I'm suprised the TVR V12 got nominated, let alone 5 votes, as much as I love the car and the engine, the time it takes to start it up a lone in my mind prevents it from being a potential best. Since the Audi i5 has been nominated I'll nominate the VW V5.

I voted for the VAG W16, it's an achievemnt in tecnology to create an engine pushing thoes numbers and at the same time be smooth and reliable.

I nominate the Honda Vee 5 (3 cyl on one side, 2 on the other) from the RC211V GP bike. "Over" 240 hp from 990 cc and a truly unique design!

I hereby nominate the Mercedes-Benz OM617 Diesel engine.
The Inline-5 Turbo Diesel was not particularly powerful (125hp, 170 lb-ft), but is well known for its' longevity. 400,000 - 500,000 Miles is not uncommon with these engines, with it being entirely possible to, with proper care, last much longer. They are quite reliable, and rev fairly high for a 1970's era diesel engine (Think 4500+ RPM). Interestingly, it was the first turbodiesel engine used in a regular production sedan, in 1978.

 
I voted Bugatti's W16.

I nominate M-B 3l straight-8 from M-B 300 SLR that did run Mille Miglia in 1955, and produced respectable 290 bhp.
 
We're not nominating 8 cylinde engines, we've already done thoes, we're nominating engines with an odd number of cylinders.
 
It's odd as in odd numbers, we've already had a thread for 8 cylinder engines your inline 8 nomination should have gone in that one. This is for all the inbetweens, 3 cylinder, 5 cylinder ect.
 
Agreed. besides, there's also the Buick Fireball eight, and a number of other straight-Eight engines that are mostly Pre-1950s. considering the era, that engine's not that unusual.
