2023 Honda Accord Officially Unveiled- Better or Blander than Before?

Just read prices for the new Accord. $65,000 Australian dollars. Holy guacamole!

It's going to be even rarer seeing these. Sales reports had last year's model at least than 150 in traffic! I don't know how well Accords are selling in the USA, but this may be a case where the Accord name transfers to or gets shared billing with an SUV version.

They are selling pretty well here...anecdotally I see more of them than the new Camry. I wish I didn't though, because I don't like them at all (despite my earlier posts more in favor of the design). Honda has had some good designs out lately, but the new Accord is not one of them. Swing and a miss.

I really have forgotten how flipped it is over here than in the USA. Camry and Mazda6(when it was selling) were the hot selling models and Accords were low volume. In its lifespan, Accord Euro sold more than the bigger Accord 75,000 to 52,000, respectively. Plus, the Euro was still selling well. Shame Japan cancelled it. The Civic is pretty much the halo car for JDM Honda. Though I did read a new Accord Type R rumour travelling the net.

As for the 2024 design, yeah, I can only guess it almost looks like the Gen 2 in the nose, but wow, it’s longer than a new A6! I’m so out of the Honda/Acura loop I forgot about the TLX and Integra. Re-educating myself.

I've been seeing a lot of Civics, but not a whole lot of the new Accord unless it's just been blending in.
 
I forgot this car existed until I seen one in a classic Toronto traffic jam a couple weeks back. It’s grown on me a bit, it’s invisible and I like that.
 
I bought a 2019 Camry during the pandemic and had to return it in a week because:
A) I couldn't adjust carplay while the car was moving, AT ALLLLLLLL
B) I couldn't turn on the circulate cabin air while the defrost is on. The amount of exhaust fumes was unreal.
So sadly, I'll never touch another Toyota ever. Thankfully, I traded it in and didn't lose a penny cause used car prices were just starting to go nuts :lol:

I've been in my Accord ever since and I don't have any complaints. I think it's intentional that Honda made the choices they did in the specs and design of the car. It's not like they took some 911 frame and slapped a couple rear doors on it, resulting in a watered down car and branding. It's a tall man's Civic and family car.

The newer Civics are nearly as big as Accords anyway, makes them hard to distinguish between one another.

IMO, The Acura is the better accord, espceially in that Type S variant with the funny quad pipes, it's more sporty pace, feel and styling appeals better to me and Honda could have pitched it like a Guilia Rivalling car, its just a bloody shame neither are sold in the UK, bloody hell!

If Ford and Vauxhall can't sell whatever a potential 2024 Mondeo or Insignia would be, Honda isn't likely to shift any Accords in this day and age. Mazda no longer has a 6, Jaguar has just dropped the XE. It's just not a fashionable size segment right now. Especially as BMW and Merc do saloon versions of their size-smaller 1/2-series and A-class as well as the Audi A3, which are probably roomy enough for those who prefer what a saloon offers over a hatchback or SUV.
 
The TLX is on it’s own platform. I don’t think they share anything other than interior bits.
 
Hona is testing an EV wrapped in Accord clothing. Curiously, the author here seems to be fooled by the optical illusion.

They mention the shorter overhangs front and rear and suggest that they've been shortened. But no! This car hasn't been shortened an inch as far as I can tell. Remember that it's an EV testbed - what has happened is the wheel and tire package is a much larger diameter than stock, the wheel arches are much larger (looks like 2-3 inches taller in front), and the wheelbase has been extended several inches in both directions, especially the front axle, which is why the car now has much better proportions and looks much smaller. Look at the wheel arch gap behind the front wheel - the front wheel has moved so far forward (maybe 4 inches or more I'd guess) that this large diameter tire still has a noticeably larger gap on its backside than factory. The rear wheel has moved rearward just an inch or two which makes its front ends appear about the same place as a factory tire would sit. Combine that extended wheelbase with much larger wheel and tire package, a wider track, and wider body flares, and you get a much smaller and more athletic looking car which is actually the same length as before. I mean, we all know how well this trick works on the Ioniq 5 which looks tiny but is actually a midsize SUV.

Come on Honda sell this Europe side, the prototype looks cool in black, we need a Hybrid Type R Accord, to blast aorund the streets, Saloons need to make a comeback sod ugly SUVS!!

Four-door sedans do seem to be back on the rise. Younger owners are wanting the fuel economy, comfort and space saloons offer. No doubt EV sedans are helping those numbers, but even used sedans are being picked up.
I do find it interesting with the number of some of us gtplanet members that have recently purchased new, used and/or classic sedans.

We're a microcosm of car enthusiasts.

That said, I'm kind of throwing off the trend you're seeing - of my three cars, one is a full-size 4x4 and the other is an AWD crossover.
 
It’s funny because my 24 year old daughter still has her first car, a first-Gen Honda HR-V. She just bought a first-Gen Hyundai ix35. Her partner(25 years old) drives a Navara Warrior(but he also has his 1970 XW Falcon GT getting restored).

I told her about the sedan trend for young buyers and she said those are old people’s cars. I said actually, the SUVs are the old people’s cars because it’s easier to get in and out with their old hips. :lol:
 
The only people I see driving sedans are apparently single males (of various ages) and uber/lyft drivers.
 
Had a look at past Car & Driver tests of the Accord. Wanted to see how the Euro/TSX(CL9) compares to the new cars. Pretty interesting the CL9 is heavier than the comparable 1.5T. Performance is nearly identical 20 years later, but with a manual, the CL9 of course lacks in mid-range acceleration. That 1.5T fuel economy couldn’t be more spot compared to my 2.4L CL9. Last week I did a drive down to Victoria for Christmas. From my place to my daughter’s place was 1,063km/660miles. My tank lasted 945km/587miles.



