Welcome to the 1970 World Sportscar Championship simulation on Project Cars 2.

I’m a bit infatuated with the vintage car and track packs in PC2 so I wanted to try and recreate the entire 1970 season the best way I can.

I’m going to run each event as closely to the actual calendar dates the races were run in 1970 simulating the weather, cars and tracks. This will take me until October when the final championship race at Österreichring took place. Thanks to some help and advice from several GTPlanet forum members I have decided to substitute a few tracks where a few are missing.

I’m not crazy, so the length and/or distance of races will be shortened to 20% of the original with time progression set at 5x:

  • 24 hours = 4.8 hours
  • 12 hours = 2.4 hours
  • 6 hours = 1.2 hours
  • 1000km = 200km
I will have an AI assist with codriving on the 24 hour races.

The tricky event is Targa Florio which was 44 laps in real life on the 71km Circuit delle Madonie, so instead will be run on Bannochbrae at 20% length or approximately 22 laps.

Sebring will be substituted at Silverstone classic, and Österreichring at Hockenheim classic.

Cars will be mainly Vintage Prototype A and Vintage GTA. Though not entirely accurate to real life due to game limitations, at Nürburgring and Targa Florio where Porsche ran the 908 and Ferrari the 512S, Vintage Prototype B will replace VPTA. I have decided to omit Vintage GTB class, though I may ultimately change my mind. Brands Hatch will be limited to VPTA as in real life.

The scoring will be based on the real life system, so the championship will likely be down to Porsche and Ferrrari for the overall points victory. I have opted to race for Porsche.

Here’s a link to the actual results, so it will be interesting to see the outcome.

24 Hours of Daytona

January 31 & February 1

Porsche swept the first six places pushing Ferrari out of the points. The highest placed Ferrari was 7th.

After round 1 Porsche has 9 points, Ferrari 0.

12 Hours of Sebring

March 21

I personally started out P2, led half the race until pit stop gaffes with a driver swap put me behind. Also had one encounter with a back marker late in the race which forced a pit for repair. No live stream video, but I may update a shortened trackside replay eventually.

Standings after round 2:

Porsche 18, Ferrari 2

BOAC 1000km

April 12

Personally was dreading this event with the wet conditions, but aside from a few spins I didn’t fare too badly. Started 9th, caught up to the leaders, made a few mistakes, finished 8th. Could have been better.

No surprise, Porsche dominated again kicking Ferrari out of the points.

Porsche 27, Ferrari 2.

1000km of Monza

April 25

This race was a breeze. Seemed kind of short, but pretty sure my math is correct on the number of laps and distance to be 1/5 the actual length of 1000km.

Got pole, dropped to third at the start and recovered P1 by lap 3. Never looked back even with a spin going into Retiffilo centro halfway through the race. If you clip a curb anywhere you’re in trouble.

After this round Ferrari picked up some points, but it’s looking grim. Porsche is close to clinching the Championship.

Porsche 36, Ferrari 5.

Another Porsche romp. No Vintage Prototype A in this race, only Prototype B, and Vintage GTA, B, and C.

Ford and Lotus pick up some points.

Porsche 45, Ferrari 9, Ford 6, Lotus 3.

1000km of Spa

Challenging circuit, especially in wet conditions. Light rain at the start with gradual clearing through the race. Started 4th but spun on my second time through Eau Rouge. Lost a spot, but damage limited my ability to make up any time on the leaders.

Things went relatively well through my first pits for fuel until I ran over one of those roadside signposts the AI love to run over and spray all over the track around lap 11 of 15. Lost more time in the pits with the unscheduled pit stop for repair and wound up a lap down. Finished 10th just as I was about to get my lap back from P2. Overall my best lap times were competitive for a podium but things didn’t work out. All in all a great circuit and one of my favorites in all of sim racing.

Porsche gets the overall win and clinches the championship.

Porsche 54, Ferrari 12, Ford 6, Lotus 3.

Abbreviated video with my Eau Rouge error to be uploaded later.

1000km of Nürburgring

Challenging track, easy win. Started pole, led the entire race and won easily. Helps when the game made me the only Porsche in the Prototype category. No VPTA, only VPTB since Porsche didn’t run the 917 at Nürburgring.

Updated standings:

Porsche - 63 (clinched championship)
Ferrari - 18
Ford - 10
Lotus - 4

Nice thread!! Unfortunately I do not have vintage pack :( but the idea is great! Good Luck!

Use the Ford MK4 and Ferrari 330 P4 instead and replicate the 1967 season! You can also pick the 1967 (Road G) Mustang and run multi-class with Vintage Proto B. This is very exciting at night at Le Mans and Daytona where the Prototypes will pass you at much greater speed.

Try also the Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB4 (Class GTA) and run multi-class with Vintage Proto A for a very exciting and authentic feeling season. Anyone with the Porsche 911 can use this instead of the Ferrari and you will have a great race trying to catch / stay with the faster Ferraris. This combination is very exciting at Daytona.

Nice idea @cjr3559 - I have run both the 1967 and 1970/1 seasons as multi-class online championships and they worked out great!

I’ve really fallen behind on this series. Round 2 has been updated.

Now that I’m into the meat of the schedule I will try and update this weekly, though it looks like Porsche will be running away with the Championship.

Targa Florio updated. Won’t be able to resume this for several more weeks due to out of town commitments.
