Ask yourself: How would Bill Burroughs drive?

Apart from the fact I don't know who Bill Burroughs is, there is no part of this post that I don't like.

:D

I prefer first person....for some odd reason, I don't seem to be able to react to a car's motion until it's too late in 3rd person....

like, I ALWAYS oversteer like crazy in 3rd person mode...=P

Too race good, i must take 1st person, i can see better when the turn begins and i have to steer in and stuff!

3rd person is good for if i want to see the car; if another guy is looking at it while you're racing, it's nicer to put it on 3rd person.

Does 2nd person mode exists??? If that is, how does it looks?

No. But almost all the karts or Formula Fords I've seen have the driver sitting between the front and rear axle in a seated position, not bound head down with his eyes being the furthest forward point of the vehicle...

I rarely (!) literally laugh out loud when I read posts...

👍

If most of you drive in 1st person (which I don't) then what's the point in PD spending hours designing graphics for you to go with a camera that shows none of your car and is also (as has been mentioned) on the bumper?

Nice thought. But it's actually impossible to have a second person view. It's based on grammar, you see:

1st person = me/I. 1st person view should be where the driver of the vehicle (ie the player) is sitting, which is why GT3's bumpercam isn't 1st person view.

2nd person = you. 2nd person view would be you watching the driver. Kind of like bumpercam viewing an AI car?

3rd person = He/she/it. 3rd person view is you driving, but not seeing through where the driver is - the driver becomes he/she/it.

This mode is only available in the replay mode :-D

Personally I perfer 1st person view. I noticed that in Gran turismo (all of 'em) that anyone that currently drives a car in real life, drives in "1st person" mode, and the kids/ those that have never driven a car in their life drive 3rd person. This is from what I have seen, I'm sure when we get world wide it changes, but i'm curious, how many of u guys Drive cars everyday/race cars in real life and drive 1st/3rd person?

the 1st person camera view is a bit low, but to me it feels like it's an incar view just removed the view of the hood. 3rd person view is just wierd for me anymore, i can't see where i'm going, juts lookg at the car, which is a problem i have with poorly done arcade racers where u have ot use 3rd person to play decently.

1st Person for sure. I started out using 3rd, but, once I switched, I found that I could cut in/out of turns without as much braking or chance of catching a guardrail or wall. It just allows me to anticipate WHERE my turn starts, better. However, I will say that, when I was just starting out, 3rd person gave me a better idea as to whether my rear-end was sliding out too much, so I could prevent a spinout.
Also, use the stick over the D-pad, for the most part. You'll find it makes you stronger in turning. However, when Im on a track like SuperSpeedway or the Test course, where its essentially an oval track, I like to use the D-pad there in turns, simply because its less sensitive, therefore, you get less tire-squeels thru your turn.

ehrm...

You have right in the first part about it, but that watching the driver; well, in platform games you see the person from an angle too and that is 3rd person mode.

So i still don't get it...:embarrassed:

Ah yes - but the distinction is:

1st Person: You driving - you seeing out of the eyes of the driver.
2nd Person: Someone else driving - you seeing their body.
3rd person: You driving - you seeing your own body

Get it now? :D Not that it matters in any way.

thedguy: I've been driving for 9 years. I drive every day. I race in ALL driving games in the 3rd person or "chase" view (and I don't do badly out of it either :D)

But, seriously, I don't see anybody suggesting that an in-car view where half the screen is taken up by the hood would be preferable to GT3's 1st-person view. Your POV sitting in front of a TV is bad enough as it is.
Personally I like games with a 'real' divers-eye view. Complete with wheel, screen, bonnet (or 'hood' for non-Brits) etc. Makes it feel that touch more realistic. TOCA did a good in-car although teh best in-vehicle view is in wip3out (the second bast racing game next to GT).

It would be nice to be able to 'glance' left and right, tho.

PD spends time on the graphics so you can see your replay, and ur opponents as you race....

