Oh my god:yuck: Surely the wing isnt supposed to be wider than tires! I think it would look better on slicks than on the old grooves :)

Just as I'm FINALLY getting used to the new rear wings, BMW decide to race a combine harvester ... that said, I am liking the fact that they're getting rid of all the finky little aerodynamic aids like the bridge-nose and all the things dripping off the sidepods. Are the shark fins going as well?

With BMW'S livery it actually looks ALOT like a Formula BMW.

Slicks will remain at the same sizes next year.

That looks like an Intermediate (or Demo?) tyre, and it doesn't look that different to 2008 tyres.

I definitely remember somewhere saying that rear tyre width changes by 40mm for next year.

Testing is under way in Barcelona. Only BMW have whipped out the 2009 aero so far, it reminds me of the ol' walrus nosed Williams.

I get all sorts of feelings here, and none are very good... except maybe the neverending gutwrenching laughter.
it´s just :yuck::lol::mad::confused::odd::ouch: if you know what I mean.

That will take me a while to get used to...

Same here.

The renders and the Williams looked lovely, but BMW's car is all wrong. It's like its proportions are calculated wrong or something, the nose is too fat, and the front wing is far too wide according to the rear wing :indiff: However, I'm loving those new sidepods though, lovely shape 👍

Seriously, DO NOT WANT! :yuck:

They wanted to, but didn't in the end.

That being said, I think a centralized thread for 2009 testing is appropriate, to sum them all up during the season. Honda got some '09 bits out, too.

Am I the only one who thinks these cars look fresh? The rear is a little goofy to me, but the huge front wings are sweet.

A bosozoku F1 car would be awesome.

This reminds me of the question of upper human or lower human half of the mermaid. . .

But in this case you get both.

Very true. And not even a pretty fish, at that.

Also note Ferrari's Ferrankenstein radiator. It's huuuuge! No chance on hell this thing will remain on the final car - such un-symmetric designs are terrible for balance - but my god, cooling seems to be a problem. BMW's sidepods are no dwarfs either..

F1 cost savings: part-time pit crew, part time dishwasher:sly:

good eye i didnt even notice the rubber gloves until you pointed that out. man they must still be unsure of there KERs system. wonder if the pit crew in the races will be wearing them as well. that would be funny to watch.

Here's a photo of the new aero + the new slick tyres. Get used, it's what it's gonna race on 2009:

Between the new aero, the new tyres and the angle of the photo that looks like a toy. A very expensive, full-scale F1 toy car. It makes me want to grab it and make the "vrooom!" noise with my mouth.

Heh, actually, it does remind me of a Scalextric for some reason.

The FIA is always looking for ways to slow these things down , therefore I believe that is the reason for the smaller wing , but they did give in on full slicks 👍

EDIT: some more of the sidepod and rear wing.

Someones been shooting the rear wing!

Nope. The smaller rear wing was designed to reduce the vortex by the combined effects of the wing's endplates (inwash) and the diffusor's (upwash), which resulted in strong turbulence. The endplate's inwash is actually a welcome thing (it calms the wake), but combined with the upwash it created a terrible vortex.

A narrow, tall rear wing means upwash won't be as strong (lately, teams used the wing as a virtual extension of the diffuser) while still creating the same inwash. That's why we have a narrower rear wing - less downforce is just a side-effect, not the reason. Likewise, the new wings are like that so the middle section (most susceptible to dirty air from the upwash-inwash vortex) is aero-neutral (no lift or downforce) and thus doesn't matter when in dirty air, while the more "immune" outer sections are enlarged, even if simplified.

2009 Changes
-revs cut 18,000rpm
-No internal tuning - just trumpet and injector tuning
-No In-season testing except during practice
-dramatic aero development changes, as well, via regs over use of wind-tunnel and CFD

Beyond 2009 Changes
-tire warmers will be banned in 2010
-same engine, or supplied engines for independents
-refueling ban
-possibly shorter races...

Yeah just saw it.
GP Update
he threat of a standard F1 engine has been averted as teams agreed to other cost-cutting measures in relation to the power units and that in-season testing in 2009 is banned.

From 2009 the following measures have been implemented:

Engine
- Engine life to be doubled. Each driver will use a maximum of eight engines for the season plus four for testing (thus 20 per team)

- Limit of 18,000 rpm

- The three-race lifespan rule voted on 5 November remains in force

- Cost of engines to independent teams will be approximately 50% of 2008 prices.

- Unanimous agreement was reached on a list of proposed changes to the Renault engine for 2009; all other engines will remain unchanged. Comparative testing will not be necessary

Testing
- No in-season testing except during race weekend during scheduled practice

Aerodynamic research
- No wind tunnel exceeding 60% scale and 50 metres/sec to be used after 1 January 2009
- A formula to balance wind tunnel-based research against CFD research, if agreed between the teams, will be proposed to the FIA

Factory activity
- Factory closures for six weeks per year, to accord with local laws

Race weekend
- Manpower to be reduced by means of a number of measures, including sharing information on tyres and fuel to eliminate the need for "spotters"

Sporting spectacle
- Market research is being conducted to gauge the public reaction to a number of new ideas, including possible changes to qualifying and a proposal for the substitution of medals for points for the drivers. Proposals will be submitted to the FIA when the results of the market research are known.

From 2010 the following measures will be implemented:

Power train
- Engines will be available to the independent teams for less than €5 million per team per season. These will either come from an independent supplier or be supplied by the manufacturer teams backed by guarantees of continuity. If an independent supplier, the deal will be signed no later than 20 December 2008.

- This same engine will continue to be used in 2011 and 2012 (thus no new engine for 2011).

- Subject to confirmation of practicability, the same transmission will be used by all teams

Chassis
- A list of all elements of the chassis will be prepared and a decision taken in respect of each element as to whether or not it will remain a performance differentiator (competitive element).

- Some elements which remain performance differentiators will be homologated for the season

- Some elements will remain performance differentiators, but use inexpensive materials

Race weekend
- Standardised radio and telemetry systems

- Ban on tyre warmers

- Ban on mechanical purging of tyres

- Ban on refueling

- Possible reduction in race distance or duration (proposal to follow market research)
