Hybriding is the best way to meet the strict emission laws in some countries, increases mpg and it also allows to get respectable performance out of the car. I can understand that many people are still sceptical about it, but overall it's the future and the general direction the manufacturers are going with this. It's not like they're electric cars or are less powerful.

I'm more suprised about the fact that it's going to be a targa, but that's a nice touch and will make it stand out. I just hope Nissan is going to wake up and start making their cars lighter, a 370Z or a GT-R are heavy compared to their newer competition (yes, I know the 370Z is a bit dated now). But when the car is going to be a targa, it means reinforcing the chassis, right? That could either mean a heavy car or they're finally get into the carbon game, which I'm all for!

Doesn't sound too bad to me. As long as the next Z a) looks good, b) sounds good and c) drives well, that's pretty much all it needs to accomplish.

A lot of manufacturers get hung up on paying direct homage to the cars that originally inspired them (*cough*modernmusclecars*cough*), and spend too little time making sure they try and replicate the reasons those cars were so well-received. For the Z, that means good performance for the money, great looks and a nimble chassis. Everything else is just icing.

This all depends on the system used, manufacture, etc. I know here at Nissan, pretty much everyone will tell you that the hybrid system they use on the QX60 (Supercharged 2.5L I-4 with electric motor) is really only a fancy start/stop system, and even then if you are running the A/C the motor won't shut off. The only reason they have this system is to meet emissions/mpg standards. The equivalent V6 models are so much better to drive...

That probably has to do with the overall refinement of the V6.
I'm going to guess that we're probably going to see a 2L (or smaller) turbocharged engine in pair with an electric motor, although the japanese like to go really low with their displacements sometimes, so maybe even something like a 1.4 or 1.6? Anyways, I'm stoked on the new Z. Took them way too long for a replacement/facelift in my opinion and I think that they can only improve upon the 370Z (which I always though to be a little bit meh compared to the 350Z)

I had a T-top 300ZX and it was pretty cool. I think the retractable roof would be too heavy and take up too much interior room. Let's see how they do.

Mercedes???

I'm having a little trouble believing Mercedes is building engines for Nissan. Nissan is perfectly capable of building their own engines. Why would Mercedes want one of their engines in a Nissan? I can't find any reliable websites reporting a Mercedes engine will be in it.

Nah. That's not happening.

I think Mercedes and Nissan have been working on stuff together for a while now. Or there were rumours of that, at least, so I wouldn't really be surprised if there was a Mercedes engine in the next Z car.

I'd throw "affordable" back on that pile. When the 350Z first showed up, it started under $27k, and seemed like a pretty good bit of value on the lower trims. Fast-forward to today, and it starts right at $30k. I'd love to see the new car go back to BRZ-like pricing, putting it a bit more in-line with the price of a Mustang EcoBoost than the Mustang GT.

All of which reminds me... Why haven't I looked at a used 350Z, recently?

Well they use our test track, so it's not so far fetched.

Juuuust testing the waters :D

But a smaller lighter Z I will always welcome. The 350 wasnt my favourite shape, even if it handled good. I do like the current version because it is a bit shorter. Can't wait to see the next version.

Trust me I'm sure you weren't the only one that was thinking it I was too, hence why I knew where you were going.

The S shift thing. Is that here to stay? Are we going to see a conventional, actual "do it all yourself" manual? An 8 speed manual? Is this a test mule for the iDx power plant? I just get a bit hyped with possibilities from NISSAN.

Mercedes and Nissan/Renault have been working together for a long time now. The OM607 (A/B/GLA 180 CDI) has been developed by Merc and Renault together. iirc a Citan is just a rebadged Renault Kangoo.

I don't believe this rumour too, but a 370z with a M133 (A45 AMG engine) sounds like fun to me!

The L-series engines in the original Z were derived from a Mercedes-Benz design.
'Nissan L Engine' -- Wikipedia
In 1966 Prince Motor Company merged with Nissan. At the time of the merger, Prince was licensed to produce copies of [Mercedes-Benz] four- and six-cylinder engines. Prince Motor Company later refined the design such that it no longer needed licensing. The engine still resembles a Mercedes in many ways, particularly the valve train.

I think the thing that's driving 370z sales down is not the their looks or performance but the price. It's just priced too high. The article stated the price is expected to start at less than $60K; Nissan can't seriously expect the new Z35 sales to reflect the 350z's sales numbers when it released for less than $30K.

For me the appeal of a Z car is that it doesn't lead to financial ruin to own, looks good, goes well and doesn't cost several thousand dollars per year to run (I'm looking at you E46 M3!). I love my 350 and plan on picking up a second hand 370 in the future. I just hope Nissan doesn't price the new Z right out of it's market.

In Australia, it's not much the manufacturer can do about pricing. $60k for a Tribeca. $42k for a BR-Z. $72K when the S2000 was available. $60k+ for the current Z. I think the Z will have a hard road trying to beat the Mustang.
The BR-Z lost its first 3 free services this year. So new buyers have to hand over that money come service time. But, Brand New Z's off the lot, are for older drivers down here.

I do hope it sells well here in Australia.

Wow I knew your currency was pretty inflated to the rest of the world but those numbers especially for the BR-Z is just plain crazy.

Better off getting an 86 and changing the side vents to BR-Z versions and adding the spoiler/diffuser kit for $2k.

Check the prices of Falcons and V6 Commodores and Mazda6's. $40k! That's BMW money in the USofA.

A far cry from the $28999 sticker I saw, when the 350Z base model came out at Cox NISSAN in The Bronx.

Exactly my point the prices there are scary compared to here.

Here's a 2012 video where Jay Leno goes into the design house of the Z35. The way they were speaking and the sketches on the wall definitely seem to indicate a return to a long bonnet 240z style design.

Yes, I'm aware this is old news but I hadn't seen the video before and It's relevant to the thread.
