Several times now I have been in the middle of the pack on the second lap on the Nurburgring and the first or first two cars will cross the finish line before the time limit runs out. Why does the game make the current second lap the last lap. Why is there no third lap? The ones who cross are still racing but everyone else is done and the times are clearly messed up because everyone gets -256 hours something ... when comparing their times to first place time.

It is supposed to be the leader who sets the last lap after the time runs out, correct?

I'm still running less powerful cars so I can't check what would happen if I crossed the finish line before the time ran out.

No, in races like Le Mans the race ends as the first car finishes the race after the time limit as elapsed, regardless of their position. Some series' use x amount of time +1 lap so the checkered flag only comes out for the leader (I think FIA GT might be one of those).

So you are saying that if two cars are in their third lap and everyone else is in their second lap (when the time limit is reached): the two at the front will fight for first and second place in the third lap but everyone else will only fight for third in the second lap?

Essentially yes, as soon as the clock hits 0 the cars only have to finish their lap, whether that means they have to do 1 more metre to finish or almost an entire lap. It's kind of the same situation as the end of Formula One qualifying sessions.

Thanks. At least in losing I've learned something new. So I guess PD hasn't been able to program the outcomes very well because the game doesn't let the AI finish their lap when they are ahead.

In real life racing the winner is the car the travels the furthest in the set amount of time rounded up to the next lap.
