1st or 3rd person?

Hi, I don't have a PS2 yet.
I was wondering what perspective most of you prefer - 1st or 3rd? From what I can tell, the 3rd person might be easier to drive.

Also, I was just wondering whether, in the 3rd person, is it possible to rise the camera a little so I can see slightly more down onto the car? In the screenshots of 3rd person, they seem a little bit too low and can't see what's directly in front of the car.

There's been quite a few threads on this, so I'd suggest doing a search.

And no - the cameras are fixed.

Funny. I don't see many real-life races where the driver is strapped in so his eyes are in contact with the front splitter...
 
No. But almost all the karts or Formula Fords I've seen have the driver sitting between the front and rear axle in a seated position, not bound head down with his eyes being the furthest forward point of the vehicle...
 
Well if you do have the opportunity to drive a formula car or even a race spec MX5 like I do, you'd realise that this is a much more realistic experience than that of an eagle floating behind your car...how many out of body experiences do you have dude?

That's got to be one interesting "race spec MX-5"... Did you remove the entire cabin as a weight-saver, since you obviously don't inhabit it during a race.

How much strapping do you have on your chin to protect yourself? If your eyes are an inch off the tarmac... Wow... I guess you've got to wear a full face helmet too, otherwise the bugs and stone chippings might sandblast you.
 
I like the 3rd person view better, but it was better in GT2. The 1st person view is much to low to be real and in real racing you aim with the front tires or a hood like it is a rear sight on a gun.

Well, at least that's what I do.:D

I wasn't doubting your opinion that 1st person is "better" - I know a few hundred people who agree. And for that matter I haven't actually said which view I prefer.

I was pointing out that real cars do not have the driver strapped to the front bumper - both views are "unrealistic" (whatever that is in a computer game), with neither being less or more realistic than the other.

Unless you believe THIS is normal:

I added a second helmet in the interest of unbiased coverage, BTW. I'd say it's the difference between a low-flying chopper and a Skeleton bobsleigh - which is still not much of a choice. Now if they did an in-car, there'd be no debate... :D

Out of interest (and not making attacks here - genuine interest), what know ye of "Up North"?

But, seriously, I don't see anybody suggesting that an in-car view where half the screen is taken up by the hood would be preferable to GT3's 1st-person view. Your POV sitting in front of a TV is bad enough as it is.

Personally, I always use 1st person. 3rd person is just weird. It's somewhat useful to switch to 3rd person if you need to block a faster car on a long straightaway because you can see around your car really well, but that's almost cheating.

1st person to me is fairly weird - with no peripheral vision (and of course the lack of any tactile senses, but it is, after all, a computer game) I feel I'm never entirely sure what the back of the car is doing. 3rd person is alos weird, I agree, but at least I know what the car wants to do :D

Both views have serious racing-drawbacks too - in 3rd person you often can't see the track in front of you (and some cars block the view totally - like the Bugs). In 3rd person you often can't see the car in front of the car in front (and it's possible to nose-to-tail them so you can see inside the body of the car...). :D

You can't call either "realistic", and certainly not in a comparative sense either... :D

I agree with Famine on the views in GT3. Neither of them are realistic, because the driver's view looks more like a bumper cam view, and in real life, driver's don't see from behind the car!
 
First person. In GT2 I couldn't do it and used chase view. As soon as I started playing GT3 I couldn't do chase view and did much better with first person.
 
I prefer 1st person myself, because you can hear the engine better. And I like it being realistic as being in the car and not flying outside of it.
 
But it isn't "in the car" - it's attached to the front bumper at best.
 
It's not actually attached to the car, it's exactley the same heigh off the ground on every car and with them having different bumper shaps, sizes and heights it would'nt be attached to that, itry liing the car up with one of the grid markers and see if you can find out where it is.
 
I don't wanna recommend or condone anything here, just hypothetically conjecturing that perhaps the 1st person PoV is a little more stoney than the tertiary alternate. Is it not so?
