Since my monitor supports only 720p, that's the setting I play with and the shadows in my cockpit are crisp. Do you guys think it's from being in 720p? The exterior shadows are still bad but I never get the nasty shadows we see in youtube vids inside the cockpit.

Intersecting... I will definetly have to try setting my ps3 to only 720p and seeing the difference. I will definetly report back. Wonder if it helps with the antialising issue...

do you get the low polygons around the cars edge with smoke and spray?

I get that. Happens around smoke and water spray as you mentioned. I'm running in 720p because my TV isnt 1080p. 1080i looks even more terrible.

Also noticed the water effect on the window is pretty bad, all squarish.

I would have thought that the reason for the lower quality on smoke and water spray effects are bacause of the processing power required for these transparent visuals.

The same goes for the shadows... By making them a lower quality it can free up power which is needed somewhere else.

If there were options to adjust effects in the game menu I would adjust it to keep it running at 60 fps and have lower quality visuals.

Take a look for Indy 500 on the Amiga from about 20 years ago on YouTube. I spent hours and hours on that game and there were 3 settings for the grafix. Picking the one with the highest frame rate made the game more enjoyable, not the more detail and low frame rate. Low frame rates of less than 10fps were common with a little action on the screen.

did you try it? according to the GT5 tech analysis by Eurogamer, 1080i/p runs @ only 2x QAA while 720p runs @ 4xMSAA.. Unfortunately i'm traveling this week so i'cant test it out/play :(

EDIT: After taking pictures to make a direct comparison, it was all in my head, there is no differance. Im an idiot

i didnt think gt5 would render/process in 720p i assumed it would render in 1080p and the ps3 would bring that down to 720p to output to the tv(i know render is probably the wrong word)

kinda suprised by that

The edges in my opinion are awful as well. I dont know if its because I have a 60Hz but I have a 37" LG 1080 and the edges on most shots are very rough and not smooth :(
