I have been doing some research for a friend of mine who is in the market for a US Evo engine. I have found that the engine is a 4G63. This engine as I remember is also an eclips/talon engine because my friend has a '96 GS-t which has this engine. My question is what is the difference between an engine pulled from say, a Eclipse GSX and a lancer EVO?

the old mitsubishi starion (aus) used the 4G63, the engine has been around for quite awhile, i dont know what the differences are, exept starion is RWD

The 4g63 first put itself to good use (here in oz) in the 1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR4. It was an AWD sedan with about 148kW (198hp) it weighed about 1390kg and was a real rocket (for the day). It does have problems with turbo bearings at about 150k and ecu's like to die at the same time, find an engine that hasn't been thrashed and have some fun. The GSX would be a FWD devloped engine whereas the EVO mill would be newer and setup for AWD. Go for an EVO version.

The 4G63 engines in the US DSM's such as the T/E/L's and the EVO's share alot of the same parts, but there is one huge set back. The 4G63's in the EVO's are transversed to the US DSM's. The EVO's use the 7-bolt set up which was used in DSM's from late 92-99. This engine used weaker and smaller rods with a higher compression piston (8.5:1). The cranks were as well weaker and very prone to "crank walk" where the action of the pressure plate being compressed into the flywheel pushed inwards on the engine causing the crank to ware side to side play over time and if never corrected will eventually go out the side of your block. In the EVO engines, they corrected this problem with different transmissions and obviously bigger rods and thrust bearings but still using the 7-bolt engine. There is no way you can put an Evolution 4G63 into a T/E/L unless YOU can find a way to put your transmission on the drivers side of the car and flip the engine and whole driveline around.

the starion 2.0l turbo used a 4G63 from 1982-89 which is well before the galant in 91

I dont understand what your trying to say here. All GSX models were AWD, thats how they were distinguished. There is no difference with a FWD and AWD DSM engine other than the transmissions and drivelines, but for the blocks and heads, they are all the same.

yeah, first put itself to good use, Mitsubishi started winning rallies with the VR4 Galant before they bought out the award winning GSR and then finally the Evolution
