Impreza STI's are know for not making the horsepower the manufacturers claim.

Less? How much less? Between an EVO and STi the clear choice is an STi...just not the ugly new one.

Well I dont know about the US, But in the UK STI's make 300hp and you can get Evo's from 260, 280,300,320,330,340 and a 400hp factory upgrade.

In the UK impreza drivers all acknowledge evos are faster but theyre alot more expensive to run. When a impreza driver swaps for a evo they say that hes "gone over to the darkside"

I dont know what figure exactly the sti's were making but id say about 10hp less than stated. Impreza drivers didnt really care about it.

And let's not forget that the EVOs get dreadful gas mileage. And the turbo lag on the FQ400 is the most rediculous thing I'd ever seen.

Do Mitsubishi UK even make a FQ400 Evo IX?

I don't think its as bad as JC makes out on Top gear.

It is, he demonstrated it, he didn't just talk about it, he got out accelerated by a small hatchback in 3rd I think with both doing a rolling start.

I saw it, he had it in 6th gear not 3rd. at (from memory could be off) 30mph, in 3rd the Evo would have slaughted the hatch.

It was in 6th gear and the evo fq400 top speed is just shy of 180MPH. The suzuki probably struggles to hit 100mph.

Mitsubishi dont make FQ400 EVO 9's but I think you can get mitsu to upgrade a 340 to 400hp.

My bad then, I just remember it wrong.

Volkswagen GTi?? :odd:

Hey hey now, there isnt anything wrong with the GTI. It my not be as quick as the Mustang GT in the straight line, but on the right kind of track, the GTI could hold it's own against the 'Stang.

Being that we dont have the current MKV R32, which would fall under the $30K mark, the GTI is the next best thing in the VW line.

Of course, all of that changes after the new Camaro comes out!

Yeah, don't knock the GTI! It offers a boatload of giggle-tastic motoring fun, especially considering the FWD layout, and it offers more visibility, more practicality, better fuel economy, and more refinement than the Mustang. :sly:

God I wish people would just quit the petty bickering over stupid things like this bhp war. It's like school children arguing over who's bicycle has the most awsome colors or something.

You do have a point, but engineering quality is hardly a worthless topic. :indiff:

I wish the US would have recieved the R32 along time ago. It's definately the best VW in my eyes...and the performance isn't anything to scoff at. While the price is a bit steep it's still German engineering--which is a good thing last time I checked. :sly:

I always thought of the R32 as the "sophisticated man's" sport compact, far above the Evo and STi here in the 'States. But, we only recieved 5000 in 2004, and those may be the only R32s we get. Word is that VW might delay the R32 launch in the US (presuming it will happen), and instead wait for the R36, which is still two or more years away.

...Crap...

Yo but...not to offend you YSSMAN...but GTi's style sucks crap. I saw one at the auto show in Vancouver, it looked even more dreadful in real life than on paper.

I think the problem might be the increased ride height in the North American model, which is quite noticable, but other than that I personally like how the MkV GTI looks.

On the R36, I don't think that's the plan anymore, because VW are having troubles fitting the 3.6L engine with the haldex coupling into the Golf. There are doubts whether it's doable at all.

I've herd the same thing Humbo. I'm fine with keeping the 3.2L VR6 under the hood, as the 3.6L will probably be too expensive for most of the folks anyway. VW may as well just modify the 3.2L in the R32 and ship it out... I wouldnt be surprise to see VW work with RPA High Performance once again (see Jetta, Passat, and Touraeg R-GT models) to modify the R32 to better match the Subaru STi and Evo X.

Why did the MKV GTI get a highered ride height for the US market? Im contemplating getting one for my birthday. Right now each seperate dealer can only put in a order for one once a month. There are 06 plates going for 5 grand over its list price on autotrader.

To meet US bumper height restrictions.
