I thought Speed's coverage was very good, considering that they're usually crap. For starters, they cared enough to actually send their play by play team to the event, which is more than they do for F1. And when it got down to decision time, they stuck with the action save for a few relevant interviews (with Skaife and Percat) and were generally on the ball. Very clearly they've sized up the various touring-car series and decided that of them all, V8 Supercars deserves much more attention. Bodes well for the commercial prospects of the series, given the Murdoch empire's reach.

The first thing I noticed about the SPEED coverage was that they spotted Steven Richards bogging down at the start. Channel 7, the Australian broadcaster, didn't even pick up on it until Mark Winterbottom told them after the first round of stops (Richards did a double-stint).

I also found it funny that the commentators were identifying cars based on their sponsors, and then explaining who their sponsors were by giving an American example (I quite liked the explanation that "'Fair Dinkum' is Australian for a fair deal"). I suppose that's how they do it in NASCAR.

I mentioned in my blog that the biggest flaw of the Speed coverage was "boogity..." well, you know the rest. There isn't going to be any serious agreement, but I don't think you have to Americanize the coverage just to appease to the American fans. A dream weekend would be for the commenting crew to be Leigh Diffey and Marcos Ambrose (if Ambrose didn't have NASCAR commitments). I guess to some people, you have to bring NASCAR flavor to get most American racing fans to care. Otherwise, the coverage was great.

Regardless, it was just a great weekend to see the Bathurst 1000 and LIVE. I can't even begin to explain just how jacked I was that I could see this race live on TV. Not streaming media, not Twitter updates, not highlight shows... LIVE TV. It was just incredible. Only thing more incredible is if I was at Mount Panorama in person seeing the race live.

The one I liked was the offered allusion for "Bottle-O." The mention of "ABC stores" translated perfectly where I live (North Carolina, where it means Alcoholic Beverage Control) but likely was a bit of a mystery in at least 30 other states. Then someone chimed in, "I call it a liquor store." Had to chuckle at that. :)

Re JohnBM01's preference for a Diffy/Ambrose team, no question they would have done better from a purist's standpoint, but having Waltrip in the booth and more importantly winning him over was huge. I imagine when he gets back to the US he'll be talking up the series to anybody and everybody, and given his roots in NASCAR, what he says will have legs. And remember, it could've gone the other way. He as much as said he'd been skeptical about the idea of a 1000km road race and I don't think he'd have been enthusiastic if Whincup had won going away, which was my expectation for the result going in.

Probably the one thing that SPEED did better than the channel 7 guys.

Neil Crompton is a V8 Supercars wizard and he goes into so much detail about things during races. I watched a short video of the SPEED coverage including the start and their commentating ruined it for me. Apart from that BOOGITY BOOGITY crap which I cringed at the way they talk about things made the race seem weird. Their commentating suit the high speed intense action of NASCAR but it was weird with the V8supercars.

The channel 7 commentators with Skaifey and Crompo in the hotseat is the best combo in world motorsport. They know so much and they get along so well constantly joking with eachother and constantly informing the viewer of every single detail during a race.

Combined with Larko on the scene getting up close and personal with the team garages and pitstops etc it does not get any better.

TiZzla
Hahaha he's good but not as clued up as the others.

He's better at making the big calls like when somebody wins, which he does.

Or informing us of welfare cheats and the best places to buy groceries. He should stick to Today Tonight.

He cant even see where we're headed yet he aint slowing down. That is impossible!

That video is brilliant.

Yes, very funny. I believe DW had to use the mens room after that lap.

I thoroughly enjoyed this race. First time I've seen the Bathurst 1000 thanks to Speed channel. The coverage and broadcast on Speed was top notch.👍

Looking forward to when the V8's come to the US in a few years.
