It's an all-new Bentley, it's called the Mulsanne, and it's a vehicle that more than a few auto aficionados have been waiting for. Introduced this afternoon at Pebble Beach, the Mulsanne is a clean sheet redesign of Bentley's ever-enduring flagship and according to Bentley CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen, when they sat down to figure out everything they wanted to change on the Arnage, by the time they were finished, nearly nothing remained.

The Mulsanne is about eleven inches longer than the Flying Spur and rides on a new, bespoke chassis that sits so low on its wheels you can barely get a finger between the top of the front tire and the wheel well. The swelling line of the rear-quarter panel is reminiscent of the Brooklands. However, we were told that since Bentley had a good idea of what the Mulsanne was going to be when they were designing the Brooklands, they incorporated features that became aesthetic stepping stones to the Mulsanne.

The headlight arrangement is an homage to the historic 8-liter Bentleys from the brand's pre-Rolls-Royce days, that had their smaller lamps mounted slightly outboard from the mains. The central headlight element is ringed by daytime-running-light LEDs – when you see the car coming at you, it'll be unmistakable. In back, the taillight treatment is Continental series, but if you step away, it doesn't look like a Continental at all; the mass is broken up by gentle curves and accent planes. And get a load of that C-pillar...

Inside, the overhaul continues. Gone are the mid-century ergonomics and design of the Arnage, replaced by a cabin that showcases chrome-accented dials and modern switchgear -- like a joystick controller for the screen – among a forest of wood. Oh, and a brand new steering wheel.

You can find the press release after the jump and the high-res photos below, but what you won't find are things like engine and powertrain details. Those will remain secret until the Mulsanne's European reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show. For the time being then, we can probably all be content to feast on the Mulsanne's looks.

I think it looks pretty cool. The headlights are a little bizarre. It probably would have been cool if they had made the design a little more swoopy.

Headlights look cool on the far side but don't gel with the front lines when looking at them from the near side. They should've protruded them a little more. Looks like a pulled a Mazda with the whole OH HAI! look.

Anybody likes its headlights look? Me, I think it's awful. Are they out of ideas or what.

Ugly thing. Looks like a smiling face head on. What is this obssetion with making cars look like kiddy fidlers these days.

...sits so low on its wheels you can barely get a finger between the top of the front tire and the wheel well.

Well, you probably could actually. I reckon I could fit my entire hand in there.

If they changed the front lights, I'd be in love.

Hmmmm.... not sure what to make of this.

I really like the profile and the rear styling, basically everything from the front wings back. But I'm not convinced by the front end. And gold with chrome wheels is not a good colour combination.

I caught an old episode of Topgear yesterday, with the Bentley Brooklands coupe... now that's a good looking Bentley.

I actually like the big headlights. Makes it look more like a Rolls-Royce than a Rolls-Royce.

The more I look at it, the easier it is to get past the awkward headlights and goofy grin.

Although I do think it would have been cooler if they lost the blocky look of the front end and designed some flowing front fenders. The look isn't bad right now but I think they could have done a more classic look doing that.

And are those parking sensors for the front end? That's how you know this thing is huuuuge.

I'm still quite interested in why they bothered. The Arnage was old, yes, but it was British. And, more importantly, it still was a completely competent competitor to the Phantom.

Though they kept the engine, so VAG rocks for that.

Seeing as how the pinnacle for Bentley models for me is this...

...You can imagine my personal skepticism with the Mulsane. But, I have to admit, I do fancy the new car. I think the only regret is losing the awesome Packard-derived V8 that was only available with the big GM slushbox. Seeing the "6.75 Litre" badges always was totally awesome, and the idea of seeing some new "8 Litre" ones should be fine. Fingers crossed we get a massive V8, but in all likelihood, it'll be some kind of offshoot of the W12 its siblings already use.

But, c'mon. How are they going to top this?

Im not sure what to call that, are they trying to make people giggle at the front end? I did! Maybe if the re-design'd abit...

Motor Trend says it is a redesigned version of the current 6.75.

Interesting. Internets had suggested a W12. If it is a reworked version of the old 6.75 Litre, I would be pleased. Question is, will it rev above 4600 RPM now? Not that it really matters I suppose. Its still totally awesome.

Better question: Do I still get to buy $30K brakes?

Is their new so-called Phantom-fighter? Anyways, the design is a relatively big leap and will take some getting used to. However, for first official pictures I am already warming to it which is more than I can say most of the time.

Just realised where the designer got his influence from:

I still, however, like it. A lot.

I dont know why the 'real deal' motors are starting to look like the cheap nockoff's. The front of this just looks horrid to me and Rolls Royce's design is in a totally different league.

Bentley should have stuck to the 4 round lights all the same size design, the new one reminds me of THIS!

Ah...great minds think alike 👍.

As for me, I love all of it exept those lights off to the side at the front. Yes, I can handle the big ones, and I see that they needed to fill that side space, but I think this is one of the few places that a wrap around LED strip would look better. I love the profile of the front, but those side front lights - Bentley, what were you thinking?

What is up with the lights on this thing??? Definitely not my taste... Looks a bit deformed... even has a sort of retarded look to it... I dont know... It just doesnt do anything for me... the model that YSSMAN posted is A LOT nicer IMO.... 👍
