I hope it isn't a sign of things to come. We don't need $250,000 Mustangs that are underperforming maintenance nightmares like the namesake.

Its a one off. Its not going into production.

Well the be fair, the F-35 is only in LRIP and LM decided to develop and produce at the same time, for good or bad. Maintenance issues should go down as production goes up. While performance figures were cut a while back, it should still be able to cut open a flight of anything that's not F-22's or EF-2000's. And a sports car that can't be detected on radars has some advantages, though if you go fast enough they might cite you for speeding anyway.

The problem is many people don't see the projected development ever being better than it is (not sure why). Also people give it crap due to it's production delays and extended changes and the fact that it simulations it has been beat but 4.5 gens like the Eurofighter (so was the F-22) and on and on.

This concept though for a car, is no worse than Lamborghini centering a limited production car on the F-22
 
Wow, the I4 has the same compression as the V6. I'd love to see the torque curves of these engines.

Now just fingers crossed for good MPG numbers and better handling.
 
The GT hits 3700 now? So I guess we can expect the GT500 replacement to nearly hit 4000. Shame.

Also a bit surprising they've knocked 5hp off the V6 to keep some space between it and the Ecoboost, though I imagine the latter is rated conservatively.

I wouldn't rule that out yet. Being that the car gained weight, I would think the performance versions might be less if they strip out some stuff. 3,500lbs has been rumoured, and given that the base cars are already at that, it's entirely possible if they strip some things.
 
They'd have to strip quite a lot out to drop 200lbs off the GT weight, especially if you take into account the likely extra weight something like a GT500 replacement will be carrying around both under the hood and inside the wheel wells.

That's in addition to the fact the GT500 has never been a stripped-out approach - maybe a Boss 302 redux will go more hardcore in that sense, keeping more in line with the road-racer/track-day mentality, but the top dog pony? I'll put a fiver on it not even getting within 50lbs of the GT's weight.
 
This new GT350R might be the track car with the stripped weight me thinks, if that's what they are going to use as a Boss 302 continuation. The GT500, if that car comes about, might just be the pig it already is; there's really no way of knowing yet.
 
Even the lightest one is 1600kg.. But then again, the Ecoboost makes more power and torque than the Modular 4.6 while being bit lighter, so there's that. I'm more interested of the weight distribution now.

Which is what should have been the concern, because we knew this car with an I4 wasn't going to get below 3400-3500

Depends on the modular you are talking about. But yeah most of them it's more powerful than.

Ecoboost I4: 52/48
GT 5.0L: 53/47


That is a massive improvement over the outgoing 57/43 split of the 2014 model. the weight distribution of the 2015 model is the closest to a 50/50 split that any Mustang has ever come, ever.

Apparently, the new GT is "consistently faster" than the previous Boss 302 around a track, despite weighing more. The car was benchmarked against the BMW M3.

This comes thanks to numerous changes, including a lightweight aluminum hood/fender combo, the long awaited IRS and Torsen rear, and new control arm-mounted deflectors that create brake-cooling air channels, a la the Boss 302 Laguna Seca. We’re also told to expect the ’15 GT to offer “at least equal or better” raw numbers for stopping distance and skidpad grip when compared against the 302.

Well since Nissan has all but scrapped the IDx, I think an Ecoboost Mustang is now at the top of my next car shopping list. Should be able to get a nice used one in a couple years. Assuming someone else doesn't release something better before then.
