From Edmunds Inside Line:

There's a refresh on the way for the 2008 Porsche Cayenne, but with our latest photo illustrations you can see what's in store for the full redesign expected in 2010. The drawings were penned after consulting with sources close to Porsche's Weissach design center.

The 2010 Porsche Cayenne will be the first full redesign of the surprisingly popular German sport-utility and, according to our sources, the styling direction will lean toward a sleeker, less utilitarian shape. To get that look, the next-generation Cayenne will feature a more steeply raked windshield, shorter greenhouse and blacked-out B- and C-pillars. The rear end will look more like Infiniti's FX45 sport-ute thanks to gentle curves in place of the current Cayenne's heavy-looking, upright D-pillars.

Passenger space inside won't increase much, but Porsche has to make sure this Cayenne offers some kind of packaging advantage over the Panamera sedan that will debut in 2009. Although the Panamera is expected to be a low slung 4-door "coupe," it will use the same engines as the Cayenne and may very well offer all-wheel drive as well. The Cayenne's higher seating position and extra cargo room might still draw SUV lovers, but it will no longer be the only Porsche for those looking for a more spacious 911.

Personally, I think it looks much better than the current one, even though the front seems like it could swallow and slice a whole deer.

I don't like that, though it's still far to early to make an opinion on the car, which may well look very different.

EDIT: That said, it does look better than the current one.

IMO, Porsche needs to return to what they've done best: building sports cars. I'd rather see a newer version of the 914 than this thing.

However, since they're probably not going to revert to their roots, I do like the initial sketch. If they keep it close to that design, they'll have one nice-looking car on their hands.

I agree.

I can understand a company wanting to branch out and make money in other areas of auto engineering, but with a company like Porche, a name wildy known for it sports cars, in my opinion should stick to that formula which has found them so much success.

They just changed the lights.

That's weird.

Seems like more than just the lights have been changed to me.

The face mirrors the changes in the 997 911, most notably with the Turbo in that it has the same strip of LED "fog lights". While I'm still no fan of the concept of a Porsche SUV, this is a marked improvement for what should be the "Porsche of SUVs". Definitely more Porsche-like in proportions and silhouette.

I like the new look more, but still who needs a Porsche CUV (SUV) in London or any cities.

That looks much better. Now, if they make it just as offroad- and onroad-capable as the last one, they'll have a true uberwagen on their hands. :sly:

They have that, it's caled the Boxster.

The Boxster has two extra cylinders and is much more expensive than a modern-day 914 could be.

My idea of a 914 successor would be something that's about the same size as a TT/Golf or smaller, with a (most likely VW-sourced) four-cylinder mid-mounted engine and a targa top. They could sell it for $25000-$30000.

I was simply pointing out how lazy Porsche's designers are. Sure, it's a complete redesign, but I doubt that the average poser would realise it's a new version.

Oh no! Porsche has turned my favorite SUV into crap, it looks like the rear of and R-Class super-glued to the front of a carrera.

I have mixed feelings, i like the retro styling of the headlamps as of the 993 and the overall modern theme, but SUV's are meant for off-roading and i dont think the Cayenne is capable of that.

While the presence of the Cayenne in Porsche's lineup (certainly not its profitability though) and its styling are somewhat debatable, I don't think much people are questioning their off-road abilities, when they're not wearing low profile performance tires.

It might not be a Jeep TJ or a H1, but it's well above average in terms of off-road capabilities.

I'm so glad to see people taking their Cayennes off-road...and here I thought the journalists were the only ones trying it out.

Some guys modified their 911's for severe off-roading, and they vastly outperformed midsize and large SUV's on the trail. I'm not at all suprised that the cayenne is a good offroad performer.

Hey, Porsche actually has rally heritage. It's just that modern Porsches are just too damn expensive for it.

RE: 914? Just wait. It'll be an MR Volkswagen with a turbo four pot and a Boxster chassis. Don't expect Porsche to go that far downmarket under their own name. :D

The sketches look rather ok but the headlights need revising. I appreciate that they are trying to keep it closer to the 'real' Porsche styling rather than what they did with the original Cayenne, but it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the car.

Where I live the old 914 was sold under the name VWPorsche, that sais enough. Although I like the 914, it's a small sportscar made by Porsche & VW and was to be a Volkswagen. Not a bad car, but not a true Porsche.

Agreed !... Much much better than the current one !..

I don't agree. Since when has Porsche not been able to make the best performance SUV available? Didn't they introduce that segment into the mainstream market?

And Porsche's overall global sales increased by what 3-digit percentage thanks to the Cayenne?

Porsche, you've always loved making tons of money. Do it again. Blow us all away again.
