The first race of the season is always very exciting, if only because of the massive build-up over winter, and all of the unanswered questions. With the departure of Michael Schumacher, 2007 finds itself with a lot of wild cards, especially in terms of performance by the rookies and younger drivers. Who will step up?

Renault has owned the circuit for the last two years, but it looks unlikely to go their way this season. A mediocre driver pairing (not to take anything away from Heikki, but he needs time in the sport) and a car that just seems to be missing a few vital tenths.

The race looks like it will be between Ferrari and McLaren, and I think it will be fascinating to see how the weekend shapes up.

The Circuit

The Australian Grand Prix is held at the beautiful Albert Park circuit, which takes advantage of the closed-off public roads around the park. The circuit has a number of flowing corners, but is dominated by its start-stop sections, and includes several possible overtaking points. Fun for all! :dopey:

Rule Changes to Look Out For

There are a couple of rule changes which will really change the dynamic of a race weekend, and I’ll be interested to see the effects from both of them.

First of all, Friday is basically a free test session. A total of 3 hours on-track time, 4 sets of tyres per car, and no engine penalties. This can only be good for fans at the track, and at home. It also gives the rookie drivers a chance to really learn all the intimate details of the circuit, something that rookies didn’t really get a chance to do last year.

The tyres are the other really big change. Everyone gets the same two compounds to work with, and they must use both compounds during the race. Having everyone on the same tyres is good for the championship IMO, and it will be interesting to see how the races work out with the new rule.

Of course there are other rule changes, but those are the two that I think will make the biggest impact on race weekends.

Congrats to everyone who survived the winter without going insane, so now we can get down to business!

I'm very excited to see how this weekend turns out! Great job on the map too, Blake.

Im very excited! Its gonna be a good race, last season races was brill so hopefully this seasons will be as well.

And the first GTP GP prediction of the season from me is as follows:

1. Alonso
2. Kovalainen
3. Heidfeld
4. Raikkonen
5. Hamilton
6. Fisichella
7. Massa
8. Button or Kubica

Man, I want to watch this race so much but I think it will air around 2AM over here on Sunday, and my friends are throwing a party on the same night. I would stay home to watch it but they are close friends of mine and my girlfriend would be very mad if we didn't go just so I could watch the race.

I hope it airs later than that, 4AM would be nice. Can someone tell me what's the GMT time for this?

My predictions

1. Kimi Raikonen
2. Alonso
3. Massa
4. Heidfeld
5. Hamilton
6. Kubica
7. Rubens Barrichello
8. R. Schumacher

Well its on live here in the UK at around 3am. So by my calculations it should be live at exactly midnight over where you are.

Anyway, I'd like to say I expect to see a battle for 1st between Ferrari and McLaren, unfortunatly I'm expecting one or the other to walk it... :indiff:

My Predictions

2. Alonso
3. Massa
4. Button (If the car doesn't blow up)
5. Kubica
6. Hamilton
7. Kovalainen
8. Rosberg

Thanks for the tip. I won't even be able to watch the qualifying on friday night, there's another birthday party to go.

So I have two days to find a working VCR.

It's going to be a late night, what with work and green beer that day.

Imagine the tires rotating , I white circle would form :) thats how its going to be visible :)

Yep. I thought the red sticker would be it, but the white dot would be more visible.

That's what I love about Daylight Savings. Not only do certain places not participate (ahem, Arizona, please pick a time zone and stick with it), but we can't even agree to all do it at the same time! Our clocks already changed, and with it, mass confusion and panic over the systems that did not do it automatically.

The race: like needles to a junkie, the sight of F1 will cool these jangled nerves. I think it's on at 8 PM, so there's still plenty of time to hang out afterwards :D. I love the west coast sometimes...

I was about to say that it would make them A LOT more distinguished, but then think of the Red Rims on the Spyker, not very nice.
