reagan was president of the USA in the '80s and he had some kind of cancer issue which I believed involved some tumourous growths on his nose...

For the record, I don't have a clue what a morphosis is, but it makes me think of that little clay guy called Morph, who used to appear in an art show called Take Hart or something. :)

Aww, bummer - was hoping there might be more to it than that. Still, I think it's pretty clever...and I'd forgotten abou the cancer in his nose, but I remember Reagan - I even remember the day he was shot...too bad he couldn't have much of a public life after his Presidency, I think we could've used him....

I was an ass when I started it. I took my Jaguar E-type :ouch: and now I beat the opponents (Elan S1, 300SL etc.) with like 3 to 5 laps on every race. But it's so much fun driving right behind the S1 with 4th gear in the speed of something like 60kmh and then quickly dropping the gear to 2nd and pressing the gas and flying past the S1. It's allways fun and makes me smile. :)

TOTALLY Off topic, but I love ur signature Alfaholic - 1st time I saw it took me just about ---> <--- that long to go what? and then I went Ahhhh, that's very clever...

i like how this forum lets you disable sigs... i hate looking at those silly things.
very few people put anything interesting in them anyway. *shrug* guess this is one of those rare times i actually miss something interesting.

oh, and fyi.... metamorphosis is a change in apperance, morphosis is the process by which that change occurs... thats the play on words going on.

Oh dear... that means my sig is saying that I never met a change process I didn't like! ummmmmmm now I'll have to think of something better.

having fun wathing my B-spec'd Mercury Cougar XR-7 '67 eat up it's tires every 3-4 laps round the nurb....

can't wait to run another 25 laps with another muscle car :D
