2014 BMW M3/M4, will it be tri turbo or not? Answer is sort of

How can you tell what the engine sounds like? The stereo is off.

Regarding response... I kind of see where Kent is coming from. The STI now isn't really that much worse than most regular cars. In fact, with the electronic throttles on most cars nowadays, it's about average. Very few engines have that direct, linear relationship between the pedal and throttle, nowadays.

It makes me sad, really. I have a feeling it may even be a deal breaker on the FR-S when it comes time to buy one. I find it exceedingly difficult to drive a car quickly that doesn't react when I command it.

I imagine they'd have made an effort there. Mazda managed to keep the throttle responsive on the MX5, even with an E-Throttle, and Toyota always tweaks their throttle mapping to provide good off-idle response.

FRS throttle response is not as bad as the STI.
New engine, new tech, no backroom stupidity necessary to reach mpg figures.

From Bimmerpost..

Still not exactly obvious how many turbos, but..

Inside line posted that picture with words like "inline 6" and "twin turbo."
Sounds good, looks like they are gett all of the engine bay out of that one! 👍

It's probably just not put on yet since they are still at testing stages, no need for decorations. They can easily just put it on the valve cover.

That really does sound like a slow shift compared to the modern paddle shifters, I'm inclined to say it's a standard manual transmission. Car sounds great, too bad the price is out of my range. :ouch:
Maybe down the road. :sly:

I agree, sounds nice. And like a manual. And turbocharged.

It should be pretty awesome, I think the return to an I-6 is good.

I like the M4 even though I still don't understand what the purpose for it is. The M3 looks great too and sounds nice..

Honestly I was watching some videos of the M4 testing yesterday and really didn't enjoy the exhaust noise at all. Sounded a bit flat to me and uninspiring.

I've heard it first hand decelerating off-load, and it sounded pretty good to me, but I think it depends what style of exhaust note you like...

I wasn't being serious about the sound, but I now notice I didn't put a full ellipsis to try and indicate that. I absolutely agree with you on the sound.

What do you mean the purpose? BMW wants a 2 door version of the M3. That's this - the M4.

Meaning we went all these decades without one, meaning I don't know why they decided to build an M4, hence me putting my main focus on the M3 (hence why I started this thread). A simple explanation would have done just fine. Other than that, is there any other important reasons why they built the M4 and what class it is in?

No it doesn't answer it...

Also as a kid I wonder if the designer just tossed all his toys in a very untidy fashion and that is why we have this mess...

I'm glad I'm not a BMW certified technician.
