The first race of the season is always very exciting, if only because of the massive build-up over winter, and all of the unanswered questions. With the departure of Michael Schumacher, 2007 finds itself with a lot of wild cards, especially in terms of performance by the rookies and younger drivers. Who will step up?
Renault has owned the circuit for the last two years, but it looks unlikely to go their way this season. A mediocre driver pairing (not to take anything away from Heikki, but he needs time in the sport) and a car that just seems to be missing a few vital tenths.
The race looks like it will be between Ferrari and McLaren, and I think it will be fascinating to see how the weekend shapes up.
The Circuit
The Australian Grand Prix is held at the beautiful Albert Park circuit, which takes advantage of the closed-off public roads around the park. The circuit has a number of flowing corners, but is dominated by its start-stop sections, and includes several possible overtaking points. Fun for all!

Rule Changes to Look Out For
There are a couple of rule changes which will really change the dynamic of a race weekend, and Ill be interested to see the effects from both of them.
First of all, Friday is basically a free test session. A total of 3 hours on-track time, 4 sets of tyres per car, and no engine penalties. This can only be good for fans at the track, and at home. It also gives the rookie drivers a chance to really learn all the intimate details of the circuit, something that rookies didnt really get a chance to do last year.
The tyres are the other really big change. Everyone gets the same two compounds to work with, and they must use both compounds during the race. Having everyone on the same tyres is good for the championship IMO, and it will be interesting to see how the races work out with the new rule.
Of course there are other rule changes, but those are the two that I think will make the biggest impact on race weekends.
Congrats to everyone who survived the winter without going insane, so now we can get down to business!
