When the new 7-series came out, everybody who pretended to know anything about cars got on the 'the 7-series is ugly' bandwagon. The first year it was for sale, sales jumped 20%. It didn't silence the critics, but BMW didn't really care about the critics at that point. Are you in the market for a new $70,000 super sedan? Because if you aren't, I don't thing BMW gives a damn about what you think of the new M5.

First..I don't know about you, but I never thought the 7 series was ugly, maybe you hopped onto the bandwagon aswell I don't know, but i've been a fan of the new 7 series for the first one I saw. I've always been a fan of the bigger BMW Sedans.

Second.. Who's to say I am or not, and if I am that car is deffinately not in my interests.... $70,000? The price of the M5 is dropping aswell.

First - the current ones look boring and dated in pictures. They've been selling them since 1997 or so, and it's getting old. It's about time for a re-design, and I'm glad that they're not going for another boring "sure thing" 5-series

Yeah, I agree it's time for a re-dseign, but that design looks horrible. It truley looks like GM Designers played a part in this

i did, i think its awful. and im not alone in this. it seems you either like it or hate it, few people dont have an opinion about it.

on a different forum where people who DO have the money for cars like this, someone said:

You know, I think I keep on deluding myself that I'm going to grow to like the appearance of this car. Every time I see an E55, CL55, or SL55, I think about how beautiful they are. They will definitely give something up to a BMW in driving fun, but a 12 sec 1/4 mile goes a long way toward making the driving experience fun. Those cars also give up nothing to BMW in terms of luxury. Why should we reward a genuinely crappy styling and ergonomic presentation with $90,000 of hard-earned cash? I'm not going to be standing on ceremony or spiting myself by buying a car that I love to see in the garage every day versus one that reminds me of how tasteless BMW's styling has become. Sorry about the rambling post, but I think I'm kidding myself by saying the car will look better in the M version. The car's appearance, iDrive, and interior ergonomics simply DO NOT work for me.

about the e60, and i totally agree

Is it? Because if it's not 'in your interests,' BMW doesn't care about your opinion - especially if you think a 500-BHP V10 super sedan is "just another POS mom sedan with a BMW logo and a 'M5' on the back." That's simply incorrect.

M5..You have to remember...people in the market for 80 thousand dollar cars, want something that look nice too..They want something that will set them apart from other people..They don't want a car who's front end looks almost identical to a pontiac grand prix

I think BMW is doing it in the completely wrong way when it comes to the new design of their cars. I kinda like E60 but I think Z4 and the new 5 series are fugly. And what is worse I notice this styling crisis in a lot of companies and their new models.

Have you ever seen a Z4 up close in person?

I went to bmwm5.com yesterday, and looked around, and read about their member's thoughts on the E60 M5. In one thread alone, on the first page, there were 6+ people who had put down deposits on the new M5. Apparently the people in the market for $80,000 cars do like the extremely overpriced Grand Prix.:p

So what if you don't think it looks good? See my comments about the 7-series above.

The E60 - which you say you like - is the new 5-series - which you say is 'fugly.'

Nice.

*beep* sorry. I wanted to say E65 (7 series):( Which I like a lot.:)

Yes I saw one and had an opportunity to sit in one.. I just don't like the lines of the car and the head/backlights IMHO are very odd.
But it's only my personal opinion.
:)

Oh, I see. I must say I don't find the Z4 too good looking in pictures, but in person I love it. It's something different - not boring looking like a lot of today's cars.

I wonder if Beyerich will make the Z4 into a a Roadster as they did the Z3..That is the only version the the Z3 I liked was the roadster version...Hmm..The mind boggles

Are you talking about making it into a convertible, or an M version roadster? Because nobody actually considered the M Roadster/Coupe a "version of the Z3," it was more of its own vehicle.

This is a much more interesting opinion than it first appears. I've been thinking about it off and on for a couple of days now...

I think that people in general are reactionary, and form incoherent opinions. They say "First impressions last", but first impressions are worth nothing if they're based on nothing.

When the 996 Carrera came out (run with me on this one, I'm coming back to the point), I though it was hideous. In short, it changed a lot of what I loved about the 911. But I thought that Porsche would have it right. I could see that they knew I would change my mind. The other thing was that I didn't really know why I thought it was hideous, I just did.

Fast forward to 2002, and the new 7. I hate the new 7. I think it's really really ugly. But the key here is that I know why I hate it. I hate the front indicators, and the way they make the headlamps (a BMW specialty) look incorrectly proportioned. I hate the rear lights, and the way they lurch across the back of the car, like a desperate flourish of a pen intent on creating commonality. I hate the tailgate, and the way it is higher than the wings (NB I hate this on the Volvo S80 too). In short, I hate most of what makes the new 7 so individualistic.

