Actually, I believe the push for the design of the front came from the president of Subaru, Kyoji Takenaka. He wanted to see a design that referenced Fuji Heavy Industries role as an aircraft manufacturer. Thus, you see a fuselage with two wings.
It also neatly represents the boxer engine, with the block in the middle and the pistons pushing out the side.
Andreas Zapatinas didn't have much to do with the idea, he joined Subaru after the B11S concept was completed. That was the first car on which the new nose appeared.
I don't want to demean Zapatinas's role in the design of the new Subarus, I think he's done a great job with the new Impreza. But the front-end was not his idea.
