2 player mode?

In the first Racedriver game you had a 4 player splitscreen, it looked like crap and the draw distance was abismal but boy was it fun. The old Hockenheim and bathurst had a fair few multi car pileups.

Linking up two consoles and two tv's isn't too much hassle, wheras doing it with 4 or more is. I mean with two you could just use a crossover cable and not bother with a huub, yes a huub. I've only played a little Halo 4 player deathmatch, but it's so effing hillarious when you kill someone by making a warthog land on them. Halo 2 might be good just for the dethmatch allone.

Have you ever played a racing game on a PC where you were driving on some racetrack, and when a few AI-cars came into your sight the fps dropped down? If additional cars are not that bad, why would the fps drop? And why should PD reduce the resolution in 2 player mode when the PS2 has some power left now?

The fps drops because more polygons (the other cars) come on screen... obvious enough. On PC its too easy to run a game at the very edge of 30fps and then as soon as more 'stuff' comes on screen it'll drop below that. I assume PD knows the PS2's capabilities real well and can account for such variances.

And why would they reduce the screen resolution in 2-player mode? To increase the ever important framerate, obviously. If not for framerate I'm sure they'd have 100 cars on track at any one time each rendered at 1024x768. :indiff:

It's calculating the 3D environments at smaller resolutions - generating half the output. Look at FPS games on computers. Better hardware means higher resolution. This is the same thing. So when you cut it in half you're drastically reducing the amount of CPU time it takes to make the image. Granted it's not half the amount of CPU, but it is seriously less.

that is not correct.

regardless of resolution, it STILL has to render the polygons necessary to shoe each "screen". So in reality, while the track is loaded only once, it is being rendered twice constantly. That's already a lot of extra detail, because has to do TWO sets of lighting calculations, TWO track renders, plus the car renders, plus that's twice the texture information that has to be sreamed (which is why the textures are lower res). It is in NO WAY cutting it in half, resolution does not directly relate to CPU usage, it is involved, but not nearly as important as the other aspects.

This would be much easier to do if the Physics model in GT4 wasn't so demanding, but it is, so with all this extra work load it's a little difficult.

heck look at the quake games on PS2, on split screen it was what, 30FPS, dropped textures, and at times had significant slowdown.

The limitation is not from PD not doing it, or one on one being more "exciting". It's because it's just not technically possible as it is. I hate to say this...but wait till PS3, it will be amazing.

Well before Polyphony Digital announced GT4 would have online play, this was the only bit of multiplay you can have. I've had only a few stints of one-on-one play in at least one GT game as part of my GT experience. To have more competitors on track while entering a two-player face off, it would be pretty tough. I can even remember playing the N64 game "F1 World Championship" against my brother. When I raced a track, it was always me against my opponent. I think if your intent is one-on-one racing, that's the way it should be. Your best vs. your opponent's best. It's a duel, basically. But if you want to race other cars at once, I can remember only a few 3D games which featured more opponents in one-on-one play:

RUSH Series
Super GT/SCUD RACE (arcade)
Mario Kart 64*
Mario Kart Double Dash!!
Ridge Racer Type 4

I placed Mario Kart 64 with an asterisk and here's why. Even though it's 3D, the textures are pre-rendered. Pre-rendered isn't 3D, I'm sorry. And unless some of you know how to improvise for online play, one-on-one may be your best bet. And as far as two-player play goes, I guess it will be classic one-on-one. Or are you okay with one-on-one?

Yep split screen is deffinately more demanding on the hardware. Thats why in say GTC the 2 player mode has made sacrifices to the graphics quality. Although PD did it well & it wasn't ever so noticable when actually racing. Still not like that it mattered when you were driving the Jag S Type R around autumn ring sideways :)

Say, I wonder if B-spec will be available in split-screen mode...

Anyway, there are many games that allow AI in split-screen races, but in the vast majority of them, the number of AI cars is reduced from the SP number.

let´s at least hope that THERE WILL BE A 2-PLAYER MODE WITH SOME AI CARS!!!
...there will be the "normal" 2 player mode(which u know since GT1!)with 1 human on 1!
and no online,heh?...that´s frustating i know!!!:<

I'd like to return to that point. I thought of this myself, shortly after hearing the news, and immediately pictured one of my friends I normally race with. I always turn to him for the Le Mans news and asking him what prototype car I saw online or other endurace stuff like that - he's obsessed with it. Anyways I thought he'd be a great candidate for Me: A-Spec, to race Him: B-Spec, in like a 20 lapper. We still do these all the time and I'm hoping B:Spec will be availible to Split-Screen / LAN competition / MEMORY CARD BATTLE for this reason.

good thoughts but too complicated...personally i wouldnt wanna control a computer AI while my friend controls another...i just plain wanna kick his 🤬 in a 1 on 1 who's better than who fight to the death when you're so out of tire that u grind your rims and can't help but drift cuz its the only way to stay on track....thats the kind of racing i like when it comes to 1 on 1....hehehe