Other than city driving fuel economy, there’s really no incentive for me to buy a new Accord. My Euro is not equipped with navigation or Apple CarPlay, but I use a $30 12V Bluetooth adapter for my music. At $64,900AUD(for the only model available in Australia 2.0 Hybrid), the 2025 Accord is more than eight times what I paid for my car. No way do I see a benefit in buying the new Accord(or any new sedan really) when mine does everything pretty much the same. Plus, my car is solid as a rock(much thanks to the original owner doing about 5,000km/year for her last 13 years of 18 years of ownership, as per the logbook entries).

I think this is a problem all the car companies are running into right now, and a reason two giant companies, Honda and Nissan, need help. We've readly reached and arguably passed peak car. From here on out everything is just going to get more miserable. More efficiently engineered, yes, but also more complicated and expensive to work on. The past twenty years is full of cars that do the job of being cars very well, some of which are very nice, are considerably cheaper, and in some cases more fun to drive.

Exactly. After the Renault Megane we had, it was hard to find cars with character and deliver what we needed for some years. A couple vans we liked would have been choice. Then, our needs changed.
A few cars like the GT86, Swift Sport and Jimny were on the list. Then, again, like you said, what cars are fun for the money? My wife wanted a fun daily. I wanted a daily to play with. There are more cars from the past that offer all that we'd both want and need.

It's funny, on another tangent. I didn't even mention to my wife, but she's been showing me manual 5-series and 190 Es that she knows suit me. Not many in Australia, but I appreciate that.
 
The widebody kit makes it look like a V8 Supercars Falcon lol.
 
Now that Honda/Acura has axed the genuinely pretty awesome TLX from the US Market, they should give the Accord the 2.0T and 3.0TT powerplants. An Accord Type R with the 355hp V6 and AWD would be pretty damn sweet.

If Acura can't even sell the TLX - I assume it's getting replaced with something with a name - then it should simply be shuttered and Honda should do exactly what you've said, create Type Rs of the Accord and debut a new rwd sports car. When your low-spec brand is the one famous for performance cars, it doesn't really make much sense for the high-spec brand to develop performance cars with less cachet. Lexus was successful because it made boring pure luxury cars, something Toyota did not do. Merc AMG, BMW M, Audi RS, those have always been a single brand. Lexus's F series failed, and now Toyota itself is the one making performance models, and they even declined to give the next flagship to Lexus altogether.

I really don't think Acura has a future, same for Infinit. Hyundai is shooting for the moon with Genesis, but as someone who has witnessed every minute of the rise of Hyundai I can assure you that none of their three brands have any cachet or reputation or expectations to uphold.

And Accord Type R is something a lot of millennial dads would get with.

Infiniti seems pretty doomed right now, but I see a lot of RDX/MDX out there. Even the Integra seems to be selling pretty well.
 
Those fake luxury brands aren't going anywhere. Acura is still moving a ton of SUVs and Infiniti actually has a niche market in the middle east because of how popular QX80 is.

Regular-ass cars that are a little more premium, okay, fine. But they need to drop the performance image of Acura. They've tried to give Acura the flagships for so long, everything from the original NSX to the ITR to the...nothing again until the next NSX, to the ITS, and the constant since its inception motorsports sponsorship, at the cost of Honda's entire motorsports image in the north American market, and for nothing. All of that "performance" marketing was nothing but life support for a stupid brand.

It's like Honda's leadership have no ****ing clue what "Type R" means. Have they ever even heard of the badge? Are they aware. Do they have any idea that everybody on planet earth knows what a Type R is and a good portion of them would buy one? I just don't understand it.

Gotta be honest here, I think regardless of quality or lineage or anything tangible, of all the Japanese brands, Honda is the stupidest one. It's a stupid company and they make stupid decisions and I'm not sure what for. They make everything that everybody needs and they sell well because they're good, but they don't make anything that anybody wants, and they almost purposefully refuse to do so. It was like breaking legs to convince them to sell a CTR in America, almost like they were waiting for us to just import them all instead. They only beat the craze by a few years. ATR, nah nobody except every car guy dad wants one of those, there's no money to be made on that. S2000 successor? Terrible car, nobody bought one, nobody wants one, prices aren't going up, don't worry about it! CRV Type R? I just can't possibly imagine such a silly vehicle selling to suburban couples in the 2020s (Macan Turbo drives by in the background).

It's like Honda is allergic to making money and has no source of market data or enthusiast connection.
 
Yeah I couldn’t understand why they’d downplay the big H for the big A. Whether USA didn’t care for Formula One, the Big H sure did care about their R/RR/RRRRRRR bike sales in the USA.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think California emissions were to blame for the lack of early Type R cars in the USA before the Integra. I nearly think the V6 pretty much killed the notion of selling a race car for the street next to a family car that would beat it in a straight line. Probably the older market at the time wouldn’t have bought into them.

Not even defending the brand, but how would all years of the Accord Type R and Euro R have faired versus V6 Accords? Let’s say the CL9 Accord 2.4 slots between the old 2.3 LX I had and the V6 models. I’d feel the CL9 is the overall superior car, but trying to match the price range of the USA Accord might require the various engine stages of the 2.4 from K24A3, K24A2 and K24A. Would the USA do that? Would the USA have retooled the factories to build them? That’s just the one model.

I guess Accord Type R could have been made from the CD model beginning with the H22 engine. Yet again, that blasted V6 would appeal more to the USA buyers.
