And there's the first goal!
We may only be 8 minutes in but South Africa already look outclassed here, can Mexico run up a big score here

South Africa was all over the place and not in real contention for the win, but there were quite a lot of missed opportunities to blow this game wide open, looked like they didn't really want to risk receiving any goals, game plan looked alright but the execution in SA's penalty area was a bit questionable

I felt this was the game to gain an upper hand in Goal Difference, something Czechia and South Korea won't refrain from trying

There were four red cards in the entire 2022 Qatar World Cup, there has been already three here in the first game.

South Korea beat Czechia 2-1 in the early hours game, Korea had to come from behind to win in a game which I heard they deserved to win, I didn't stay up to watch it.

Today's games are one in which the other co-hosts get their tournaments up and running, Canada face Bosnia in Toronto before US v Paraguay in Los Angeles.

Yeah, the time zones is a shame... But it's been the other way around more often I'd say. For sure more of a problem for the South American fans then the 'newer' USA fans?

Then again only matches I (as a Belgian) would possibly watch that are in the middle of the night/early bird:
Mexico - South Korea -> will probably decide group winner.
Norway - Senegal -> important depending on France..
Spain - Uruguay -> decides group winner.. Possible opponent for Belgium in the quarter final (if if if)
New Zealand - Belgium -> obvious reasons.

group stage that is...

BBC Scotland's build-up to the game starts at 9am tomorrow... :scared: Not sure what they are going to talk about for 17 HOURS, but never mind.

It's such a pity that the K.O. is 2am - the opening game of France '98 was a memorable moment, and it makes me sad that for the vast majority of people, it won't be possible to enjoy the match in a pub atmosphere, but I hope there are plenty of watch parties tomorrow night - my mate is having one, but I won't be attending - however, with the Le Mans 24h on at the same time, I may try and get some early sleep so I can be up during the game.

Two goals for a player born in Brookyln (because an airline wouldn't let his heavily pregnant mother fly) to Nigerian parents who then took him to the UK when he was a month old where he grew up through youth football into Arsenal before moving to Ligue 1 when he was 22.

Wonder if the administration will like this birthright citizen. For now.

Yeah a great performance by USA, perfect way to start their tournament off.

Canada and Bosnia finished 1-1 in the other game, today its Qatar v Switzerland in San Francisco before Brazil v Morocco in a pretty big game in New York/New Jersey.

It is truly wonderful to enjoy yet another World Cup completely free of Italy, who have brilliantly managed to miss qualification for the third consecutive time. In any case, I will be backing Scotland, eagerly awaiting the match against Haiti...

I've also been quite entertained by the USA; their attack is an absolute weapon, but their defense... well, let’s just say it’s a work in progress.

It's so weird that they call it New York/New Jersey. MetLife is entirely in New Jersey and I will die on the hill that New York only has one NFL team. Even the San Francisco one is kind of odd too since it's more or less in San Jose.

If they're just going to remove the stadium names then at least rename them where they actually are.

In a few years we will have the Northwest Indiana Bears.

Beautiful goal right at the end by Qatar.

I'm happy my son is actually into this and asking a million questions about how soccer works. It's made watching these games fun.

With everyone drawing 1-1 in Group B, the teams are currently separated on disciplinary record and FIFA ranking.

Switzerland picked up one yellow card, Canada and Qatar two, and Bosnia & Herzegovina three. Canada's FIFA ranking is above Qatar's.

Brazil-Morocco also finished 1-1, Haiti-Scotland up next in Boston.

Probably the most competitive game so far.

It would be more beautiful if everyone in the whole set up had the integrity to resign and ban themselves from football, or just get sacked. I said in 2010 it would be 15-20 years before anything even starts to be resolved as we have to wait for all the old farts to retire or die

Scotland are clinging on here - Haiti have been by far the better side in the second half... 🫥

Apparently the Scottish team visited an orphanage in Haiti, with children affected by two earthquakes, several hurricanes, a cholera outbreak, and the effects of the junta.

You know the rest of the gag 😁

Scotland win their first World Cup game since 1990... pretty it most certainly was not - but we'll take it!! Scotland were frankly awful in the 2nd half, but we played well in the 1st and got the goal we needed.

Haiti deserved at least a drsw, but didn't take their numerous chances.

Brazil and Morocco will not be quaking in their boots...

Yep agree with everything you mention.

I've seen Scotland lose so many games over the years that they are 'supposed' to win that I was still half expecting Haiti to get a couple in the second half. To be fair they deserved to, still a win is a win and I don't recall Scotland ever being on the top of their group in a World Cup before so that's something.

Do you not recall us being top of our group, after the first game, in 1974 when you were a few months old?

We then went on to get put out without losing a game.

Great to be following the World Cup here too, I shall rocking into work and watching Holland game then Sweden from 8am, god for saken daft game starting times!
