Regardless of whether Jaguar is for sale, the British automaker is widely known to be at work on a replacement to its aging S-Type luxury sedan. During the launch of the 2007 XKR, Jaguar reportedly previewed the 2008 S-Type to dealers. The U.K.'s AutoExpress claims to have talked to individuals who saw the preview, and has put together an artist's illustration of how the car looks. The image appears on the cover of the latest issue of the magazine, which is in stores and available for order now.

Hmmm... I'm not certain if I like it or not. I mean it looks alright, but it just seems odd in a "not Jaguar" sort of way. Maybe when things become a little more "offical," I might warm up to it a bit more.

That's it right there, what the hell was wrong with this concept having a couple of extra doors fitted to it and having it's wheelbase stretched a couple of inches...

Imo they've gone the wrong direction with this design. The good news is, that it isn't an official design, it's artwork for the magazine.
 
As seems to be a recurring theme with a lot of new concepts: the individual elements are nice, they just don't belong together. And I don't think this S-Type went partway down the XK assembly line, I think it got stuck and someone just forced it the rest of the way. Whatever was still stuck on the car at the end, stayed on.

^ That image is indeed the right direction for Jaguar, for the S-Type or new XJ. It's a retro look in structure, but properly modernized (not like the current S-Type or XJ, which are just smoothed out copies of older cars).

Yeah, I like this picture, too. I've always felt there was just that little bit missing from the current S-Type to make it look modern. That front end on the current S-Type would probably make sales double overnight... :loL:

The top picture is an amazingly inept photochop... come on... a Buick rear-end, Mazda headlights, and god knows where they got the front bumper... oh, and the grille's crooked, too.
 
There's not much wrong with the Mondeo's chassis, it's a superb platform.
 
And it's the X-Type that uses the Mondeo chassis, not the S-Type. The current S-Type uses a chassis shared with the Lincoln LS.

I see, I know they said the x-type wasnt gonna get a new chassis' lets see if the s-type does.

Why not? It's a fine chassis, however there are other parts of a Mondeo on an X-Type which do damage Jagaurs image. But not the chassis.

Jaguar is meant to be the british answer to mercedes, and a sportier one at that, it aint happening with the mondeo chassis. Jaguars already behind audi,mb, bmw and arguably saab, and MB and Audi are majorly stepping up the game to assault the 3er.

In defence for the X-Type here, the chassis it has is great. Yes, it might be aging a bit now, but it can still stay up to modern standards. It does what it's known for on the Mondeo: a sporty drive AND good comfort. That's exactly what Jaguar is about. BMWs may handle better, but they have a less comfortable ride. It's a contrast with Mercedes - they have a softer ride thus more comfortable but don't handle as well as - but not far off - either of them. As with Saab, well, that chassis on the 9-3 is completely flawed: it cannot take the power of some of the engines in its range and has sloppy handling, just like what it's like with the same chassis on the Vauxhall Vectra. As with the A4, though, I wouldn't be surprised if that was similar to the Jaguar just with a harsher ride.

I think it's right up there. Like live4speed said, it's bits other than the chassis that let it down.

But what does that have to do with the chassis? Especially if the Vectra/Croma chassis doesn't stop the Saab...

And, that aside, what does the Mondeo chassis in the X-Type have to do with the S-Type?

Jaguar can still compete, but they can't get buy with the aincient chassis that sit beneath the S-Type and X-Type anymore. Ford has moved on with the S-Type chassis, evolving it for the Mustang, and stoped it there. The X-Type should be dead, and it isn't, and that surprises a lot of people.

I love Jaguar with all of my heart, especially the XJ and XK. The S-Type never recieved my love because I always thought it was ugly, same can be said of the X-Type, but I hated that because it was just a stupid idea for America.

Can they bring the S-type back from the dead? Yes, I think they can. But first things first, they can't go about building a Buick Lucerne:

The X-Type chassis isn't ancient at all. The S-Type's isn't really either - it was significantly altered in the 2003 facelift.
 
Was it? I really wasn't sure. I can still recall the S-Type being heavily mocked here in the US for not living up to the Lincoln LS, despite the fact they shared a chassis. As for the X-Type, the Mondeo left here a long time ago (2000 to be exact), and even that wasn't a very well-liked car in the US.
 
Yep. The car was significantly changed in 2003 - handling, ride, quality, most of the engines, the lot. In 2004, they improved it even more by even more tweaks with the suspension, a re-arrange in the interior department and an aluminium bonnet to reduce weight and to aid handling even more.

Edit: Oh, btw, I can add another road group test to that list:

What Car? magazine: BMW 530d vs Merc E-Class E270 CDi vs Jaguar S-Type 2.7D SE - Jag comes second. The Jag's plus points were the handling, refinement and smooth gearbox.
 
Jaguar in the US usually wins for the smooth ride and nice interior appointments. But any time sport is considered as a factor, they often lose out. As they should, IMO, as I have never viewed Jaguar as a "sporty" company outside of the XK.

...And thats why I love Jaguar. They build what they know how to build, BMW be damned!

Inside Line has published a comparo of the new 2007 Jaguar XK8 Coupe and the 2007 BMW 650i. The $86,125 (MSRP) Jag comes armed with a 300-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, while the BMW 650i is equipped with a similar six-speed automatic transmission, but with a 360-horsepower, 4.4-liter V8 engine. The BMW's price, meanwhile, was lower at $81,140 MSRP.

This Jaguar is the brand's latest salvo in its battle against obsolescence in the super luxury segment. Inside Line found the coupe "drop-dead gorgeous" and commented that it offered plenty of luxurious comfort. Unfortunately for the venerable cat, the 650i beat it in virtually every other category with a better backseat, more truck space, and superior fit and finish, all for a lower asking price than the Jaguar.

I cant find any reviews for the smaller jaguars, but like yssman has mentioned even on the british subaru impreza forum they mock the x-type.
