I recently got gt5 prologue, and man are the graphics amazing, i spend almost as much time watching the replays as i do playing the game. Now i cant complain too much cause the tv i got was given to me for free anyways. But i can only imagine how much better it would look with a tv that supports 1080p or even 1080i, i could live with that. With my current tv i can't read the gauges, cars that are ahead in the distance are too blurry, and i dont have a wide enough view of the inside of the cars.

Im getting about $600 back from taxes, and was wondering if there is any decent HDTVs out there in that price range. Nothing too big, 30 inches or so would do the job. I've looked up a few but if anyone knows of some good deals your input would help:) so tell me what you use.
 
I can't stress this enough, contrast ratio is everything. I looked at a lot of TVs and the number one thing that stood out between a good tv and a so so tv was the contrast ratio. Mine's 7000:1 and it's pretty good.
 
How can anyone Play the PS3 without a Hi-Def TV, I don't know. Ok, money is a big factor we all know that but it's totaly worth it. If you luv gaming with the XB360 or PS3 the differrence between STD and HI-DEF is amazing.
 
Not to mention the full-size widescreen presentation!

I guess if you have never played, or even seen the games on a Hi-Def TV then it's not too bad, as in my case, but i can imagine the difference and it only makes me errkk more to get a new TV. Im sure once you go HD, you can't go back :)

that is what annoys me the most, i can't even see the mirrors without looking to the side views.

Money may be the only factor. I know it's worth it, I've seen the difference. But still...it's too expensive.
 
600 buks... save another 1000 and ull get a really decent rear projection TV.. that has 50+ inches.. worth the money, and worth those few extra months of play

That would only be true if each manufacture measured contrast in the same manner. There isn't a universal scale for contrast so it really becomes irrelevant in comparing one TV to the next.

7000:1 is actually low end on the scale but as you said it looks fine to you. I have a 15000:1 on my new TV but the most important factor to me was the 4ms response time and 120Hz frame rate which makes the picture fluid and smooth.

If it were that easy i would, but that would prolly take half a year, not to mention going on a strict ramen diet :yuck: if there is no good 1080 displays in that price range, i may just have to go for one with 720p :(

A 1200:1 contrast ratio TV is on the low end of the scale.

1200:1 Isn't low on the scale...thats just bottom feeding right there. I will not even bother with checking on how many HDTV's actually are manufactured with that abysmal number.

I'm just saying that an HDTV could have some great contrast numbers but look like crap because any fast motion would produce a blurtopic experience. I've purchased three 1080p LCD's in the past year and the best pictures have come from the processing rates and not the contrast ratio. It is not the measuring stick that anyone should use for purchasing an HDTV.

well you have time, you dont need 1080p just for Prologue, save up since by end of the year GT5 full version should come out so by then it be nice to have it.. winter is here.. how about u get a shovel n go for the neighbors.. that should make you some money...
i did that.. and in 2 days of work with my brother, i raised enough for a PS3 60gig, another sixaxis controller and a game and still left money for gas :)

720p is nice, but if u think about it it would be better to save up by end of the year and get a nicer bigger 1080p

for 1500 u can get this nice one

and for little more you can get bigger and little better ones :)

im telling you man, since everything is going HI def, BLURAY and etc,, 1080p is going to be a standard by end of the year and into few more following years... its worth the money, and its going to be a nice Xmas gift, or even thanksgiving gift for yourself :)

I would not buy the 1080p display unless it was 100" or more, you will not be able to see the difference on a 42" or 50" with 720p. 1080p is just soooo hyped.
Maybe you can spot the difference if you sit 1 meter away, maybe.

a 50+ inch is good enough... i have a 55 and u can see the difference rite of the when i switch between 720p and 1080p with my PS3

I have 4 pairs, but some of them have two colors, does that count. :)

so what im understanding is that i should maybe buy a tv with a 720 display if it's not around.. say 50 inches or so. maybe i should have went to the electronics forums for this question but i was just curious what other gt5 players had in mind and what works good for them.

btw i read that page that turbo1979 posted here and there is a lot of good information there, can't say i understand it all, but good none the less.

when i play GT5P i sit about 4 - 5 feet away.. watching movies.. around 8 feet
trust me you can tell... even when you play ur PC games... change ur resolutions and you can tell a lot too..

720p and 1080p is almost 2wice the resolution ;)

Ok, if you sit that close.
Are you able to see the difference from 8-9 feet, which INMO is a more normal viewing distance?
 
i bet you I can since my eye sight is 20/15 ;) hahaha
im going to experiment lil more
 
The result, three distinct groups emerged from this test of the twenty 1080p displays. All displays in the top group were plasma HDTVs. They all had a static resolution of 1080 lines and a measured motion resolution of 830-880 lines, depending on the specific display. The next group consisted of microdisplay rear projectors, static measured 1050-1080 (depending on the display) while motion resolution ranged of 610-780 lines. The bottom group were all the LCD flat panels, with a static resolution of 400 (one panel) to 1080 lines and motion rez coming in at 360 lines (one set tested) to 600 lines. Three of the LCDs tested were 120 Hz models (one was the Sony KDL-46XBR4 reviewed here), all 120 Hz models had 600 lines of motion resolution.

yeah, what he said... you pop for a PS3 & hookup a 'boobtube'? LMAO... Go LCD, progressive scan. I've got one 1080i & 720p, the720p is significantly sharper. Also, 'fanboys', go SONY. Mines Bravia 32". Everything they make is gold. Unless of course you can afford 1080p. My experience with DLP projection 52", RCA: 2 in two weeks, bad 'burn in', lamp out, poor image. There's a reason why stores have PS3 setups on LCD, as a WHOLE they ALL have outstanding contrast.
 
One thing to also be aware of when choosing a new TV for gaming is lag. An exaggerated example of lag is: you hit the brake, and then, a moment later you see the car on screen slow down. There was a time when some DLP's were really bad in the lag department. When I was looking for a TV it was hard to find any info on the lag of a certain model unfortunately. Turns out though that you can actually see it when TV's are side by and they are running the same signal, like in a store. Its easiest to determine which models have lag when you see when something move across the screen and then stop. If one TV gets there first it has less lag. I always wondered if the 120Hz models may have more lag because they have to wait until they get a second frame to create the interleaving frame.
I tested my Sony LCD TV side by side with my LCD PC monitor, both running off the HDMI of my PS3 in 720p. With GT running, i took a picture of the screens together, and you can compare the on screen timer that is running when driving. My LCD monitor had a tiny bit less lag than my TV.
 
Currently Im playing on a 480i 14' Sony TV and I must say that the game looks wonderful, not to mention Blu-ray movies which are twice as good as DVD's. Cant wait till I get my new HD LCD. :)