Famine:
The 1st person/bumper cam, is of use when riding in a simulator.
When seated in a simulated cockpit, the view is quite realistic, as the perspective is from that of the seated driver, when the simulated cockpit is positioned correctly (unfortunately blocking the dash info). I suppose, a secondary display could be installed behind (forward of?) the steering wheel and cropped to fit just the dash info.

I find myself doing wilder drifts in bumper cam...

Now in bumper cam I can't see around the 1st place car.

But in chase cam I can't see around the car anyway.

Either way my view is severely hampered!

I understeer like it's my job in 1st person. It's all subjective though, if I were to train in 1st, I'm sure that would change. I'm able to "block" on the straights in 1st person by using the rear view mirror though. Some call it cheating, I call it using the game to my advantage.

Famine, this is purely discussion about camera perspective. I in no way think using 3rd person view is wrong. I have used 1st person view for about 6 years.
Let me start by saying I believe you only think first person view is located in the bumper because you are so used to the higher perspective offered in the behind car view. ( 9 years of using this view you said)
I feel the 1st person view is in car, without the windscreen or bonnet shown. Both views have good and bad points.
The reason that I say the 1st person view is in car is as follows. On the Test track when touching the car infront of yours there is always a gap when you are in first person view, switch view to third person and you see cars touching, switch back to 1st person a gap is again present. The gap is the bonnet. If the camera position was bumper mounted there would be no gap.
You can do the same test and by driving up to the wall so that you are just touching the wall head on. 3rd person shows you touching while 1st person shows a gap which is the invisible bonnet.
I drive always with the 1st person view as I tend to react quicker and have a better feel to what the car is about to do. When I try to use third person I seem to react to what the car has done rather than what the car is about to do.
The bad point about in car view is not knowing exactly where the car is in relation to the edge of the track. You however soon learn to judge the cars position. You can also "feel" when the wheels touch the track edges or curbs.
To me 1st car view gives a more realestic experience to driving whilst playing the GT series.

The camera position does change (1st person) for the type of car you are driving. A F1 you sit low and the PT Cruiser gives a lot higher view. When driving the PT you actually feel you are looking down on the cars around you.

I thought I would use the 3rd person view when I first got GT3 because that's how I played all my other racing games, but when I first started, it just wasn't right. Of course, all my other games were arcade racers and drive nothing like GT3. I then switched to the 1st person view and realized it was much easier and I have used that ever since. It just seems right, I don't know what about the 3rd person view feels wrong.

Alright! I heard you the first time!

And for everyone else who was paying attention in the last thread - see? Erudite, makes his point well. I like the guy.

Sorry for triple post. The page kept timing out so I thought my post failed at each attempt. Obviously some got posted.

Quick update to previous post.
Go to the B1 license test and record a run. Start a second run with 1st person view, but start a little slower than the ghost. You will see the ghost cars bonnet and windscreen in the position that it should be when driving from the "drivers seat".
Thanks for the vote of confidence Famine.

The best view is in Reply Mode with the F090/S where you see the front tires/tyres and steering wheel. I've found this in the 090 only. The hands even move:D

1st person view werkz fur me(works for me).Have always used it with other racing games such Need For Speed Hot Pursuit etc so I grew used to the 1st person view.

I have just made some more observations on the location of the 1st person camera view using the B1 license test as a guide.
The camera is located level in height just above the top of the seats(eye level when sitting) and is on the centre line of the car.
If you watch the ghost car pull away slightly from you you can see the driver black shadow on the left and the right seat to the right. the camera is in direct line with the centre mounted rear view mirror and the small black shape that outlines the gear indicator which is in the centre of your instrument display.

This all makes sense when you do a license test which has the line to follow. Line up the black gear indicator box on the line and you then have the car centered on the correct line. Watch the replay from above and the car should be following the centre of the dotted line.

Does anybody else use the black gear indicator box to centre the car on the line?
