The current styling of the Mazda MX-5 could well be described as just a bit boring with very round corners that play it safe. Mazda would like to change the image of its iconic little roadster and revised styling is certainly on the way. We have an early shot of the changes courtesy of the interwebs and, while they are a welcome refresher, the design team didn't quite go far enough. The only real changes visible to the naked eye are in the front fascia, which sports styling inspired by tweaks made to the latest rotary-powered RX-8. Front and center is a gaping grill that features five distinct corners instead of the old oval opening. Flanking that new mug are angled fog light surrounds and swept-back headlights above. The changes are mostly design elements seen on Mazda's latest batch of concept cars, though overall it's a safe update for an already safe design – and very close to what we were expecting – but we're still hoping for more from the next-gen MX-5.

Looks like its just a face lift like what the RX-8 received, but I'd hope for more eventually. Hell, if they got around to sticking the 2.5L in there, that could get interesting...

I like the exterior changes. Now all they need is a proper engine and the extra interior room so I can fit.

I like the changes. They made the car look a little more aggressive and interesting to look at. Now they just need to do a Mazdaspeed edition.

I disagree.

Turbocharge it, sure, but don't put a bigger engine in it. Why have manufacturers started feeling the need to put bigger engines in everything they produce?

If the Miata needs a 2.5 to making things "interesting" then they've gone and ruined the whole point of it in the first place.

When will someone finally build a cheap rwd car with a small high revving engine again? One that isn't crap at least. Everyone keeps coming up with "concepts" but it never actually happens, then they go off and cater to the next power junkie with a bigger engine. A maita with an engine nearly as big as the past generation GT-R. Yes, thats the perfect mix for a car that defined the cheap, affordable, fun, high revving lightweight roadster for 15 years.

I think the automotive world is going down the drain.

Sorry for the rant, I just really think someone needs to build a "first generation" Miata.

I was the MPS/Mazdaspeed 2.3 turbo under that bonnet. Can you only imagine how fast that little thing would be? I don't even want to know.

So, they throw away all of the design details that everyone loved on the Mazda Ibuki concept so they could turn it into a mini-RX8, a car that is at best polarizing? Its a fricken' Miata. It isn't supposed to look tough or aggressive.

I want to see a pic of that from the front. When the new RX-8 s viewed from the front it's got an evil grin to it. I wonder if this miata will have that too seeing that they seem to have given the miata the RX-8 treatment to it.

Would it even be controllable? I like power but not so much that if I hardly touch the throttle while cornering it i'll send myself into a wall or such. But generally yes... more power can only get better.

Perhaps not but it's definitely appealing the way it looks. ;)

Doesn't matter. There won't be a Mazdaspeed edition of the NC. The 2.3 from the other Mazdaspeeds will not fit.

Which was probably intentional.

Don't rule out a Mazdaspeed altogether, though. They might just turbo the normal engine like they did with the previous Mazdaspeed Miata.

Not with that engine. But, who's to say they won't screw around with the current engine?

Doesn't need the 2.3 to be a Mazdaspeed.

Honestly, I think it looks better, but either needs to chase the S2000 or go on a significant diet.

I completely understand what you mean, but the extra power would be nice. If I were to go out and get a Miata today, certainly I'd opt for the stripped down model with the 2.0L and be just fine. But given the conditions of the market, I don't think we'll see anything close to an NA Miata for some time.

Of course it'd be nice, but it's just not the point of the Miata in the first place.

What the hell does NC mean? I'm not up on my MX-5 knowledge ... for a reason.

What's funny is with those wheels, it looks almost like the S2000...
Yes it does have a minor resenblance to the S2000 if you focus mroe on the wheels and side profile.;)
It would be great if the y made a hard-top version for both the S2000 and the MX-5...I'm not a real big fan of convertables.:indiff:
However the MX-5 looks ALOT better now than the older versions.:dopey:
