Guys. His dad knows the guy and probably trusts him, I doubt he would be offering to buy this thing if it was falling apart, and chances are the guy making him a better deal than he would otherwise sell it to someone on the street for.

Also, his dad is asking him if he wants it, knowing full well that it's going to need some work. It's not like his dad is completely ignorant about cars and this guy is just diving into this thing headfirst because it's awd and turbo.

I say do it, you'll never come across a deal this good again.

Edit: When I posted this it was after a short talk with my dad.

The guy that own's it is not a mechanic he is my dads co worker.

They are EXTREMELY good friends and the car is in MINT condition, apart from the engine.

The interior is nice, the outside/rockers etc. rust free.

The only problem is the engine is running a bit rough and either needs some work, or a new engine.

They don't know what the problem is.

It is an Alltrac turbo apparently.

4WD + Turbo

I may just stay away from this and buy a Bimmer.

If everything you say is true and it is just running rough i'd buy it in a heartbeat and worst case scenario you gotta replace the engine. Right? Obviously look at the car and it is still running so take it for a test drive. As long as you get it into a reliable state I think it would make a great first car. The ST185 All-Trac is my favorite Celica of all time. I've only driven one with a BHG but it still felt cool as hell.

When I was 16 I went to one of those wrecker actions. There was a Red 91 or 92 All-Trac with 75,000 miles on it. Front passenger damage, fender, wheel, suspension bits. Perfect leather interior, the good sound system and all that jazz. Even had a T.E.M.S switch in the center console, which as far as I know wasn't even available on the all-trac here in the US or any for that matter. The thing was so badass and I wanted it pretty badly. Sold for like 700 bucks, guy said he just bought it for the seats. :/ To this day I wish I had the money to bid on it.
