5 Design Icons

Postby Toplesscouple » Thu Mar 17, 2011 6:56 am
What are your icons? Those marvels of design that just make you go 'WOW'! :D

In no particular order, here are mine.

The first car I ever lusted after as a child.

Lamborghini-Miura-2.jpg

Another childhood memory

vulcan.jpg

The most beautiful bike in the world

Ducati916_profile_right.jpg

One of only two cars I've ever driven

a_1966_Jaguar_E-Type_Coupe.jpg

Should still be flying, imo

concord.jpg

Funny, but all of my icons seem to be vehicles of one kind or another! So as this is my thread, I'll cheat and throw in a sixth one that isn't! :D

chrysler.jpg

So what are your icons?

Lissa.

Up on my wall and had a scale model when I was a kid.(again)
porsche-959s-1988-red.jpg

Again, on my wall, almost exactly the same as this poster.
1940_g14.jpg

This car kickstarted my love for late 40's, early 50's American cars.

I daydreamed a lot about standing in between the 2 towers. Curse you, extremists.
wtc_640x480.jpg

subaru_impreza_STI41-ucc.jpg

I would only pick this car when I first played the GT1 demo... with fancy livery and all

bic.jpg

I loved drawing ever since I was a kid.

Futura.gif

Never stopped using Futura after I learned about it.

instruments_drums11.jpg

Not this specific brand, but Drum Kits as a whole.

W212%5B1%5D.jpg

Meteor Hammers or Rope Darts...
anyone capable of using one is truly admirable.

41_1965_911_coupe_1L.jpg

Well, the 911. What else is there to say about it? The car has remained true to its very early design for well over four decades, it doesn't get much more iconic than that.

mv-agusta-f4-veltro-3.jpg

This would be my choice for a "most beautiful bike in the world". Always been a fan of the MV Agusta F4...

1287740238.jpg

To me, this is one of the most icons firearms ever. I can't even specify why, but I don't know anyone who doesn't know it (women aside) - although it's typically just called "The Baretta".

lamborghini-aventador-lp700-4.jpg

Easily the most interesting, most radical, most daring and most refreshing car design in recent yeas, as far as I am concerned. Other manufacturers should looks a bit to Lamborghini in that regard, in my opinion.

deadmau5.jpg

I'm biased due to liking his music, but I think deadmau5's stage costume is one of the best ones ever... I love the simplicity and, yet, craziness behind it.

The puma logo was one of the first logos I ever saw. It was on a friend's key chain.
1310456781.gif

The apple logo was one that really hit me as well

apple-logo_1.png

The petronas towers were always printed in my memory from watching documentaries about them.
petro.jpg

European Trucks
DAF.jpg

And finally one of the things I thought were as cool as hell.

001-21522~World-Trade-Center-with-Statue-of-Liberty-Posters.jpg

I wanted to go on the roof of that soo bad. No there's no chance. Another childhood dream ruined is what you could say.

The beauty, the speed, and the mechanics of this thing are awe inspiring.
0420942.jpg

Something this big managing flight is just incredible.
ThrustSSC.jpg

The speeds this thing can reach on land are just mind boggling.
Space-Shuttle.jpg

Contains all of the delicate equipment for operating in a 0G vacuum, and reenters our atmosphere at 17,000mph. Only to be fixed up to do it all again.
hummerh1.jpg

IMO it's a beautiful thing, and it's probably one of the most versatile land vehicles in the world.

Loved this ever since I was just about two, and still love it to this day.

Can't be separated. I've loved the Violin ever since I've heard it's elegant sound..

I've always wanted to visit here, at least just once.

Photography has always been an interest of mine.

I also have a love for Mountain Passes, too.

It has to be the most iconic commercial airliner/cargo transport plane in existence.

The worlds most recognisable assault rifle (surely?)

ferrari-f40.jpg

This happened to be the first supercar I ever saw as a young child.

Burj-Al-Arab-1.jpg

The number of programs I've watched concerning the construction of the Burj Al Arab Hotel is, well, far more than I can remember.

The_Iron_Bridge_-_geograph.org.uk_-_224230.jpg

Living near such a well known bridge means that I can pretty much go and see it whenever I want.

Looking at all these makes me seriously amazed of the power of the human brain. Things that were literally thought to be impossible were made and than blown away by something far superior just a few years later.

Weaponry: There's nothing like an M1911 ACP. It just is and does everything. It was made to withstand the destruction of the universe. It is the only firearm that fits perfectly in my hands and just "feels" right firing. I love it so much I bought a full size, full weight, and full metal inside and out propane airgun.

M1911.JPG

The birth of the Muscle Car: 1 part regular Pontiac LeMans 2 parts awesome sauce. Looking at it gave you a bloody nose. Racing it left you looking at it's taillights.

1965_pontiac_gto-pic-5209202463888223890.jpeg

Building design: The Reunion Tower in Dallas, TX. Growing up seeing this thing all my life has been a pleasure. I literally get excited everytime I get to drive by it whether on the street level or on the major motorways near it. I still take pictures of it when I drive by. It just looks amazing in person, pictures do not do it justice.

txDal22.jpg

Aviation: What most people call the Huey, the Bell UH-1 (in this case UH-1D) to me is the best looking thing that flies. If I ever won the lotto jackpot I would 100% buy one and learn to fly it. Not to mention they are tough sum-biches and are still being used today (slightly evolved/modified).

Nothing ever gets little kids more giddy then the meanest vehicle to grace this earth. As little kid I thought that this was the coolest thing ever, I still do.
hummer-h1.jpg

I think this is one greatest looking cars of all time. RIP pop up headlights.
1230DSC02077.JPG

I loved Jets as a little kid.. I remember seeing airshows with the Blue Angels and such... But the F-16 was always king. Flying over the greatest city of all time nonetheless.

During a road trip to Texas back in the 90s we can into some break problems in the Mountains of Colorado. The hotel we stayed at had rentals for Wranglers for people to out of the mountain trails. Dad decided to rent one, going up in the mountains off road with the top down on a perfectly clear day was the probably one of the happiest moments up to that point. I was 6 or 7 at the time so you could probably guess why.

The Petronas Towers were always an icon of mine since I was a kid. (I'm not just copying terminator363 :D )

Same with the Akashi Kaikyo suspension bridge. Suspension bridges in general have always been icons of mine, but I always loved the Kaikyo.

Any cantilever bridge, not any specific one, has always been awesome to me.

With respect, a village/town cannot be described as a design icon, as it not created by one person or company.

It's true though, Crazed_Coupe... one doesn't go and design an entire town... They are developed over a period of time by many people who are just living life.

A music person or actor I would consider a design icon as they are designed by many people. Hair, makeup, clothes, what they say, what they do, etc everything is designed to sell more. Lady gaga for example obviously isn't like the way she acts on tv in real life, but they have made her into a character that the world will like to watch and buy her stuff. Which makes them the same as a nice car or plane that was designed for a special purpose. Also a city can be a design icon as it is the same thing. Vegas is full of flashy lights, casinos, and hookers to attract people to go there and waste all there money. Paris has fancy foods, good wines, and gorgeous landscapes again to attract tourist to go there and spend there money. Literally everything man made is only made to create more money. If Ferrari had a guaranteed income do you really think they would continue to make great cars? It all comes down to money in the end and what needs to be made to make more of it
