This is pretty impressive! I'm glad my personal favourite bike was able to do it.

2008 Yamaha R6 - first 600 to break 170 mph
The last time that the Yamaha R6 was redesigned in 2006, the focus was purely on the racetrack, with street riding a distant thought in the backs of engineers minds. We're not suggesting that the R6 isn't a capable bike to ride on the street, but there are certainly far better choices if your main goal were to commute back and forth to work. On the track, however, the R6 shines with its high-RPM power band and razor-sharp handling traits. This year, the R6 got a few tweaks in an effort to add midrange power while still retaining its class-leading high-RPM punch, including a higher compression ratio, Yamaha's Chip Controlled Intake (YCC-I) and Yamaha's Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T). These changes have allowed the R6 to break the 170 mile-per-hour barrier, a first for a 600cc machine. Fortunately, Yamaha saw fit to increase chassis stability by reinforcing the steering head, engine mounting points and rear swingarm pivot, among other subtle tweaks. Suspension tuning is slightly different too, with a 41mm inverted fork and a more adjustable rear shock.

We are quite impressed by the speed and power that Yamaha has wrangled from its middleweight racer, which makes up more than half its total sportbike sales.

It's pretty cool for a 600cc bike to hit 170. Most of the bikes north of 750cc could easily or somewhat easily hit 160 and beyond. Yamaha does make some quality motorcycles no matter what the displacement or type of bike. Looks like Yamaha wants to raise the bar a bit while most of its fellow Japanese rivals look to better that with 600cc bikes. Not to mention other non-Japanese marques creating fast and powerful bikes in the 600cc range...

Just yesterday my wife calls me and said "HAVE YOU SEEN THE FLAME JOB ON THE 08 R6?!!!" I promptly followed by saying. "NO...YOU CANNOT TRADE IN YOUR 04 FOR THE 08."

Now you go and point out that it’s is hot as it looks….NICE!

I wish I had that issue with my girlfriend.

I'd personally go with Yamaha Blue with silver flames or even red with silver flames. It seems like a hot battle of superbikes are underway this year across a variety of discplacement levels. I've read about Honda's CBR1000RR revamping, Kawasaki bringing the ZX-14 (which I will do a thread on in the future), and Yamaha bringing out this killer R6. The R6 is WAY out of the leagues of the other two bikes I mentioned, but it is still an awesome and competitive motorcycle. I know one of the YZF-R6's competitors is the Honda CBR600RR. While I respect Honda fully in motorcycles (as well as cars and other consumer goods), I think Yamaha built the better mouse trap with the R6.

After seeing what my wife drives you'll understand why the yellow and black paint gets her all worked up.

Uhuh.

Like that paint scheme will ever come to the UK.

:ouch:

Confirmed: We get black/red text, multi-blue, and red/white. Sucky, sucky, sucky.

I like the UK version of good old blue. The gold wheels is a much better touch then the US version.

It's a bit of a toss up on the black. The US version seems to have a gun metal grey wheel which I'd need to see in person before the final verdict. I am a sucker for black and red together so maybe I again like the UK version better.

Depends on what you're looking for on the alternate color this year. We almost never get that red and white version so that has always been a desirable option. Flames make everything go faster so I guess you lose on this one. :p

Blue and gold is my color combination. I usually like rich blue and a 24-karat kind of gold. I also like the UK's silver(?)/black/red. It may look simple, but I sometimes find beauty in simplicity. Just don't call the R6's engine "simple!"

White is really big in Europe at the minute. You'll see a lot of hot cars and bikes in magazines in white.

My wife is evil. Today is her day off, so she goes down the the shop and then sends me this pic.