The fact that I see a lot of these cues in the Z4 and the new 5 makes me shudder. BMW, if buyers are like me, are in for some lean years.

interesting point giles. i will agree with you to a point on the 996. the thing about that is that i first saw the boxter (it carried the 996 front headlights) and i didnt like them, when the 996 came out all i could see was the boxster every time i looked at it. in fact the whole car doesn't look like anything special on paper, but when you see it up close it really takes your breath away. i'm still not an avid fan of the front lights but the back is to die for, and i believe its the most beautiful car in the world (not the standard carrera mind, the ones with the gt2/3 or turbo bodykits).

like wise i didn't fall in love with the e39 (previous 5 series) when it came out but that was entirely unfounded like u say, i didnt know why, i just didnt like it. but i didnt like the e34 (one before it) either so i decided to give it a chance and it won me over.

the new mercs are different, from day one i've been in love with their new design and i love virtually all of them, c,clk,cl,s,sl,e.

the e60 and e65 are different. i know exactly what i hate on them and im not prepared to give them a chance. why should i force myself to like a car just because of its heritage.

not only is the e60 ugly but people who have test driven them say that the interior is extremely tacky and not nearly up to bmw standards at all.

as for sales remaining high, i'd be very interested to know if the SAME people are buying the new e60 that bought the 34 and 39, if its just people that would have otherwise bought japanese tackyness and the previous customers have moved to mercedes, then it should be very worrying for bmw.

I like all the new Merc's too excepting the new CL, and I only dislike it because it's Earth-shattering 'presence' is impacted by its stupid cheap wraparound rear window.

I love the new E-class, but I wish they'd design all-new wheels for it! Leaving old E-class wheels on the new E-class leaves the new design understated and makes it look dated despite it coming out less than a year ago!

Dunno - maybe it shouldn't. New customers are better than anything, and there's no way they can have zero repeat customers unless they go out of business. I do plan to purchase an E60 M5, but only because this is the first time in my life I have the money to do it - I would buy an E39 M5, but if I got it new, it would immediately be dated. I can tell you that many M5 fans feel the same way as I do - we'll like it no matter what it looks like, namely because of what's under the hood.

if i didn't already have the Cerbera i would seriously consider buying an E60 M5, my previous M5 which was an E39 was a great car and i'm sure this new model will be nothing short of amazing, just my opinion

Any thoughts of how the next generation of the M3 might look like? :) Maybe someone of you have heard any rumors about specs?

Dunno - I'm more interested in the next 3-series sedan. I hope BMW doesn't radicalise it, because I'm pretty sure they won't get a 20% lift in sales if they do.

But it would not be as fast, and would cost more to run. ;)

Maybe you're right but according to some articles the new M5 will be able to do 0-60 in less than 4 (in some 4.5) seconds. I think it's fast enough for a 4 door sedan.
:)

the curved rear window is great! well i like it, besides its part of mercedes' coupe heritage or something.

yes indeed. however the first e-class i saw was a brabus one with 4 tailpipes and definitely new wheels, and thats the image left in my mind ever since. in fact i haven't even noticed that the regular ones carry old wheels! :D

new customers may be better than anything but changing ur stable customer base is not a good idea. if a better car comes along those people will just move on, people loyal to bmw might be disappointed, i dont know if u view this particular forum but check out this thread:

http://www.bmwm5.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30398

having said that, i understand what you say about the e60 m5. personally i'd buy a new e39 right now whilst stocks still last, despite it being older. people in that forum say they hold onto their e34s because they are better. its all a matter of personal preference, if the looks dont bother you im sure you will be buying a superior car in terms of performance and handling. its just not the one for me. post some pictures when u do though :P

Some don't, but the very base ones do. In the US, the base is the E320, I think Europe gets the E240 or E270.

Again, I'm on the fence. Hummer is a good example of a company who changed their stable customer base yet reaped the benefits. They branched out and got ten times the amount of sales. Can't discount that.

I'm not sure - I think most BMW M fans agree fairly unanimously that the E34 was the best.

I would pre-order a new M5, but there's no sense in that - I'm going to pick up the first used one I can find. AdvanR rules. :D

interesting points m5power, just came back from town and saw an sl55 there... early evening, lights on, incredibly beautiful car.

if i had the cash i'd get one of those, maybe even over a 996TT, though it would be a tough choice :P as for the e34 m5, i wanted to get one myself, but i think the insurance is a little too high at the mo for me.

its fugly..... just like M5power said....... i own a 2003 M5 and it looks so much better then that......... the new M5 has a nice beautiful engine but the styling?????? the styling is really ugly..... i wish that they would fire Chris bangle...... he really is a disgrace to all bmw..... hes trying to make the bmw like Mercades-benz.... mercades are nice cars, but perform really bad, and are always in the shop for the electronics....... But the M6..... u neva kno.......
