1: Why do threads now stay unread until you say you're read them? Before the upgrade, after a certain amount of time after activity, threads would stop highlighting themselves, but we have to do it manually now.

2: Where has the search bar gone?

Jordan added #1 in the update to the site. Best guess is that it helps in case people are off for a period of time and they want to catch back up on their threads. Two ways to get rid of this is to either go through all of them or click "Mark Forum Read" button below the Site Support Link.

You can also mark individual forums read from your user menu. See the "Persistent Thread Read Marking" section in the GTP12 forum announcement:

How do we mark a single (sub)forum as read, or an individual thread? All I see anyplace are "mark forums read" controls.

I must say, though, that I very much prefer the new way that threads normally stay not marked as read until they're actually read. Used to drive me nuts, log onto GTP, start reading new posts of interest, finish an hour later and log off. Next day try to figure out what posts you missed in the first couple threads while you were reading the rest of the forums.

The link in the user menu pops up a dialogue which asks you if you'd like to mark as read all the forums or just the subforum you're in. I've dropped the 's' from "Forums" in case that was confusing. The only way to mark an individual thread as read is to actually click on it and read it.
