Here's how my Wednesday went.
The GT-R is good at Le Mans. It's a high speed track with mostly high speed corners, so it suits the Nissan a lot. My DR went in the highest it's ever been, so I saw it as a brilliant opportunity to get my first ever 200 point result. My practice races were largely useless for learning how to race in a pack. Even the A+ drivers I raced against were terrible, and I think every race I ran saw a bunch of people quit. I'm not sure what the point in that is, surely you'll still get something from practicing what the car is like in a race with fuel and tyres?
Slot One: I'm #20 and it's the highest scoring lobby I've ever been in, the top 2 positions are giving 200+ points. Cool. I match up with a French guy in a Citroen in qualifying who bumps me along the whole way, I start 5th. Things are fine until Indianapolis on the first lap where I get tagged by a Corvette and knocked off. The rest of the race is largely a shambles, with this being the most outrageous sequence of events:
Was this a deserved punt on my part? I was frustrated that the race I had such expectations for had gone so badly, then I was following this clown. Watching back it looks like he's trying to make sure people bump draft him but he's doing a really bad job of it, moving across really late. When it happened again coming out of the second chicane I decided then and there that he was going off. It's not something I've ever really done before but since we had a long run to the next corner I didn't feel like it was reactionary. What are your thoughts? Was it warranted?
Rest of the race was pretty tame, ended up in an okay battle for 10th with two cars I knew I shouldn't have been anywhere near. One of them said my livery was nice, so that was cool.
Slot Two: Went out in qualifying trying to chase a Corvette for slipstream, ended up losing it at the first chicane just as I was getting close. He got poll, I started 19th. I ended up ahead of him by the time we got to the straight for the first time. Finished 8th. Boring race.
Slot Three: Practiced qualifying before this one. Put in two straight 3:57.9s on my own. Went into the race, did a 3:57.9. Started 3rd. This was the race where the track limit penalties started popping up. The worst part was that it happened on three different places - the usual part of Dunlop, the inside of Tertre Rouge, the outside of Tertre Rouge, disaster. Still ended up in a 3-way fight for 3rd which turned into 7th after the last chicanes.
Was pretty deflated, sick and smelly after that race but decided I definitely could do better, so...
Slot Four: Went out in warm-up and immediately regretted it. Went out in qualifying and got a nice tow from an Aston who had a penalty on the straight, but went too deep at the hairpin and he caught back up. He helped me as much as he could on the rest of the lap but he ended up starting near the back, while I made it to 4th with a 58.0. Of course it's top 3 who can escape the rolling start at Le Mans so I was at a massive disadvantage with
@joetoml1n in 3rd in the AMG behind a Mustang and a Corvette.
The Mustang and the Merc both got penalties going into the first chicane and when they served them coming out of Arnage I got ahead of the Mercedes. We spent the next few laps bump drafting until we caught up to the Mustang. I bump drafted the Mustang until we were about 2 seconds behind the leader, but then we both got penalties at the Dunlop chicane and it settled as a battle for 2nd.
As I was following the Mustang I realised two things - I had no confidence in the GT-R coming out of Arnage, and I had much more confidence than either of the two cars through the Porsche curves. I was half-throttle at a point where the Mustang was tapping the brakes. If I was going to get a result I needed a lead coming out of Arnage. Here' s the final lap:
Every part of the straight the Mercedes was going off-line but I knew there was no point passing, so I just kept bumping and waiting for the right moment. On the straight up to Indianapolis I went for the move and got in front. The Mustang followed me and I saw them running wide in my mirror, and I knew 2nd was mine if I made it to the line. I did. I felt physically sick afterwards but it was so, so worth it after such a frustrating day. Some of the best racing I've ever had in the final slot at the highest level I've ever raced at (my DR is now 44k something, ridiculous) and my best ever result. What a time.
(Ed - and my apologies to
@GR33N - by the time I was in this last slot I was too focused for chat)
