HOLY COW!

Autoblog
We love mid-size sedans if for no other reason than buyers benefit from the incredibly high level of competition between each player in the segment, and Ford's just-revealed 2010 Fusion appears ready to compete. We only have one image, but it shows the Fusion's new face with an even bigger three-bar grille, nicely contoured hood, angry-eye headlights and a sharply redesigned lower bumper. There's also a new engine lineup with three mills to choose from. The first is an all-new Duratec 2.5L four-cylinder with 174 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque (up 14 hp/16 lb-ft from prior 2.3L). The second is a reworked version of the current 3.0L V6 with 19 more horsepower for a total of 240 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque. And finally Ford will be offering the Fusion with its new 3.5L V6 for 2010, which will make a class competitive 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. The best part? All three engines will be paired with Ford's 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission.

Ford hasn't revealed fuel economy numbers yet, but says the four-cylinder's fuel economy will go up a full 10% and the sixes between 4-6% thanks in large part to the new tranny. This will also be the year Ford introduces the Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid, which will feature the previously announced SmartGauge and can travel up to 47 mph in all-electric mode with a range of more than 700 miles. Unfortunately, it appears that the 2010 Fusion won't be available with any turbocharged, direct-inject EcoBoost powertrains, but the new engines and transmission, along with the nose job, are a big step forward for Ford's already competitive Fusion.

AUTOBLOG, JALOPNIK

Wow! I am thoroughly impressed! While the loss of a manual is unfortunate, that is what Mazda is for, and the choice of six-speed automatics makes up for it in the end. It looks as though Ford has quickly taken away a lot of favorite cars for me from GM, and that is not a good sign.

BTW: No EcoBoost sucks.

Wonder if they could possibly make the grille any bigger?

Damn. I was getting ready to post this.

Am I the only one who sees Saab in the new front end of the Fusion? Overall I don't like it. It makes me think that they tried to take the Mach Three and combine it with the Kinetic.
Also, here is the interior:

Look at that screen!

EcoBoost was what I was banking on. Or at least a 6 speed manual with the 3.5L. I don't know if I'd ever get one now, but I've always liked the looks of it. I almost bought one a few years ago after going to a Ford dealer to look at an 04 Mach 1.

The Mach 3 is a good looking razor. Whats the big deal?

Seriously though, I agree, but I like it.

Lose that grille, please. Or at least offer a faux-aluminum or pearl-black option.

But I wanted the Mondeooooooo..........

I guess it looks a bit more modern, but, geez, lose the freakin' razor, man.

That'd be much better.

I'm not sure the weak engine would go very well with a 6 speed auto. It would be interesting to see how those two matched up... I wouldn't be surprised to see the 6at run well with the other engines but with the weaker one I'd expect underwhelming results.
All that said, I like the re-style more than the last one but I agree with others here when I say it could use some revision.

Apparantly the 2.5 will be offered with a manual, just like on the Mazda 6:
TTAC
To get answers to some of your questions, I got in touch with one of the Ford PR folks, but rather than hide my findings in comments, we’ll post them here.
—The 2.5 liter 4-cylinder model will be available with a manual transmission, contrary to my previous expectations. For the other 98% of buyers, it’s a 6-speed auto.
—AWD will still be available , on the 3.0 and 3.5 V6 cars (proving Berkowitz’s guesses wrong again).
—The manumatic will be controlled with a +/- system on the gear lever base, not steering wheel buttons.
—On sale date is the nebulous “First Quarter 2009.” Considering that nobody is going to be buying any cars this November, December, January, I don’t think it matters much that the refreshed Fusion isn’t going on sale for a few months.
—Ford is hoping/anticipating/guessing that the hybrid version will deliver best in class fuel economy. For reference, the Camry Hybrid is rated at 33/34.
—Hybrid version will have slick/gimmicky SmartGauge system, two LCD screens surrounding the analog speedo gauge, to show instant fuel economy, etc. It’s good marketing to make hybrid drivers feel like they have a special car (i.e. the Prius’s space cadet interior).
—Interior will be improved. I’ve tossed in one of KGP/Jalopnik’s spy photos of it into the gallery. SYNC will be available with or without the nav system.
—A pic from Automobile Magazine of the Milan hybrid sans-camo is also in the gallery.
Linky (including a bunch of awesome pictures showing off the guages).

I love it. And that interior is still sexy. I was hoping for EcoBoost but will not complain with the new transmission and engine choices. Go Ford!

The nose looks like a bad cross between a Transformer and a razor.

Apparently Ford is designing all of their new US market cars to look like Tonka trucks.

That makes me feel better. After driving the 2006 Fusion SE with a stick, I'd be disappointed if there wasn't a followup. Its a sweetheart of a car even in its current form, but with all of the improvements, it will be a top-notch competitor for the Accord and Camry (not that the Camry is worth much anyway). Actually, it makes me wonder what their target car was...

What they should do for the grille is paint the top and bottom bars the body color, then just keep the center bar chrome.

I hate hate hate that sandpaper effect car makers keep using on the dashboard plastics.

You mean you don't like having your car look cheap and dated when it rolls off the dealer lot? Are you a Communist?

My guess is that it only looks bad in the photograph, the Fusion previous to this has a very well-done cabin (for an American car).

I refuse to yield to these carmakes who do this. Peugeot are by far the worst offenser, but Mazda and Vauxhall have not been beyond reproach over the years. If it resembles the arse end of a rhino, don't use it!

Offer different colored bars so you can create your own tricolor flag on the grille? That could get strange...

...Yes. I think its semi-official. I like this better than the Malibu. Don't tell GM...

I guess I'd much rather take a Fusion than a Milan.

The fusion actually looks pretty good.

Needs to lose the razor though. I'm not sure what they could replace it with, but the razor needs to go.

That Milan... kill it. Kill it with fire.

Ford could have at least given us a GILLETTE FUSION instead of a damn Mach 3!

The Milan makes sense this upcoming year because its a much different design. 👍

I agree. The Ford Motor Company(mazda+volvo) is my favorite of the big 3.

Just by looking at the fusion, if we do get the Euro Focus along with the Fiesta, GM's low range is done for.
Now if we only got the Falcon and a Lincoln "CTS Fighter" 💡

I guess I'd much rather take a Fusion than a Milan.

I think that goes without saying, but that doesn't make the Milan an absolute dog either. I quite like the current one, and when they keep telling me that with $2000 down that I can have one for $199 a month, that's a tantalizing deal. Although my guess is that every ounce of "fun" has been sucked out of the car this time.

dear god they're both hideous :yuck:
