so why not dispense with the bad parts of SUV ownership as well?
Mazda did that. I don't see any negatives with the CX-5. Assuming it has decent reliability (new model...who knows...), it will cost the same to own and operate as a basic car. AWD was mandatory on my checklist, so I got it, but I won't chastise anyone who buys a FWD-only version. Since it is as practical and efficient as a car, it just comes down to personal choice.

Boo. One wheel off the ground isn't enough. Give her more grip and let's see some two-wheeling action!

Corners just like a Mazda2, I see! :D

I'm not sure. SkyActive is basically direct injection mixed with high compression(at high rpm), new piston dome shape, a 5th or 6th injector to help with combustion even further, then a purty 4-2-1 exhaust manifold. Intake valves stay open longer like in Atkinson engines. That's all I found for now.

The high compression means no turbocharging (yet), the fact that the engine relies on the bespoke 4-2-1 manifold for proper scavenging means that poorly designed exhaust mods may cause detonation... and a poorly designed intake might blow up the engine, most aftermarket tuners won't want to touch the cams... possibly COBB could make a go at squeezing a little bit more hp out of a tune, but this is unknown territory for most aftermarket tuners... so I don't see much in the way of aftermarket support for the next few months, at least.

I ask Mazda to drop the compression ratio enough so a turbo can be dropped in.

Call it the Mazdaspeed CX5 and price it at around $25-27000.

I don't know why, but in my mind every 2.0 liter four banger needs to be turboed. Damn you WRC?

Mazda put this photo up on their facebook with the title "Mazda CX-5 Top Secret Testing"

Peripheral port 13b rotor housing. Hmmmmm

The end plate looks a bit strange too. Not sure what to make of it.

Hurray! Mazda dealership called, car will be delivered the week of May 26th, rather than early/mid July.

Rotary version of CX-5 incoming?

I've always liked Mazda's interiors. Some people will say they are bland, but I prefer the dark colors and always liked their layouts.

Since the 2003 Mazda 6 was launched, their entire lineup has had really nice interiors.

Not very different, but it's already a handsome small CUV, so not a whole lot really needs to be changed, IMO.

I really wish the blade was thicker like the new 6. A thicker blade would really enhance the Japanese samurai look.

Could always use a little more Japanese steel. Hattori Honzo style.

My wife and I actually picked one of these up. I am not one to harp on any product, unless it's an STi or Forza, but this vehicle really has some great handling dynamics. We get great mpg's, the interior is top notch, and the comfort level is extraordinary.

I would have never thought about it until I saw some reviews online so we went to test drive the grand touring AWD 2.5. I was sold, obviously the salesman had no idea what the hell he was talking about, but I did my due diligence in researching the vehicle beforehand.

It has more power than you would think considering it;s weight and that it's a 4cyl, but from 2-3k it responds very well, highway cruising and merging is seamless, gets to 60+ with ease.

Interior refinement is very impressive, the seats are very very comfortable. and the feel of the cabin and it's materials say this vehicle should be much more expensive than it is.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents here. Great CUV and I love driving it whenever I get the chance. Oh forgot to mention, AWESOME Bose sound system..I am an audiophile and this system is pretty damn cool, much better than anything I could have imagined.

My conclusion is that this car surpassed every pre-concieved notion I had about it! Kudos Mazda!
