BMW Sauber

Testing is under way in Barcelona. Only BMW have whipped out the 2009 aero so far, it reminds me of the ol' walrus nosed Williams.

I have to say the Honda look great, although I take it has something to do with the rear wing. That won't be legal though will it...

Yup, it's their old '08 wing - will be updated.

The BMW is, so far, the only team that looks almost completely-'09 legal, while Williams only ran rear and front wings, and Honda just front wings.

Im already crying at how ugly the cars look... oh well step backwards for mankind, just like getting rid of concorde... :indiff:

Lets hope the racing is enjoyable though.

Robin.

OMG, what have they done to Formula One??? The cars look like something out of a very badly proportioned kids drawing! Bring back winglets, bring back appropriately sized wings and get rid of the balled tires.

Maybe the cars will grow on me, but I dont think there is another person on the Earth that thinks these cars look better than last year.

Results for Day 1 added. Sato tops Buemi, and each of the STRs did as many laps as some teams did in total!

The new front wings do look ghastly, but I attribute it to their test mule status. With such a limited knowledge of aerodynamics, in reference to the new restrictions, teams are having to reinvent the wheel. These simple, blocky, and quite bulky looking designs will no doubt evolve into curvaceous designs, aside from the spec main element. For now, teams seem to be getting an idea of how these things work in practice. Contrary to some belief, much of the F1 aerodynamic knowledge comes from trial and error.

Day 1 times:

Code:
Pos Driver Team Time Laps
 1. Sato Toro Rosso-Ferrari (B) 1:20.763 121
 2. Buemi Toro Rosso-Ferrari (B) 1:21.071 117
 3. Wurz Honda (B) 1:21.198 77
 4. de la Rosa McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:21.417 65
 5. Badoer Ferrari (B) 1:22.038 93
 6. Paffett McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:22.235 47

 8. Loeb Red Bull-Renault (B) 1:22.503 82
 9. Piquet Renault (B) 1:22.560 80
10. Klien BMW-Sauber (B) 1:22.883 53
11. Hulkenberg Williams-Toyota (B) 1:23.467 116
12. Liuzzi Force India-Ferrari (B) 1:23.794 86
13. Sutil Force India-Ferrari (B) 1:23.832 88
14. Gene Ferrari (B) 1:24.117 32
15. Senna Honda (B) 1:24.343 39
16. van der Garde Renault (B) 1:24.908 27
17. di Grassi Honda (B) 1:25.512 48

Only Kimi Raikkonen managed a 1:20.7 over the Spanish GP race weekend, so Sato's pace in the 2008 Toro Rosso seems very good. Kubica is only 1.6 seconds slower with the 2009 aero package, Klien 2.1 with the same plus KERS. Sebastien Loeb nearly 2 seconds faster than Senna, who in turn is a second faster than di Grassi - Honda, start talking to Citroen now :sly:

Edit: Too slow, chicken marengo. Tree'd by Metar.

Roo, just remember the STR did laps on Slicks, as well - so who knows what configuration they were really running, since the wings were also the Monza-spec parts. '09 cars, by the time teams complete their packages, should be equal, if not faster, than those of '08. Times between teams shouldn't be read into too much, since cars will vary even more than during the regular testing with slicks - 5 seconds is quite the gap, and aero- and tyre-configurations vary wildly..

What the.... Can someone fill me in here, sorry for my stupidity but should Sedastian Loeb not be preparing himself for the Irish Rally in 2 months or did I miss something massive? Is it just a trial run to see what he thinks of F1 cars?

Two months is plenty of times for a guy who's been thrashing the competition five years in a row.. He got that test-drive as a present from his Citroen's sponsor - Red Bull.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm going to wait till we see the final versions of the 2009 cars before passing comment.
Though I will say I like Williams' wing more than the other two, the Honda's in particular looks very odd and fragile, I don't know why, maybe its me just being used to the nose bridges they've been using, but it still looks incredibly thin and fragile in my opinion, too much space in the center.

I looked through these, the BMW looks like it got a hit from the bangle stick. The Honda looked awsome, untill I saw the rear wing. And don't make me start about the ferrari.

EDIT:
Notice how BMW just tapes instruments onto the front of their car.

So, where is this bulge you speak of on the ferrari?

Yea, whats with the Ferrari?? Is that an air vent to cool the Kers they are using??? It looks like some sort of dislocated shoulder!

Didn't it used to be wider front track than rear track?

To be honest. I LOVE the front, now the little stubby wing on the back is a turn off.

What would some of the female F1 fans say?

💡

"U! G! L! Y! Your cars have no alibi. They're Ugly! They're Ugly! Uh-huh, they're ugly!":yuck:

On top of that, looking at them at certain angles might give the onlooker a bit of a case of eyestrain.:odd: Even if they're already wearing eyeglasses.

No offense...:O

The BMW looks wretched. I hope they all of the cars don't look like that.

Can't really say much on the looks, but the 09 spec looks really horrid on that BMW. :yuck: Since this is just testing, there isn't really much a point on who is being the fastest. If Sato keeps outpacing Buemi like this, surely he would get that seat at STR next year! 👍 Also, Loeb ain't doing too badly in that RBR..... 👍
